The Official PS3 thread

I’d say the PS1. The jump from SNES/Genesis to Saturn/PS1 was mind-blowing. The jump from PS1 to PS2… not so much.

shatta likes P. Gorath’s comment.

I feel DC and PS2 are tied but better than PSX?

that’s a stretch. too many epic games came out on PSX.

I’d say calling the first PlayStation the best console ever is fair. SNES is up there too. NES, though? Ehh…I mean, I had one, but there were just as many shitty games on that system as any other, and I’m one of those “games are only getting better” kind of people.

Meh truly it is all subjective. For example tge memories I had with FFX, KH, or DMC were timeless. Even when I played SOCOM for the first time it was all new to me. And I just had a PSX in the 90s so only time could play SNES/N64 was at a friends house, I always played SMW. PS2 Christmas was soooo hype. I think also the PS2 it brought around the triple A titles we know today (marketing and scale) I loved PSX but 2 brought everything up IMO

Yea man X-Mas 92, aka Genesis X-Mas is just unfoorgettable for me. A new Genny and Sonic 2? My love was solidified.

70% of my best gaming memories were on the PS2. 30% was PS1. So PS2 is GoaT for me. Don’t really care for any of the other older consoles, really.

I like the SNES for the Donkey Kong Country series(I contend to this day that Donkey Kong Country 2 is one of the best platformers ever), Super Mario World(I contend to this day that Super Mario World is the best platformer ever), and Super Mario RPG. Genesis had its occasional gem. I never was(and probably never will be) a big Sonic the Hedgehog fan, but X-Men 2: Clone Wars and Beyond Oasis are two of my favorite games ever. Additionally, the Genesis versions of Earthworm Jim, Earthworm Jim 2, and Boogerman were much better than they were on the SNES.

snes, nes or psx are the GOAT systems IMO.
there’s no way in hell ps2 is in that category. you could put DC in the above category…genesis too, obviously, but ps2? you have to be young to think its the GOAT IMO.

i agree with pretty much everything in this post above.

i still own all of my snes games even if i don’t have the system anymore.

Nothing was more satisfying than X-Men 2: Clone Wars, Wolverine’s horizontal slash (looked sorta like a buzz saw when he sliced through the air). The visuals and the sound effect was too good.

You mean when shit went downhill! 16bit era was the best.

It’s one of my favorite games ever. The variety in the characters, the sweet-ass music, the amazing level design, everything was just fantastic in that shit.

Anyways, I think I contributed heavily into the turn for the off-topic this thread is taking, so I’ll try to set things back on track.
How about that Uncharted 2? Damn fine game, that Uncharted 2.

In terms of the best good to crap ratio? You can give it to SNES (as I stated before) but still, that platform that hosts at least 5 of my top 10 all time is ps2

super mario rpg was good but was too easy and i agree with the dkc series. dkc2 has to be one of my favorite games of all time

I believe the PS2, much like the PSX had a big list of games.
…but before the PS3, my gaming experience was 50-50 between those two.

Personally I would have a hard time arguing for the NES being at the top of my list of systems. There were some great games, arguably some of the most enjoyable, but IMO, it was only a “for their time” thing with the majority those games.

Going back and playing a lot of them now, I just can’t enjoy it the way I used to. River City Ransom is one of the few exceptions for me, and maybe Mario 2. Whereas the 16-bit games I can still genuinely go and spend a lot of time playing and enjoying the experience still to this day. Genesis as well as SNES. Actually I’d probably put them about 50/50 in hindsight.

(Fuck yeah Landstalker, Sword of Vermillion, Phantasy Star, Jurassic Park, Moonwalker, Shining Force, Power Rangers [bite me, game was legit], Comix Zone [I still have the CD that came with this game.], Toe Jam and Earl, etc etc:lovin:)

But yeah, damn, there were some great games. Anyone here go to the UK-based site, “Pleasuredome”? (Not as sketchy as it sounds)

It’s weird. I either do really well or really badly in Uncharted 2. Some games I’m at the top of my team with seventeen kills, other times I’m at the bottom of the game and making a lot of money from “Unlucky” medals.

I agree that it’s mostly purely nostalgia, but there’s still a lot of classic gems that I can still go back and play even now.

Contra, Super C, Blaster Master, Castlevania 1-3, Blades of Steel, Double Dragon 2, Bionic Commando, Super Mario 1-3, Ducktales, Mega Man 1-6, Excitebike, Life Force, RC Pro Am, Rygar, Little Nemo: The Dream Master, Metroid, Punch-Out, Ninja Gaiden 1-3, Star Tropics, Wizards & Warriors.

The original Punch Out will never go away.

Ever.

Its the best boxing game ever.

Regarding the Yellow Light of Death (hasn’t happened to me knocks on wood), I know that overheating and a poor cooling/venting design are the primary causes, but are certain models more prone to this than others or is it all across the board (I read that it’s more common in 60G/80G versions than 40G)? I have the 80G/MGS4 bundle version that I bought in the summer of 2008. Also, does it matter how often you play it? I read of PS3 users that leave their systems on for days, weeks, and months at a time. I always shut mine down when I’m done playing, which is something I’ve always done with my consoles. I actually go through periods every now and then where it’s left off for a few weeks/months. Does this not matter? I make sure that the vents are clear and that the doors on the entertainment cabinet are open so that it doesn’t get too hot inside. I’ve been somewhat aware of YLOD for a few years, but I keep hearing and reading different things regarding the cause, prevention, and fixing of such a thing.

Pre-Slim models, especially the 20gb and BC 60gb, are the most susceptable. I keep my 60GB in a wide open space with nothing even possibly blocking the vents. It runs ok, just the fan kicks up to noticable volume whenever I play too long or the room is over 70 degrees.

Just clean out your vents with a low power vacuum, keep it clean and well-ventilated, and you should be fine. If you’re that worried about dust, get a small cover or fabric to cover it up while it’s off.

I keep suspecting people who get the YLOD don’t keep their PS3 in the best kept conditions sometimes.
