Not everyone that played this game cares for the tekken characters. Instead of wasting energy trying to play jehova’s witness with the issue just let it go. Its useless waste of time. I knew the patch was gonna cause some backlash. The SFxT community has to accept that only the diehard players remain out of loyalty to the game. And people hate or dont play this game for a variety of reasons. This guy’s discomfort with the new metagame us a legit complaint. If he aint having fun whats the point of playing a game like this? There’s no money to collect or fame. He is not even gonna force himself to like it.
I agree with you. However there is a difference between “Hey I tried my best to get this team to work well. I posted replays and asked people what I should do to improve, but they told me to play Tekken characters” (This never happened)
and
“Hey, Tekken characters are too strong and the SF cast is useless now. I hate this game.” (His point of view)
I’m not trying to talk him into playing again, because that’s obviously up to him. But he shouldn’t walk around and say things like
I’ve been playing MK9 offline lately, and I bet that if there will be a crossover game between SF and MK it will probably have SFxT mechanics. The MK characters also have dial-a-combo strings like the Tekken characters. The only thing that has to be coped will be the brokenness of some of the MK characters’ teleports. I believe Scorpion, Smoke, Noob, and Sektor among others will be broken in the crossover unless there will be a block button.
The crazy thing is i still see more sf x sf teams still even with them being so omg nerfed to hell. Vanilla ppl didn’t even really dare focus on any tekken character other than jack x, kaz, jin, raven, julia and hwo to some extent. Vanilla was a ryu, rolento, cody, chun, rufus, safe abc, stack defense gems, lllmhh fest. I personally am glad that shit was traded in for some slight variety in character choice.
some people in 2012: ahhhh man, no one is using the tekken characters…they look good but need a viable anti-air, that should fix them
2013: OMG! WHY ARE THE TEKKEN CHARACTERS SOO GOOD?! ANTI AIRS ARE OP IN THIS GAME NOW AND EVERYONE’S USING PURE TEKKEN TEAMS!
And by the way, Ryu x Ken is one of the better teams in this game…yeah they may not have any tekkenish strings or crazy mixups like them but footsie wise, they can get onto them with no problem
I grew to hate this game for pretty much the same reason.
TBH if they just gave them viable AA that would’ve been great. But they gave the tekken cast AAs that combos into huge damage and have parts of their body that are air invincible. Some even have reach around AAs like Law and to a lesser extent Christie. Meanwhile the SF cast has traditional AAs (outside of Ibuki and Cody) with good a hitbox-hurtbox ratio and that’s it. They gave the Tekken cast buffs and the SF side just got damage nerfs and meter buffs, and to be honest meter is a non issue when you have the tekken cast’s lengthy combos and blockstrings that build meter. Hell they didn’t even fix important issues like boost combos whiffing for boost combo reliant characters (ie. Cammy, Poison, Ibuki, etc).
If you are running a street fighter team (excluding Chun) you’re essentially running a gimmick team. They don’t even do fundamentals better, because characters like Nina, Law, Julia, Ogre, and Alisa have far better spacing tools in general and once again Chun Li is the only exception here.
And omg the time it takes just for a match to complete is ridiculous sometimes. If you’re going up against Law or Hwaorang then it’s the most slow paced match ever witnessed. Even with Hwao going ham essentially not a damn is happening you’re just holding back and he is pressing 2 buttons. And every now and then he tries for an overhead but it’s easy enough to react to so you’re just sitting there waiting for him to try and grab or until you can AC. =|
Holy damn this game is not fun to play. (It’s pretty fun to watch outside of Kaz, Hwao, Law, and Chun) At this point it’s like a chore for me. I’m like "well I put 80 into this might as well get some mileage out of it." Waits online for 40 minutes for 1 guy to join He either sucks or he plays Law Hwao. In which case the level of my boredom rivals that of Akuma jump back fireball vs Makoto.
And even then I would play the game if only there were more people playing online. Even in cases where I had added good players after playing them in really long sets (sometimes 20 matches) they couldn’t be bothered to accept. So essentially I had to wait for randoms or go on IRC. Which is in stark contrast to SF4 where I could find a good player and they’re decent enough people to accept a friend request so we could continue playing. I mean DarkPhyre was the only guy that did that out of like the 30 forum posters I played =|.
AND Oh My FUCKING GOD yo… I fought so many neon colored guys on pitstop 109 it made me want to smash the disc. Why do people even do this? And why the fuck isn’t there an option to disable people’s customizations?!
/end rant
Edit: Feel free to disagree with my opinion on the AAs. I just always felt that Tekken characters should’ve been mixup based and SF should’ve been fundamentals.
Yea, Ryu got nerfed, but he’s still VERY viable. I play him as a main (have been and always shall for this game and others), and at times, I end up being more dependent on him than I am on Hwoarang. Not ALL the time, but Ryu’s game plan is simpler, so it allows me to keep everything in focus. Also, defense is still very strong, and it’s not that hard to wall someone out if need be. Ryu’s definitely one of the better SF characters, even after the nerfs.
Although, I will say that the Tekken cast is currently too strong in general. SF chars still lack meterless damage, and pale in comparison in overall solo damage and combo potential. Tekken chars have the combos, the damage, some of them have the footsies, and now they have the AAs. Still, if everyone keeps bashing the game and showing ZERO interest, there’s no way this will ever get looked over. >_>
With that said, characters like Vega, Dhalsim, Ryu, and Gief are still VERY strong choices, and the SF side isn’t lagging that far behind outside of characters like Poison and Hugo, and even Poison’s still manageable outside of that. If anything, it’s that the top Tekken chars are a deal too strong.
I think his cr. MP and cr. HP need a nerf. He basically obligates people to walk into a range where he can mash on a 4-frame medium that reaches as far as a Shoto’s sweep. I mean, I don’t want him hit too bad, but there needs to be some sort of give-n-take on moves with such long reach. Maybe make it so that his claw comes off easier or something? Idk, but those two buttons are straight up troll status without FADC or parries to absorb them.
That’s certainly one universal option. If you do it twice, he’s probably dead depending on your team. Invincible attacks work too, and again you can net tremendous damage on most of them. More still are naturally safe or can be made safe. Many more moves can whiff punish, counterhit or TRADE with it for huge damage.
If you get inside that range, he’s generally toast. This game is very unforgiving of Vega’s weaknesses and once you’re in, two guesses will kill him. Many characters can make these guesses rapidly with relative impunity, to boot.
I LOVE Vega. He’s my absolute favorite character in any game, my main in generally any game he’s in, etc but for all the hype he’s given in this title, I think he’s quite overrated. I feel he’s actually better in SFIV.
He lacks many of his strengths (kara grab for instance) and his weaknesses are magnified.
He does have some new strengths (400 damage for full solo punish w jumpin, boost is safe) but the effectiveness of these fails to carry him imo.
Many characters can do more than Vega’s optimal damage with simple bnbs and relatively safe mixups.
A proper read on a single poke devestates his health and puts him in a kd situation, nullifying his great ground normals.
His best aa options, too, are worse in this game where he needs them even more. Air throw is slower and less rewarding, nj.hk is beaten ean by many more moves and being beaten leads to much larger punishments (though it does reward Vega more greatly when it lands)
The lack of the kara throw, the much improved risk to trying to frametrap with him and his general weakness to pressure all serve to further amplify those weaknesses, too.
I’m still improving and refining, but that’s my perspective now and I have no lack of experience with the character.
Advice and games online to level up are welcome. But. Yeah.
Some more strengths I forgot to mention are crossup j.hp, 1frame link from PoM and alpha counter, but again, many characters do the first two (cross up, combo from overhead) more easily, more effectively and with greater reward than Claw and Alpha Counter costs bar and is literally his only answer to pressure, having its own risks as well.
Forgot to mention the rampant presence of low crush on moves other than raw launch and counters also do him no favors, too.
I don’t think balancing should be based solely on psychic reads. I mean, if you look at a counter or a DP, you get that very strong, dominant priority from the move, but there’s a downside to that gamble. In Vega’s case, he’s in a favorable scenario…and ends in a favorable scenario: Out of reach and ready to press more buttons if you try to attack him. That’s definitely an issue for me. It’s not like some others where they’ll be safe, but be in a position where they’ll have to play defense. Vega can just keep hitting buttons. I don’t like that.
To boot, any jump-in is pretty much beaten and crushed by his neutral HK. I can understand him having a strong ground game if his air game wasn’t straight turned up to the max with that buff. neutral jump HK beats most (if not all) other air options + gives a free juggle state. Not sure why he’d need all that if his ground game’s already so strong.
Neutral jump hk can be beaten. Pretty soundly. It happens to me, and, I do it to other Vegas.
I see you’re having a hard time getting in, and you’re supposed to since that is in fact his only strength. It is not, however, as difficult as you’re making it seem.
I can almost not believe you’re serious.
Plus, when you do get in, he’s free to pretty much anything. He can’t reversal, backdash, anything but block and block CORRECTLY.
