The Official PS3 thread

^if Sony actually listens to that blog(any evidence of that?) then that is awesome. I totally agree on PS2 compat., in WHATEVER form. I still have my PS2 but it’s a pain because I have to switch a bunch of cords around every time.

Considering that I have tons of unplayed PS2 games, and that I’ve bought two PS2s just to have them fail on me (while my PSX is still in working condition), yes I’d want a PS3 that’s backwards compatible. Fuck you to everyone who says BC isn’t important.

For real, sir. I still want goddamn BC on all PS3s, if they can do it via software. Sometimes I have an urge to play stuff like FFXII and I don’t want to have to pull out the ol’ PS2 to do so.

Aw come on Big Sexy, BC is not that important!

And do you mean composite cable? Because a PS2 connected with component or s-video cables looks great, just like any system connected with those kind of cables, and you really can’t tell the difference between s-video/component PS2 and the PS3’s “upscaling”.

People talking about having to pull out old system (omg the ps2 is so old!) out of their closet or under their bed just to play a game, wtf people. I dont know any tv made in the past 15 years that doesnt have at least four inputs. Shit, I’ve got all seven of my systems hooked up at once, no switching or pulling out necessary.

the new ps2 redesign looks pretty sexy.

You’re fucking crazy, man. I had a PS2 hooked up to my HDTV and it looked like SHIT with component. Looked quite a bit better on the PS3 with dat BC. DON’T TRY TO CORRECT ME LIKE I DON’T KNOW MY CABLES MR HOLLYWOOD.

I agree with you completely RC, and I dunno how to say this without coming off troll-y but people tend to just rationalize out the BC. "Oh it’s not that important, I don’t really play my ps2 games. Blah blah. I don’t see why people get so defensive on the side of things they have nothing to gain from. It’s like defending paying for something when it could be free (not talking about stealing/piracy, think more like XBL vs PSN or DLC in general.)

I disagree with some of the directions the PS3 has gone with, but I’m not going to lie I’m surprised how successful it has been regardless. I really thought it would go the way of the virtual boy or whatnot but they managed to hold on somehow. It was really rough going for a while with the millions of different incarnations and changes (60g, 20g, 80g, phasing out of BC, etc).

I think the things for me that I like about ps3 is

-Free online (regardless of quality debates, it’s FUCKING FREE. Can’t argue with that shit)
-Changable hard drives. Granted I don’t know too much about this, but I like the sound of just being able to put any hard drive in, rather than some bullshit propietary hard drive that costs 100 bucks for 20 gigs.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I think the difference between game and console design any more is a cultural thing. In America and the west we are really big on user feedback, focus groups, really deep analysis of the market and what’s happening.

Japan is sort of like “fuggit let’s just make whatever”. They tend to not give much of a shit if people want a function or not. It seems like a lot of companies want to ride on name brand power rather than appealing to consumers wants.

Now the obvious thing here to state is “hold on, most people are idiots, I don’t want them making design choices in the things I like!”. I completely understand and agree, I just think the market Japan tends to pander to is one specific type. They really stick to tradition and formulas. While they may have some new ideas it tends to come through the vehicle of a tired, overused gameplay model.

The ultimately fucked up thing is that even though those 3 things turned up on top of a official sony blog, I guarantee this means shit to them. Maybe I’m just jaded but I was a huge PS2 fan and I had a very specific want from the ps3. They completely had my sale without question, and they kept doing things that made me turn my head like “uhhh I don’t know that I want that”. It became clear to me that it was less about what I wanted, and more about what sony wanted. I definitely felt a disconnect between the consumer and the bigwigs calling the shots. Which is extremely unfortunate.

Don’t even get me started on Microsoft giving up on BC.

Sorry if this comes off trolly/negative. Just giving honest feedback, not trying to incite flames…please do not freak out on me as I have no allegiance to any console or gaming company.

Bent out of shape is a big word. There’s good jokes on srk and then there’s old and depleted ones lol. Anyway I gotta agree with you on the FF13 versus part at least. I’m pretty sure it will do better than FF13 solely because of the team that is involved on it. And iirc the game will also have Nojima (FF7-FF10) scenario writer and no more crappy Toriyama.

guys can you give me some good air combos to use in bayonetta? i’m not feeling the gameplay at all since i’m getting my ass handed to me on hard that it’s not even funny.

Got a Bayonetta thread for that.

Search.

Jesus christ the first boss on RoF killed me 4 times. It’s pretty obvious how to beat him because there are some walking platforms with oildrums on them, but it’s hard to get them bunched together enough to make it blow up on the boss. Luckily on the 5th time I was able to get it finally and destroyed him but damn.

Yakuza 2 Info

[details=Spoiler]
Yeah it’s going to be kind of weird, I hope it reaches the point where he is a teen because he did have scruffs with the Korean Mafia around that time and story wise it’s interesting to see how he climbs the Yakuza ranks. If anything this might be the grittiest one of all because he has to do things that he doesn’t want to do. I know many sites have said the word “boy” but I did read an article saying that he was going to be a teen. Ry? ga Gotoku Kenzan! was also a weird departure from the Yakuza series, I know Samurai’s are ingrained in Yakuza culture, but for some reason I don’t want to get the game even if it’s translated.[/details]

Most of the newer features in the PS3 OS were suggested by the fans posting on the PS Blog, including the implementation of in-game XMB and custom soundtracks.

We know Cross-Game Chat is coming, but internal documents suggest Sony wants to make it part of the Premium service they plan to launch soon.

Any other speculations on what the premium service will provide?

One of the main reasons is because there were literally barely any games that supported HD for the PS2. Like I can only remember 5 or so that supported it.

Probably tokens for use on the Playstation Store.

I know they were throwing around the idea “full version” demos, where you download the full version of a game, but could only play it for 2 hours or so.

I’d also say preferential treatment on betas.

I definitely liked the idea of extended warranties for Premium members.

Definitely upvote these two ideas. Backing up ALL your saves without having to backup your entire HDD is a must.

It’s looking so good, that it kind of makes me wish Squeenix would just bite the bullet and slap the ol’ numerical into it’s moniker, and dub it: “FF15”.

My mood just shifted from normal to great.

My brother picked up RoF, and I just got early leave from work. This day just suddenly got brighter.

That shit sucks when you run out of Hero.
Holy shit ;(
