yeah 2 had lots of alternate routes but it’s hard NOT to run into a lamp post checkpoint at least once in every act.
New sonic unleashed vid!:
http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/14242719/sonic-unleashed/videos/su_091108.html
first thing you notice right off the bat is the ‘E10’ rating and the Animated blood…wait…animated blood? sonic game? O.o?
Jesus Christ @ Sonic trying to turn that corner and them cutting it right before he went into that boulder
they also have werehog footage…lol…it honestly doesn’t look bad to me…grabbing 2 enemies and then smacking them together as weapons?
Edit: if that’s the music for that stage…I dig it and whoever’s idea for werehog has been watching too much One Piece.
Edit2:…Did he do a shoryuken?
Damn that sick vid was the best one yet!
It shows continuous real time play and it killed my fear of this game being “too onrails easymode autopilot fun to watch but little input required and therefore boring to play”, I saw some nice platforming to go with the “easy speed” element all of which looks gorgeous. I’m going to go out on a limb and say the werehog section looks kinda fun he has a lot of attacks and isn’t as slow as I initially thought he’d be.
LOL @ werehog doing ninja gaiden style flying swallow slash at the end:rofl:
I actually think the were-hog stuff looks more solid than the regular speed levels.
any word on who will be doing the voice for sonic? assuming he even talks. probably though.
Hey specs…you might have to make sure not to starve yourself before this game comes out…cause you might be eating a lot of crow.
Since Sonic’s a light parody of Dragon Ball/Goku I’m not that opposed to Sonic having a beast transformation. It looks pretty good in gameplay too… although the game seems a little too Rush-inspired. Sonic shouldn’t just be about running as fast as you can and hoping you don’t die along the way (but I’m sure that argument’s been used in this thread before so I won’t bring it up again).
Your avatar is fucked up lol…
^You’re the guy who liked sonic06 right?
Weresonic looks crazy . Love his animations
Okay… I have to admit it… even the werehog looks damned fun there. But I still just can’t help but wonder why the felt the need to do that when an existing character like Knuckles for example could do it instead?
Anyway, looks fun. Will buy.
No. That would be me. :wgrin:
And the cycle will forever be repeated. New Sonic title previewed, people are wary, some cool looking videos surface, people commit to buying it, and then… inevitable disappointment.
That’s what people told me before Sonic '06.
Before ANYBODY gets their hopes up, remember how awesome videos of the following Sonic games looked before their release: Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, both remakes, Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog '06, Sonic and the Secret Rings. Especially Sonic '06. Remember those super fast platforming segments in the videos? The ones that, in the final game, were just Sonic automatically running on rails?
Again: DON’T BUY UNLEASHED RIGHT AWAY. Just wait and see. Read impressions (by people other than Sonic fanboys, aka NOT Play Magazine) and read reviews. Don’t get conned. Again. If impressions and reviews are favorable (and if a demo is available that plays well), THEN go ahead.
Agreed. Not that Rush is terrible; it’s MOUNTAINS better than most anything Sonic Team has made, but really, Sonic shouldn’t devolve into Uniracers.
- Adventure 1 & 2: The actually running stages are great. Glitchy yes, but tons of fun. The downside were the shitty hunting, fishing, and mech stages. 7/10
- Heroes was awesome. Don’t lie. 9/10
- Shadow was terrible for sure, but it looked bad right from the start. Guns and vehicles? Fail. 3/10
- Okay yeah, '06 looked great and proved to be the worst of the series ever. You got that one right for sure. 0/10
- Secret Rings was certainly in some ways a step in the right direction, and appears to be the basis of the from-behind sections of Unleashed. The biggest problems (gameplay wise; ignoring the story) were repetition of stages/stage segments and that you had to charge the jump first. Seriously charge the jump… WTF?! But nonetheless a fun and interesting direction to go. 6/10
That’s right…almost forgot that there should be a chance to at least demo the game before it comes out. That is if Sega isn’t trying to bull shit us again lol. Aight I’ll hold the inner fanboy back at least until the demo comes out.
Yes, they were fun, and yes, I myself had fun with them, but neither were good titles. The first you can forgive; it’s Sonic Team’s first try. Fine. But how did the control, camera, and gameplay issues (hunting/fishing stages, holding UP for half of the speed stages, falling through floors, etc.) not get fixed for Adventure 2? And the Adventure 2 remake was actually WORSE in many ways. The GC Adventure DX was probably the most stable and well-made of all the 3D Sonics and it still played sub-par.
Heroes was NOT awesome. Like its predecessors, it controlled like garbage (and, yes, I got used to it and beat the game, but it still controlled like garbage), its camera was prone to choosing terrible angles, many of the stages were overly long, and not only were there objective hunts (the Chaotix stages), but they had no Knuckles radar to help. Yeah, memorization = good design. Except it doesn’t.
Not to mention some horrible boss fights. The real highlight of that game was the Last story, where Mecha Sonic FINALLY fights you (he should have fought you at the end of every zone that instead had armies of boring enemies in place of bosses). Metal Madness, Metal Overlord, the music and the dialog was all great (though still super glitchy).
Neither the guns nor the vehicles killed that game. Actually, one of the good things about it was the ease of just picking up a weapon and using it while moving quickly. The real issue is that, like every other 3D Sonic before it, it was haphazardly put together and lacking enough polish and playtesting to render it good.
Also, the stories in Sonic games have never been that good, but now I’m supposed to believe Shadow was created by aliens and that Sonic the fucking Hedgehog can be stopped by LOL GAS!? (That trend continued when Sonic was trumped by that Mephiles loser. Come the fuck on.)
I’d rather play Superman 64, and I’m not even joking.
Was there any real reason, at all, that this game had to be on rails? Seriously? Other than that, yeah, I guess it wasn’t horrible. I didn’t like it but it wasn’t uber-bad (big surprise: it wasn’t done by Sonic Team). But was it really that good? Really?
Yeah, you are kinda right, I actually had already dropped it to 6 before you posted your return comment.
The guns could’ve been okay except for:
- it felt like a shameless attempt to cash in on GTA-mindedness
- it seemed out-of-character for even Shadow, compared to his personality in previous games
- they controlled like utter ass, particularly the glitchy auto-aim
And vehicles were straight up dumb. Shadow is equal in speed to, if not faster than, Sonic. What the hell would he need a vehicle for? He can run at super-sonic speeds, those air skates even allow him to move close to frictionlessly, and he can even warp time and space. They felt even more forced and GTA-cash-in than the guns did. Plus they also controlled like shit.
Not to mention the general stage design of Shadow was the worst of the lot up to that point in the series.
But at any rate… Shadow looked terrible even from early reveals and videos. Nobody was hyped for that garbage.
Yes, I will grant you that all of the 3D games have been glitchy. But that didn’t stop some of them from still being fun. Concerning Heroes, personally I loved how long those levels were. I would like to see more platforming games with levels that long. The stage design in itself also included a lot of unique and clever things that stayed true to the basic concepts of Sonic. The team formations was a fresh and neat idea, that also allowed them to work in a large portion of the way-too-huge series cast without making the total game too long. Yes I’ll give you the hunt-and-find stuff is BS, but at least Heroes had less of it than Adventure 1 & 2. It was a step in the right direction as far as that goes. The only other downsides were the Team vs Team bossfights sucked, and yeah it was still glitchy. Nonetheless, I still had a whole lot of fun playing Teams Sonic and Dark (and Chaotix when they weren’t hunting for crap).
Honestly, a look back at the 3D titles really just proves that if they would fix all the damned bugs and glitches, do more playtesting before release, the series wouldn’t be in the shitter that it is in now. They’ve had a lot of clever ideas and what would have been easy-winning formulas if they just fixed the bugs.
^ Sonic Shuffle sucked BUT it had such a great party game idea, the cards. I bought four DC controllers and VMUs just so everybody could have their own private card display.
In GOOD Sonic game news, Chronicles went GOLD! … Yesterday.

Yes, SOME of the titles were fun or had fun moments, but compared to other 3D transitions of prominent 2D titles (Mario, Zelda, and Metroid amongst others), Sonic titles are trash. There have been 8 major 3D Sonic Titles, and none have fixed problems that existed in SONIC ADVENTURE 1. Sorry, but when I see Mario Galaxy playing gloriously, Metroid Prime 1 (the sequels not so much) taking a 2D formula and successfully giving it a 3D treatment, Zelda titles with mechanics that are simple to control and fun to use, or even just other games in general that receive a very high level of thoughtfulness from their developers, Sonic just doesn’t compare. Sonic Team is a horrible developer.
NINJA EDIT - The official Chronicles site has a fuckton more info:

Didn’t the GC Sonic Adventure DX have slowdown that was not present in the DC version? Talk about “stability.”
It seems to me that Sonic 06 might have been passable if only Sonic Team had actually playtested the game or make some damn patches. 80% of the flaws I hear about involve glitchiness and unbelievably long loading times. Mind you, I only played the demo and watched footage (gameplay footage, not trailers) of it, so I wouldn’t know for sure.
Sonic '06 has major problems beyond the typical 3D Sonic glitches. The removal of a lot of the move-canceling from previous titles makes the game in general a chore to navigate. It’s slower than molasses too. Plus really shitty sub-quests and missions, Silver in particular is just retarded all-around, and yeah the horrible load times like you said.
sigh
Im still hopelessly infatuated with SA1. its such a fun game, it definitely has that Sonic style to it. it had plenty of variety and despite its flaws is still really enjoyable.
Scum <3 SA1, BFF!

a post I made on Tegaki. enjoy.
