The Official Post your Arcade Cabinet Thread!

The whole point of cabs is that you can mash as hard as you can & it wont budge…I think the control panel alone will be heavier then the base which isn’t a good thing IMO.

Once you get everything mounted (Hardware, Monitor, etc…) it will be pretty heavy. Not big blue heavy, but pretty heavy. I’m planning on making this a Back to Back setup, so it will be joined in the middle, but splittable.

I just dont see how, but post pics when you’re done…Sounds awesome…I actually worked on my arcades yesterday for like 5 hours straight just trying to tweak the monitor…

Of course i will remove the wheels and add MDF to it. Tried testing it out with my HRAP Premium VLX on it and it moves a bit but it can be fixed.

It what I’ve been thinking of. I plan on having the control panel and a compartment where I can slide my HRAP V3 SA into it. which would be easy with the sides of the stick. I’m also going to art mod it but if everything fails I’ll just gut it and make a control panel.

You guys need to post pics when completed…

Anyway, got the speakers for my Kraylix slims…For some reason the grills turned out be squares which looks a bit weird for me…Other people like them though…I was thinking of painting the grill red w/ white borders, or maybe no grills at all or should i just keep as is…

I like the square grills. Looks a bit different then everyone else’s Kray. Looks better.

I originally wasn’t thinking about the actual sides to the vewlix stick but the entire side panels that hold the monitor, speakers and marquee. Check this image from Kray’s site, visualize the stand as the bottom half and the sides along with the top as a simple addon. Kray also sells stand alone pedestals as well and they come out quite nice too. Either way i think this would be quite an interesting project.

I’m looking into building a MAME cabinet for my house. Ideally, I’d like to find a nice candy cab and build it in there.

What is a reasonable price for a cab with no guts? I guess I could just build one…

Depending on the cabinet style and this is purely opinion I wouldn’t pay over a $100 for a gutted cab with a coin door. An example in my opinion of a good gutted cabinet is a Mortal Kombat 1-4 no water damage etc… with a coin door. I think those are rather plentiful and have the most potential. As far as finding a candy cabinet the price is really dependent on the cabinet style itself. I’ve paid as little as $200 for a New Astro and $1700 for my LCD candy.
Also if you do go MAME, romlister is your friend. I can’t stand going to a friends house picking a game on mame that isn’t compatible with his setup.

Thought I’d share my arcade cabinet project, based on the Taito Vewlix with my own touches. Still have a few cosmetics to complete but it’s up and running with a PC and Xbox 360 inside. Used advice and write-ups from other custom Vewlix projects around the web.

I’ve hooked up two Mad Catz Tournament Edition Arcade Sticks, as they are USB they work perfect with both the PC and Xbox 360. I can switch the sticks between the PC and 360 by a press of a button on the front of the cabinet.

I was bought up on the Sega Megadrive, SNES and N64 era (early / mid 90’s) and in the arcades Street Fighter 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Bubble Bobble etc… where very popular in local shops and at college.

The cabinet itself has a 32" LCD screen, this helped in making it fairly slim depth wise as space in the house is limited.

The PC runs Windows 7x64 and boots straight into GameEx and then can be controlled via the sticks. I’ve designed a custom GameEx theme based on the Viewlix colours and artwork, this goes well with the marquee at the top.

There is also a video below showing the GameEx interface in action and near the end my children are having a play on it, even though I don’t get a chance to spend much time on it the kids absolutely love it, especially retro’s such as Metal Slug, The Simpsons, scrolling beat’em ups etc… which are perfect for them with the simple controls.

The Xbox 360 is mainly used for the 2 player beat’em ups such as Super Street Fighter 4 (X Tekken), Mortal Kombat, KOF, Soul Calibur etc…

Looks really good kemikal! The only thing i dont like is that Madcatz sticks, those are awful…You should build a control panel. Also, i notice the games are being played widescreen? Is there any difference in gameplay?

I finished working on my ghetto MAME setup too last night, finally fixed the controls. I was playing some game called Karate Tournament or something like that, cheap mofos i tell you! I’ll post up pics or video.

Thanks for the feedback, I already had the pair Madcatz sticks so thought I’d put them to use. It’s an on going project so a dedicated control panel is planned in the future. I know there is debate about running retro games widescreen or not but I personally prefer the fullscreen, they look fine to me with HQX or XBR filters enabled and gameplay is not affected.

Here is my Xbox cab vid i just did…

Yeah even a modded xbox is legit. I have one myself. I use it for all snes. I learned about coinops, but never got around it it.

Slick. XBMC is a better looking dashboard than EvoX if you want to just play around with things. I also like FBA XXX for CPS2/Neo-Geo over CoinOPS but it’s been a while. I’ve got to admit those video previews are slick.

Nice gloves. Poor HF machine. :frowning:

The Xbox idea is pretty nice and I’d love to use it on a different cab. Just that I feel bad for the loss of a SF2HF Dynamo(?) cab if it didn’t come completely gutted to you originally. That’s just me tho, so please don’t take it as criticism. Short of a big blue or a Showcase to a lesser degree, I always liked these the best out of American style cabs and I still want one to this day in hopefully good enough shape to salvage it with Happ/iL parts and everything else I remember loving about those cabs years ago.

Was it difficult or expensive to obtain or mod an Xbox like that? I have one gathering dust and I’m not sure if I want to get it modded in a similar way or just pay for a pre-modded one. I’m not really willing to go the mod route myself as I don’t want to deal with the work and don’t have the time either.

He has a mod chip. There are software routes although they are less recoverable if you screw something up. All in all it is not hard though it is a tad on the time consuming time. See if you can find someone local to assit.

Not sure if there’s a better place to post this, but is something like this a good deal for a working MvC2 cabinet?

I don’t have the time or money or truck to go out and get something like this, but it seems like it’s a good deal.

MvC2 cabinet and others

Yeah my xbox was modded w/ 250gb hd…It was very expensive, i think i paid $400 for it…You can probably goto craigslist and find someone to softmod your xbox for $20…

The Hyper Fighting was my first cab. I traded it for a used xbox. I had no idea about arcade stuff at the time except i just wanted a cab even though it didn’t work, used it for decoration purposes…Once Hyper Fighting came out for the 360 it was on…I threw away the monitor & put a CRT tv on there…Put in a pad hack 360 & blam i was playing people the good ol USA without having to leave my gameroom…It was hella an experience despite the shitty lag…

I forgot to add that the modded xbox cabinet, has a supergun inside…So i can still play jamma stuff…But yeah i understand what you’re saying…I get that sick feeling too or just wrinkle forehead every time i see someone tear the guts up or completely modify a cab…Maybe one day ill restore it.
