The Official Sonic the Hedgehog thread

They’re identical but being worked on by two separate, internal groups.

whoa whoa whoa
So there are THREE different versions of the game? PS2/Wii, 360, and PS3? Technically four if you count that the Wii version will have motion controls that the PS2 version won’t. Fuck that. Jesus Christ SEGA, you suck.

Also, I was serious. I know most people don’t care, but are Blaze and Vector in this one at all?

EDIT: I looked around on SEGA’s site and various video game news services and all I’m seeing is that the PS3 and 360 versions are the same.

no…just two version’s -_-

wii/ps2 one’s are they same…the level designs are different and have some different extras than the 360/ps3

the 360/ps3 version’s are the same…downloadable content will be available on these versions…

no blaze and vector so far…I havent been playing it recently…

This looks great, will there be a demo ? . I’m still hurting over Sonic the Hedgehog 360, I bought it at full price when it came out :shake:

You didn’t like Rush? eh…to each it’s own I suppose. Thanks for the info though I’m sure most of us appreciate it…

Nah…already seen those awhile back.

I’m pretty sure they’ll put up a demo of the game before it gets released…or at least near it’s release. And I wasn’t aware that the PS3 version got pushed back…In all honesty though I’m not surprised. Developers are still having a hard time developing for it but they’re getting better…somewhat. Can also look at it this way…PS3 ownders get a 2 weeks head up on the game…ya know? 5 more days until the game is put out…if a demo gets put up this weekend on the 360 you best believe I’m sparta kicking in my cuz’s door and hogging his system.

Now in other news…you guys wouldn’t happen to be interested in some Sonic metal would ya? Megadrive just updated their site with an album titled ‘Metalhog’. I haven’t listened to it quite yet…so I’ll listen to it while I’m workin on my project and give a verdict.

METALHOG!:

Three flaws that have never been addressed SINCE SONIC ADVENTURE 1 ON THE DREAMCAST. Let’s ensure we’ve got the right perspective here.

Venus has a sulfuric acid atmosphere. I’ve never been there. Therefore my information on Venus is wrong? Get out of here with that garbage.

Precedent: every single 3D Sonic title Sonic Team has made has had critical design flaws that have negatively impacted the title. Every. Single. One. Guess what? I don’t need to play jack and shit to make the educated guess that since Sonic Team’s first 10 3D Sonics are flawed (heavily), the eleventh will also be, especially since videos and impressions are citing camera and control issues.

Sonic Heroes doesn’t “auto fail” because of mirror levels. Sonic Heroes fails for a great many reasons, none of them being that level 2 looks similar to level 1. Shadow the Hedgehog played very similarly to the Adventure titles. The guns didn’t ruin it. Playing like the shitty Adventure titles ruined it.

And so fucking what if a problem isn’t noticeable right away? It’s still a fucking problem!

Your statement should say “rent the game before buying based on what you KNOW Sonic Team’s development habits are.” Not “well, if it looks good, buy it.”

Too many good games have come out and are coming out this holiday season: why would anyone in their right mind bother with Unleashed with Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, Little Big Planet, Chrono Trigger DS, Left 4 Dead, and a host of AAA titles either available or imminent? There’s other shit to play people, most developed by people who actually put real effort behind their titles (and I dare you to tell me that Sonic Team puts nearly as much effort into Sonic as Epic into Gears, or Bethesda into Fallout). Don’t just buy this trashy-looking game on an impulse with the faint hope that maybe Sonic Team lucked out.

OUCH! Can you at least give us some milk to wash that down with? Jesus Christ!

I don’t think anybody is really going to try to make that comparison between epic and sonic team at the moment…Sonic Unleashed is a ‘side’ game…the one that (if in fact it turns out to be 7.5 range or you’re a fan) after you’re done with the other big name titles then you may come to this. I already beat Gears…twice…second day it came out on normal and hardcore. The highest system I currently own is a Wii and since I’m not planning on picking up Animal Crossing (don’t have time for something like that…my soul is being sucked away as is) This is my next purchase along with Castlevania Judgement. Situational stuff ya know?

sonofabitch!!!
so, the cdx auction ended today. I go to bed its $31, I wake up and its over $50. no biggie I thought, a few minutes toward the end of the auction the price rises to $68. Im on a tight budget but I really want one of these so I was willing to plunk (yeah, plunk. bringing it back!) down $70 for it, its counting down…24 seconds left. I put in $70…I reload just to be sure. this was my killing attack!

SOME ASSHOLE BID $124 ON IT!!
fucking sniped me at the last second!

FUCK!

I really want one of these.

^ Sniping’s a part of e-auction life, I’m afraid. Too bad really: I don’t own a CDX but I’ve seen one. Very stylish little system.

@ Sonichuman: half of my posts are just me being an asshole for no reason. Don’t put too much stock in them. But expect them to increase in number as the release date approaches.

I’ll say this, though: I’ll definitely DL and try a demo with as much of an open mind as I can possibly muster.

eh I already know that lol. You do have some good points regardless and I take them into consideration.

and apparently I didn’t notice before but the releases go like this Wii/Ps2, 360, ps3 on a weekly basis.

So I’ll be playing the wii version this coming week…

IGN Wii Sonic Unleashed Hands-on:

and it comes with a full stage play through

Wii Gameplay Apotos:
http://wii.ign.com/dor/objects/14242720/sonic-unleashed/videos/SonicU_apotos_wii_111408.html

It looks really good considering that it’s a wii game IMO and apparently the guy who did the hands on says it could probably be the better version out of them all gameplay wise…Must be Dimps’ hand being in it…if that’s the case.

From the video though it looks like the game is overall a bit slower…probably because it’s at 30fps unlike the other counterparts but hey if it’s better gameplay wise then I’ll take that trade. Not to mention Sega isn’t restricting people to using Wii mote and nunchuk…you can use classic and gamecube controller if you don’t want to use it the default way.

Here’s another developer diary as well

Sonic Unleashed - The World Of Sonic:
http://blogs.ign.com/SEGA_SonicUnleashed/2008/11/14/105898/

they really didn’t have to do all that considering sonic’s going to be wizzing past that shit most of the time…but I’ll be sure to stop and admire the work they’ve done anyway cause I tend to do that in my games. It’s a field I wanna get into so…

Edit:

Gametrailers has some vids up too!

360 Empire City Trailer:

…Did I just see Werehog do a bicycle kick!? lmao DAMN YOU SEGA AND YOUR HYPE TRAILERS! man…if this game is actually decent i’m gonna have to end up buying the Wii and 360 versions…-_-

Wii Holoska trailer:

still looks good

About that Metalhog cd I posted earlier…

surprisingly…electronic guitar and sonic tunes…you’d think I love it. Fact really couldn’t be farther from the truth however after listening to it through it completely once. and then halfway a second time. 75% of some of the decisions that Megadriver made in those tracks I didn’t agree with… :(.

Especially in comparison to their green hill track on this cd in comparison to the one that they had done earlier…

Hedgehog Metal (Green Hill Zone):

comparing that one to the one on the cd…I completely prefer the earlier. Some notes that they missed or just…didn’t seem to fit completely rubbed me the wrong way (They should probably not ever try to do ‘Live and Learn’ again). That’s just my opinion of it so don’t know if anyone feels the same.

Shadow Ace does the game have any type of online leaderboards/score/time attack? Has anyone else heard of these modes being in the game? I have GoW2, Left 4 Dead and have a 3 way tie of interest between Mirror’s Edge, Tomb Raider Underworld and Sonic for my 3rd game purchase of Nov. The game having leaderboards is a huge plus towards making my decisions on this game.

well Ive decided to give up on trying to acquire a cdx. its just too expensive and people are fucking vicious trying to get one. so Ive decided to get a sega saturn and a genesis which is actually cheaper than buying a cdx. saturn plays sega cd games anyways and my old genesis is in ugly shape and I want a shiny almost new one.

anybody buy those nes/snes or the nes/genesis clone consoles?

Im hella tempted to get the nes/snes one. the nes/genesis one looks nice but I read that the sound/arent totally accurate and you cant use real genesis controllers with it, only the ones it is packaged with which killed it for me.

Ugh wtf…:shake: http://www.gameinformer.com/NR/exeres/B2697618-AAD1-425F-91B5-3B3B5C9819F4.htm

lol I find it funny that they gave chronicles a pretty high rating in comparison to everyone else and then they do that…

IGN Wii Unleashed review:

like I said…it’s pretty close to 7.5 I knew they were gonna knock the hell out of werehog lol…

Edit: you know that complaint about people seeing the sonic series as nothing but speed now without the platforming elements?

lol at this comment though

I also find it funny that most reviewers hate the guitar rock from the sonic games…and it reflects in their reviews as well. Should that really count though since so many fans of the series actually enjoy it?

I actually like the Guitar music. Even the Hub worlds are okay because I really liked the first sonic Adventure.

What I don’t like is all of the accessory stuff.

Everytime it seems like Sega is back on the right track, and then they introduce slow ass shit like Silver’s levels, or stuff that doesn’t even mesh wells like Shadow’s levels

Give me Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, 7 chaos Emeralds, speed, and time trials.

I’ll be set for a long ass time.

It’s about Speed and Platforming. Speed and jumping around won’t get redundant if you’ve been playing the game since you were 2 years old like I have

That said I can’t wait to play the game. 1 barely above average review? Bleh who cares

actually this review is actually pretty good from my eyes It’s about as good as Secret Rings which I enjoyed and could probably be better since I’m sure Werehog levels won’t bug me because they aren’t ‘Sonic-like’ It’s called ‘Werehog’ for a reason…though it ain’t fast like the normal sonic levels it’s not supposed to be. I could make the same argument that the segments in Gears 2 where you’re not on the ground controlling a person aren’t ‘gears-like’ if I wanted too but they’re both there as part of the story. Oh snap Kratos is solving puzzles in God of War! He’s not supposed to be doing that, he’s supposed to be yelling at the top of his lungs 24/7 and ripping people’s bodies apart at all times! How dare you put something not God of War like in my God of War!

When it comes to the werehog sections I’m only gonna go with my own experience…if I think it’s bad I’ll post up saying it’s bad or what could have been done to make it better. I wanna see what other reviewers are saying as well.

oh and like i said…fans of the series enjoy the music…just seems like most of the reviewers are trying to find a way to nitpick…9.4 Sonic Adventure 2 and now all of a sudden you guys are really hatin on the music? uhhh huh…

Edit:
Discussing stuff with Rioting Soul it seems I need better analogy to compare werehog sections too…lol…Analogy was ‘ok’ but it has big flaws and didn’t quite get my point across…

I see where you are coming from, but in all fairness especially with God of War, what’s a side puzzle here and there to the Gameplay? It would be no challenge if it was just all action packed throughout the game. It’s a newer game with a lot more room to establish an identity. Sonic on the other hand has it tougher, because people remember the older games, and want what those games brought except more up to date. Kind of like how Mario evolved, but at the same time it didn’t really feel like they were forcing it on you at all, and that it was just a natural evolution that was going to happen.

Compare that to Sonic Games of recent, where you actually don’t get to play all the way through as Sonic, maybe with an occasional detour and then back on to regular Gameplay, but you’ll probably put hours into the Sonic detours(Silver the Hedgehog, Shadow the Hedgehog, Werehog, etc…).

Hey it might just be me, but I am slightly annoyed by the fact that they aren’t even minor detours like an occasional puzzle in God of War, but major one’s that are a lot more force fed. It’s a little irritating to have the adrenaline pumping through you of just running through the level at full speed, and then having to take a DEEP sigh because you know that, that excitement you got from running through the level, will be short lived, and that you have to go through one of those major detours again to get back that excitement, in a rinse and repeat cycle.

yeah…I understand. Through the talking I did with R Soul we both agree that without the werehog levels the game would probably get like an 8.0…and since werehog isn’t there to complain about they’d inevitably talk about how everything was the same throughout the game and complain about it losing it’s luster after the 5th stage. They’d probably also complain about the game being crazy short especially with sonic blasting through 10 miles worth of modeling 3d work in a mere 5 minutes. I think Werehog was Sonic Team’s attempt to try to grab that extra 2 points for variety but of course it backfired.

As for the minor detour thing…Sonic Team actually attempted to try that if you played 2006 through the ‘amigo’ system. Of course this was also with them assuming that the main 3 hedgehogs gameplay was completely solid…in which case it wasn’t.

Giant rant and poorly formed paragraphs incoming.

I’m all for minor detours in the main game but they have to be at more than an alpha state (i.e., not most of what Sonic Team releases). You know what is surprisingly fun? 2P competitive gem hunting in Sonic Adventure 2. If there’s a way to get that level of fun into 1P gem hunting, you’d have something there.

Not every deviation of Sonic has been horrible. It’s kinda fun to play as Gamma and speed through levels locking on to shit quickly, for instance.

The big issue stems from camera, controls, and an obvious lack of real playtesting and polishing before release. That and shitty storytelling, but if the game is otherwise fine, that last little tidbit could be forgiven.

But Sonic Team is not synonymous with any of that, the sort of care and attention many other devs give. I may not like Square Enix that much, but at least they put real care into assuring that final products aren’t buggy messes (not always successfully, but they try). That’s why it’s such a fucking tragedy that Sonic Team took over Phantasy Star. Imagine if Sega bought or merged with Bungie or something, and Sonic Team took over Halo. Love or hate Halo, you can’t deny, with evidence from Bungie’s playtesting methods, interviews, and the final product itself, that Bungie puts a lot of heart into their titles.

A more RL example; when Naughty Dog stopped making Crash games.
