Stop being an elitist…
Mine are definitely JAMMA and I wouldn’t have it any other way if I can avoid it. Thankfully both of my cabs came wired for JAMMA and not gutted or anything. I can also still use PSX/2/3 and Dreamcast on it, which is a nice touch but not essential for me. Emulation is something I’d like to avoid if at all possible as I never liked the “feel” of it. It’s always felt off compared to the original boards. Why bother if the real thing is available? I never really understood the point of turning a JAMMA setup to MAME on purpose. It has nothing to do with being elitist, but more of a personal preference.
Its someone’s cab, if they feel like making it mame let them…If they want a 360 arcade cabinet let them…I dont see how that can bother people…
Just curious how were you able to have jamma/psx/dc controls? Can you post your setup & inside of the control panel.
I feel this statement so hard. Of course people WANT to have a mini arcade in thier house, I would love to have ST, VS, JJBA, MVC2, CVS2, ect, but getting all those set ups is going to cost an arm and a leg. Thats looking at 4 dedicated cabs so now you have to worry about space as well. For those of us in an apartment, maybe you have a family, thats really just not feasible. But, a mame set up with most if not all the games you want to play in one dedicated cabinet is way more functional and cheaper. You can always update your cab to a dedicated set up if you get more funds / time / space anyways.
I strongly support this statement, a candy should never be made in to a mame cab. That’s just sacrilege.
I really don’t see what the issue is as long as we’re leaving the process reversible. I could get my cab back to stock in 10 minutes. I can understand the purist position. I wish I had money for boards. I don’t. I have a kiddo and he is the priority financially. I can scrounge up 600 for a cab but I’m not about to drop a 200 on a game. Maybe some day when the cash is flowing…
There is NOTHING wrong with what you did to YOUR cab. It’s YOURS. All you did was restore it and upgrade it to be able to play both Jamma and Console. How is that a bad thing when you’ve adapted it to be more functional!? It isn’t.
Now let’s see some more cabs people!!!
It has nothing to do with elitism. If you want to install MAME or a console do something like that VLX clone. Taking a functional candy, which do cost money, and then turning it into MAME is just insanity. It’s a logic fail “I want an authentic arcade to play authentic games” except your authentic games aren’t.
You’re pretty much half assing it.
You want a MAME cab well buy a DIY MAME or butcher an old American cab, but leave the Candies alone. People don’t appreciate cabs anymore and just act like spoiled brats saying “it’s mine I do whatever I want” “I bought it with my own money” “it’s mine, it’s my cab”. Whatever.
I having a hard time understanding these arguments. It is just as easy to convert a cab back to arcade standard, as it is to convert it to MAME. Jesus Christ…its just wires people. You act like MAME guys are ruining the cabs for someone else, when that is simply not the case.
I personally don’t care for MAME, and I do run arcade boards. But I also run a 360 in one of my cabs, because I’m not paying $2000-$3000 for a Taito setup to play SFIV.
Well, it is their cabinet, and they can do whatever they want with it. Why get bent out of shape just because people aren’t using original PCBs? I understand why someone might only use authentic hardware in their own cab, but trying to tell other people how to enjoy theirs just sounds pushy and rude.
How dare you disrespect Taito and Street Fighter IV! You are the worst kind of person! [/sarcasm]
This thread took some kind of crazy turn. I did not pull the cab out of an arcade (hint: we don’t even have any in my small ass town). I bought it from an SRK member who had tired of it and wanted to replace it with a pinball table. Now I play on it nearly every day. I get where you guys are coming from. I buy music on vinyl. I don’t go around telling iPod owners that their 128kbps mp3s are an abomination of music. They’d look at me confused and laugh.
Haha! I am, really though…
Kyle, your cab looks great! I’m glad you finally got one.
I still gotta get my cabs posted up, but one of them always seems to be in middle of some kind of upgrade or repair, which ruins the group shot:looney:
Yeah, the way a few people are talking here, you would think we’re ripping the cabs apart and leaving none of the original internals and replacing the screen with an off-the-shelf PC monitor or something, when that simply isn’t the case. Just to spell it out, here is the setup I use on my Astro City:
All original internals and parts, monitor, buttons and all.
2 padhacked PS1 pads underneath the control panel wired to the buttons, still completely usable with the cab itself by simply plugging in the connectors to the cab.
An Extron Emotia VGA-RGBS scan converter with RGBS output wired to a JAMMA fingerboard, thus leaving all connections to the monitor intact (and also protecting the monitor from any possible damage from VGA resolutions)
So with this setup, all I need to do when playing my 360 on the cab is connect to the JAMMA fingerboard and remove the connectors wiring the controls to the JAMMA loom. Then, when I want to play a PCB (I own DoDonPachi and Aero Fighters right now), I simply reconnect the control wiring and move the JAMMA connector over to the PCB. Bam, done.
Just to piss off the elites here’s an old pic of my atomiswave w/ 360 haha

In a couple of weeks hopefully there will be some threesome action w/ some Astro’s…
Nice man!
I have to ask you…
When I have 2 setups plus my cabs on, plus participants, my room gets HOT… with that many cabs, how do you not die in that room?
sirlin mix in a CANDY CAB? THIS IS MADNESS!
I live in WA, its not hot haha…Actually my gameroom has changed a bit…I have Daytona2 twins, showcase cab w/ Extreme Hungting & Sportshooting USA, HyperFighting cab, & Gauntlet Dark Legacy in there now…
My other cabs (Atomiswave, showcase ST, Neogeo, & Vewlix Clone) are currently in the garage as i have my SF gatherings bi-weekly…Asian wife dont like people inside the house haha…
As for the Astro, not sure if going to do head to head or just make one vertical & the other ps3:rofl:…
rcadio: re: PSX/DC hookup in my Astro City cabs, I forget the names of the devices themselves, but essentially each one is a board with an edge connector that connects with the JAMMA hookup. The video and sound is sent to the monitor/speakers and they each one has plugs to the console and A/B/C + joystick directions work by default. I’ll take pictures later on when I’m home.
It’s fine for shmups and other stuff, but I need to figure out a solution for the 4 button and above games going forward. I’m thinking I’ll do something similar to what drunkninja42 is doing and go with a PS1 padhack + DC converter.
Makes me wish I had cabs with tri-sync monitors. I didn’t know that New Astro City had those. I’m very happy with how the video looks as-is on my cabs, but for sure the VGA plug would be much easier to work with. Right now, I can’t throw a 360 in there but I probably wouldn’t want to anyway since I can’t get anything better than 480i output. It’s fine for the older stuff, but not after I’ve been spoiled by high def consoles. PS3 games look like shit on my cab.
HD Remix on a cab? Uggh. To each his own, I guess…
HD Remix is the greatest game ever created, yes greater then Daytona 2, greater then Point Blank, greater then even Hyper Fighting! I wish it had an arcade release!
New Astro City dont come w/ Tri-sync stock, as far as i know Blast City, Atomiswave, & Egret 3 are the only cabs the come stock w/ Tri-sync monitors.
Have you tried Viletims console adapter? You use scart cables for the hookup, looks pretty amazing…
