The Official Sonic the Hedgehog thread

If it’s only Werehog it’ll be tolerable. But I’d still rather it just be earn new moves at set points in the game, or buy them from a “shop” a la DMC. XP grinding sucks ass.

But don’t put it past Sonic Team to put that shit in the daytime levels too. Don’t forget that Secret Rings had a level-up system and that ring equip bullshit.

I was about to debunk your XP grinding then you kicked threw out a psychic dp with Secret Rings…forgot about that. Even still though the only reason IMO that the Secret Rings way of leveling up was bad was because a lot of the stuff was for shit that Sonic probably should have had starting out (I.E. better cornering…come on now…lol) This doesn’t look that way as in the first stage it looks like Sonic has most if not all of his skills at the ready with the Tight turn skidding, the sliding under the low areas and stuff. And you make him go faster by collecting more rings so that isn’t going to be in any type of level up system that could be for normal sonic anyway. If it’s for an ability say…increasing the area around sonic that will collect rings then that’s fine ya know?

I also don’t think (read: HOPE) that they don’t put in any type of shop system for these abilities for werehog…If they are going to put it in the game then they’d better make it easy to find. I also forgot to notice something that I just now thought about that’s a huge plus with this game…The load times. If I see another sonic game with a loading screen 2 minutes long after talking to someone…:annoy::mad:. Thankfully it looks like they straightened that issue.

ANYWAY…here’s a new blog IGN blog update that focuses on Werehog

http://blogs.ign.com/SEGA_SonicUnleashed/2008/11/

I haven’t read it yet…but I’m gonna get to it.

XP grinding is boring and repetitive. I hate it because it forces you to spend a lot of time doing the same damn thing over and over again if you want 100% completion, and rewards time investment over improving skill. I hate how it is infecting every game these days, probably because so many people care about how many “hours” are in a game over how fun it is, and don’t care where those “hours” come from.

agreed…but I didn’t find the system that they had in Secret Rings to be ‘XP grinding’ cause you could just run through the game with what you had and get to the ending. You didn’t have to get every every ability if you didn’t want to to get the true ending of the game. It’s not like in some RPG’s where sometimes you HAVE to XP grind…the game isn’t forcing you to do things over and over again. You can beat that stage and get the xp for it and the move on to another stage and get xp there. In that way you’re still progressing while moving along instead of just staying in one area and fighting the same enemies in the same place all over again so you don’t die against a boss later on…ya know?

Edit:

Rioting Soul caught something that I missed in the intro video…when the guy was scrolling through the options and setting the voices to Japanese. There was a camera option…What that entails…I do not know but maybe you can have the camera set up as close or further away from sonic as you want.

Edit2:

almost forgot Remy…I remember you saying something about you hating the fact that they barely have any of the other characters available for play but apparently what I’m getting from the above article is exactly what I stated earlier. They’re trying to focus on one thing at a time as of right now currently…first thing being Sonic. But the way how they worded it when they talked about it in the article sounds like they were either thinking about doing something that involves more of the side characters in some fashion later on depending upon how this game does.

Of course this could just be me trying to read between the lines and there isn’t anything really there to interpret…but that’s what I got when I read that section of the article.

Yes, it is better than some games since you could just run through and beat it. But nonetheless I am a completionist and like to have 100%, so I still ground out all that XP to hit 99. And it sucked.

soooo…no offense…that sorta sounds like a ‘you’ problem…then a ‘game’ problem…

It can be both. If the game doesn’t offer a reward that is equal to the effort you put in to level up then why even have the level in the first place.

All the footage for Unleashed looks good thus far, the only thing that has me concerned is controlling the behind sonic segments but everything else looks smooth. My only request is some crazy ass light speed dash segments, those were always fun.

To an extent. Except that, why put it in the game in the first place? They obviously expect at least some people to do it. But can anybody honestly tell me that they enjoy grinding?

Light Speed dash is in. It’s been shown in a few of the vids so far…but if by ‘crazy ass light speed dash segments’ you’re refering too the stuff they did in SA2…especially in that one area in Crazy gadget where you were heading for empty space but there just happened to be a line of rings right there if you spotted it soon enough…then no haven’t seen any of stuff like that yet.

oh shit! stop with the assists!!! lol The way how I’m seeing it if I’m going to compare it to something like a Final Fantasy game. Alot of times they have out of the way ultimate weapons or extremely powerful summons that you can nab for about 2-3 more hours of your life…minimum. They give you a choice on that stuff though because it’s not required to finish the game…it’s just an added perk. How one person perception of time vs. reward can be diff from gamer to gamer and even from game to game. I don’t think there was anything in Secret Rings though that you could nab that was at the level of a FF ultimate summon…I could be wrong though because I haven’t collected all of the abilities sonic could get in Secret Rings (file got deleted…several times on someone elses wii, then i was finally able to get my own and I haven’t gotten as far yet). The ‘level grinding’ in Secret rings is relatively easy though so I wouldn’t be expecting anything really good in the end…but it’s there I guess to give the game more longevity for people who wan to do something after they beat it. Sonic’s not the only game guilty of this and definitely hasn’t been the first.

Yeah thats exactly the kind of stuff I want to see in…I think its my Rhythm Game side kicking in but it was just so rewarding to get the timing for that stuff down. Actually one of my fondest memories of SA2 was Metal Harbor simply for the amount of light speed dashing that level had.

I wouldn’t mind seeing some of that stuff in as well…but i’m pretty content with what’s been done so far…perhaps they’ll be doing more of that in the later levels. I think most people are going to be too busy in the beginning trying to dodge walls and obstacles at first and getting used to how fast sonic is going at first…but once the reaction time sets in all bets are off…just like how Secret Rings was once once you got all that stuff

The PS2 sales of this game will be what determines if this game is a success or not, cuz it’s definitely not going to happen on:

360: Gears, Fallout, Far Cry, Fable. Guitar Hero, CoD5
PS3: Little Big Planet, Guitar Hero, CoD5, Resistance 2
Wii: Animal Crossing, Brawl, Guitar Hero

And lets not forget the behemoth called Wrath of the Lich King. Sonic just isn’t a must-buy anymore, especially after that beastial abomination called Sonic 2006. Pushing the date back to Jan 09 would have been a much better business manuever.

I like how the majority of stuff you posted on 360 and ps3 is M…which basically means those games are missing out on a lot of sales from consumers who basically can’t play the game. Granted I agree it ain’t a must-buy with all the other stuff coming out but saying that it’s going to be completely dependent upon ps2 sales is a bit of an understatement IMO if you’re considering everything. If the game is at least in the 8.5 and above range from most reviewers then it should be relatively fine…especially since it’s coming out at least a good 30 days before Christmas. Plenty of time for word to pass along if the game is good or not. And you also have to take into account that more households own a Wii than a 360 or a ps3 currently. It’s a wild card right now.

Edit: Also have to consider on the other side that if parents are even actually paying attention to ratings…or give a shit for that matter lol. so again…Wild Card

Do parents even care anymore? Just a week ago I saw five kids no older than seven watching Saw 5.

Honestly, no one gives a rats ass about the ESRB ratings. Parents gave up on any form of content control when the internet/porno-oasis became available for the masses. You think the M rating stopped kiddies from playing Halo? Chain-sawing heads off in Gears?

I’ll say this, it stands a fighting chance on the Wii. They need to get a demo out quick. Don’t fuck this up Sega

It’s actually a mixed bag when it comes to parents…cause you got the overly cautious religious parents who even denied their kids from playing Shadow the Hedgehog…then you got the parents who REALLY don’t give a shit…

kid brings up GTAIV to the counter
Me:…O.o…yo uh…where your parents at?
Mom: saunters over to the counter what’s the problem?
Me: It’s GTA…and it’s rated M…are you sure you want him to have this? flips it over and reads the content descriptors profanity, violence, nudity…etc
Mom: Oh he’ll be ok =D!
Me:…lifts eyebrow at mom and then looks at 10 year old kid…then shrugs ok then!

Some parents actually do care though…It’s just that a lot of them aren’t even aware of the content sometimes. We’ve had parents bring games back and complain cause they weren’t aware that they were going to be killin hos and what not all day. You’d be surprised when you bring it to their attention…on BOTH sides of the coin.

The first 20 minutes of the game…

thoughts?

That intro video was KICK ASS… until the whole gaia monster/werewolf bit. Then I was like “uh-oh Solaris again.”

The gameplay looks no different than past 3D Sonic games. This isn’t good. This isn’t good at all.

my thoughts?
that they should turn the fucking volume down on Rock Band or whatever they are doing.

What was wrong with Solaris? The only thing I hated about Solaris was the design of Solaris Phase 2. No face/head= :wtf:

Am I the only one that gets a kick out of the supernatural bosses? :wonder:

I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that.
