Dude looked like he was having trouble controlling Sonic during the behind-the-back sections, and the side-scrolling elements seem rush-ish but with camera angles designed to make the game look good. Which was a big problem in other 3D Sonic titles. So far it looks like too-fast Crash 2/3 levels mixed with Sonic Rush style levels.
There is nothing to get hype about. Not yet.
My biggest complaint is still that only Sonic is playable. Even if the other characters were just post-game unlockables that played through Sonic’s stages (which is what I would prefer anyway TBH), I’d just like the option of playing as them.
I’m increasingly sick and tired of Sonic Team undervaluing the rest of the cast list.
Also, I’m still confused about why you all hate the idea of on-rails stages for Sonic the Hedgehog? I think it matches his speed perfectly. The problem with SatSR was that they did stupid side objectives like “don’t touch rings/pearls” and that you had to spend 2 seconds charging your jump first. Instant jump and no retarded side-objectives would make on-rails good to go.
If I thought it looked good, I would’ve said it looked good. It doesn’t, not yet. All it looks like is another 3D Sonic with some Sonic Rush/Crash Bandicoot elements, but those elements are shackled to a camera that appears positioned for maximum spectator wow factor and little intuitiveness (which is, again, a common issue in the 3D Sonic games).
I don’t mind on-rails for Sonic as long as I’m the one moving him. Actually, I’ve felt that a Crash Bandicoot-style approach is ideal for Sonic for a long time. My grief with this “World Adventure” video is that the behind the back segments give you little in the way of time to react, and it sure didn’t look like you could slow Sonic down (more Sonic '06 forced running shenanigans = bad).
Yeah, I can get behind that. You are right that the camera often tries to make it look pretty rather than show you what you need to see in order to play well.
now more than ever Im really looking forward to the werehog levels. I want to actually control the pace of the level AND know what Im doing.
the sonic level shown looks really shitty. fuck that camera, its right behind sonic. even in an open area to walk around in it was still too close for comfort. his walking speed is pretty fast as well. and at times it was too damn far away.
Im going to say it again, SA1 nailed the “sonic in 3d” perfectly. in terms of control/speed/platforming. with some more polishing it could be perfect. almost anyway.
Even as a kid, I always thought that line was stupid.
I don’t think the segments in this game are the ‘forced running sections’ from 06…i’m pretty sure you can stop if you reeeeally felt like it and probably possibly control his speed a little bit if you don’t think you can handle sonic going at a full run just yet. The only thing I can go on when i’m saying that during the course of that video the guy stopped in a few areas and actually turned around…especially in that one area that he screwed up in and had to find his way back onto the ‘path’. Honestly though I think the vids that are seen currently mostly look hard to control because Sonic by his nature is generally hard to control at first…then you get used to things. People who aren’t used to how fast the hedgehog can go WILL fuck up.
Sorry Remy but unfortunately you’re with the minority crowd currently. I like the other characters as well but currently Sonic Team doesn’t know what the fuck to do with them. You’ll get your chance definitely to play some other characters in Black Knight as optional at least…Wasn’t there something said that the other characters would show up as optional in this game in some form as well or something? Can’t remember. Well all I know is that currently I’d rather Sega focus on getting sonic right first…then start to branch out to the other characters. Otherwise you’re gonna end up ‘Finding the computer room’ or fishing…again…
^ I don’t buy for a moment that it’s impossible to make something fast without it being difficult to control. I just don’t think Sonic Team is the right company to try, considering they’ve botched up… how many times, now?
I didn’t say impossible or difficult…my example would be this one time when this chick was into Sonic but she never played any of the rush games. So I sat down beside her and let her play it on my ds while I watched. Of course she was running into just about every damn thing, but that was her first time playing…I’m sure if you sat someone down and got them to play Sonic 2 and they NEVER played a sonic game before…They’d be running into shit too. You get what I’m sayin?
Well see… that is the problem. STOP trying to come up with different shit for the other characters to do. Take the 3&K approach. They play the exact same levels, but with a few different abilities. Or hell, they have the exact same abilities. Just let me play as them, in main levels, with no stupidity. Don’t make them mandatory for story though, as then some people will gripe. Just give people the option of fucking around like that after beating the main game. This isn’t rocket science, it’s polygon model swapping.
lolz…so knuckles in S&K was optional?
the problem and gripe is that people hate re-doing the same levels over and over again with different characters which is sonic’s formula…now SA2 was a great example of non-same level but…i give up…
sonic adventure was the perfect balance…3 emblem missions per level but reap no rewards
palette swap replays?..lolz
Yes. What happens at the beginning? You pick Sonic, Sonic & Tails, Tails, or Knuckles, and then you play through the story. And then you are done. And only if you choose to do so do you play as the other characters later. There is no super-duper top secret boss for beating it as everybody. There’s just play who you want to, don’t play who you don’t want to.
Do that again.
Sonic Heroes…
sonic adeventure dx sonic and metal sonic
anywho what your asking is more characters playable…but you dont mind if it replay’s the same levels and gimmicks as long as your controlling a different character…
Yes. But also that it isn’t mandatory (no story, no unlockables) so that people who don’t want to play the others don’t have to do so. I want to have the option of playing the other cast members though because I like a lot of them, many better than Sonic, and I don’t like seeing them relegated to just story mode or mini-games, or left out entirely. But I also realize that many other fans don’t give two shits about anyone who isn’t Sonic or Shadow (or maybe Knuckles), which is why I am okay with it being a Free Play type thing with no associated unlockables of any kind.
…if you’re going to do it that way then at least have the character’s going a separate route…like 3k. That way they can use their own abilities to get around the stage at their leisure…possibly to get to different goals that are within the stage. And I’d rather have each character keep their uniqueness instead of being a swap…I could see Sonic Team royally messing that up though.
If they were to REEALLY bring knux back into the light…I’d picture a good style of play for him would be a brawling stage. Put that supposed ‘martial arts’ knowledge to good use where he’d have lots of different moves…sort of like DMC light…maaaybe possibly doing a small bit a treasure hunting as optional in a few of the stages if the player truly wished to explore…and it better not be the master emerald again.
Knux:…pokes at the master emerald…VERY…gently
Master Emerald:… shatters and scatters itself across the continent
Knux:…GODDAMMIT!
For an emerald that holds power over the chaos emeralds…it sure does break easily…Gonna need to get some industrial strength strength glue and stop using that Elmer’s stuff.
Yes, as I originally said, I would also prefer that they have unique powers. And that occasionally those unique powers give them access to alternate routes. But if that is too much work, I’d even be happy with it just being a palette swap… that’s better than nothing.

Nothing new between this trailer and ‘Sonic in the day and night’ trailer…cept I think it’s in a bit higher quality.
Hey guys if you actually go to the sonic unleashed site they have a few more clips of stuff there
http://www.sega.com/sonicunleashed/us/
click on the Shamar location on the globe and you can see footage of the game in both day and night sections…There’s at least 3 werehog videos that i don’t remember seeing and at least one with regular sonic. Those vids in particular are the Shamar one for daytime in that section and Apotos, Spagonia, and Shamar for night time. Digging the tune that they’re playing on here for Night time…sounds sort of like a track from Sonic Adventure but I can’t put my finger on exactly which one it is.
Also click on Apotos on the spinning globe and you can get even more vids of the game in action…both day and night. Werehog honestly doesn’t look that bad to me at all…has nice platforming elements with a mix of action in them.

Sometimes I forget all the bullshit that the people doing the levels for sonic games have to go through considering that the character is just blowing through several miles of scenery…That’s a lot of stuff to put in between that long distance. Interesting read.
