thats poker in general. not just internet poker…

stop crying about it, coz more people will say you suck…

but yea… I honestly think for most of you, internet poker should be used for WHORING bonus purposes only…

there would be NO reason for me to play online if not for that.

edit: if i may ask, i was wondering if anybody has time to coach me or something. maybe some sessions or giving me advice would be good while we play. i feel that it’s the only way i can learn besides reading and listening. thanks i’d appreciate that

Without ever having seen you play, I would imagine that you play too many hands and especially play too many hands in poor position.
Probably the best way to fix this is to track your play. The best tool by far on the internet to track your play with is Poker Tracker (www.pokertracker.com ). The fee is a little steep, but if you’re serious about online poker, it’s an invaluable tool.

The main thing you want to do with PT is check the % of hands you’re playing and to check the profitability of the hands you’re playing. Ideally on a 10handed table you want to be voluntarily playing 15-21% of hands. The less experience you have, the smaller this number should be. For example, my VP$IP is sitting at 17.81. I’m slightly tighter than optimal, but mostly because I try to stay away from trap hands.
Which is the second thing you should be tracking. How are you playing the hands that you have. For example when I first bought the program, I looked through my stats and noticed that after 30,000 hands, AKo was in my bottom 5 hands! It shocked me because it’s a premium hand and yet I was losing money with it. It showed me that I have to learn how to play overcards better and not take it too far.
Also I learned that I was losing significant amounts of money with trap hands. As I sit right now, KJs is at -0.12 BB/100. QJs is at 0.29 BB/100. QTo is at -0.09 BB/100. K9s is at -0.09 BB/100. JTs is at -0.31 BB/100. JTo is at -0.04 BB/100. These stats tell me that I’m playing my trap hands too strongly and too often. The numbers are crawling up slowly and maybe someday they’ll recover back into positive like AKo did for me. But there’s still a lesson to be learned here and if I want to improve I’m going to have to start plugging these weaknesses. It’s not that these hands don’t have value. They do. Just that I’m overvaluing them and playing them in situations that don’t turn a profit. This is what PT has taught me.

Also you can use it to keep statistics, notes and tendencies on your opponents, but that’s not nearly as important as looking inwards at yourself. Again, if you’re serious about playing poker online and improving your play, this is worth it’s weight in gold.

EDIT:
The second best thing you can do is join a poker forum and start posting hand examples. 2+2 is some help, even if it does usually degenerate into juvenile bickering. I use ITH (Internet Texas Holdem) to post hand examples and that helps out tremendously. Most of the time the posters give good advice and can really help you out if you have a problem on a specific hand and will give you a place to build from. Here’s an example of a post I made and I got a lot of quality responses, even if it did kind of degenerate into an online cock contest. http://www.internettexasholdem.com/phpbb2/too-weak-with-kings-or-good-laydown-vt26563.html

Good luck to you.

First of all when you watch poker on TV (which you should be if you aren’t) actually pay attention. Watch the hands people are playing and what they do with them.

I dont have any advice for limit games because anyone that plays suited connectors will win big pots whenever I’m involved with them. Thats why I play No Limit cash games with low stakes.

Anyways just because people are successful it doesn’t mean that you will be too. I can gurantee you aren’t being patient enough with your hands. When you see people winning like $500 a night, it’s not because they’re winning every hand, its because their limits are probably 5x the limit you’re playing and they’re waiting for hands. If you can win 1 big hand an hour with a few small pots here and there, you should be able to win money. Unless you have a really bad run, which happens and is unavoidable sometimes.

now that i look closer at what i did wrong, i agree with everything you guys said. pretty much 99% is true about the way i played. and especially that AKo story…those turn out to be mostly non-profit for me too. i guess i should understand a little better.thanks guys. much <3

some hands that really bums me are hands like KK and AA…betting all-in when someone else has lower pairs, and i lose on the river (i told DreadedFist my other hands and he seems to agree with me). but like ya’ll said, it’s my problem and no the cards.

Wtf do you do when you just can’t hit cards, like i played a 10 man sit and go today and the best thing i hit all night was a pair of kings. I managed to bluff a few hands, but not for that much money and it’s not possible to bluff every hand you have. Even the hands i was folding before the flop nothing that came up after would have helped me.

You lose. At a cash game, you try not to lose too much money.

There are times when I’ll lose big and think to myself ā€œwow I played great!ā€ because I could have lost so much more. Sometimes you are just destined to lose and the best you can do is minimize the damage. Nobody wins all the time.

wow i couldn’t said that better myself

congrads to the winners

hey ya’ll i just wanna post up that i’ve been playing on Stars for sometime now. and i’ve kept all of your advices. my game is actually improving. i play hands that are more stronger/marginal than usual. i stopped playing low cards because well…i found out it was NOT profitable. suited connecters usually draw me into pots, but now i avoid them and thus saving loads of chips =). i’m being more patient now to my game and i’m considering a lot of things from the Theory of Poker. but most importantly, thanks u guys for showing me the light.
it was about 1 week after u guys told me, but i feel that my game has changed already.

Wow, that’s the best poker posting I have ever seen. I’m no pro, but one thing I’ve relized about poker is that in the end, you always lose. Sure you might be up some money here or there, but in the end a better player will come to take it. There are no real Masters of poker; there are just too many variables such as luck, and being outplayed.
Not saying there are not poeple that win, or there are any people out there that can’t get good at it, but it is all a gamble in the end. Poker is one of those few things where you could make the exact desicion you should have made, and still end up losing. Although a good way around that fallacy is to whore internet bounuses.

I just started playing on Pokerstars last night.

First hand is A-A. I do moderate raise, one person gets out.

Flop comes out A-K-A.

That was fun.

Edit: Is there a guide of the hands that I should play in various positions? I only know to play the ā€˜good hands’ (pocket pairs, AK, AQ). However, I don’t know how to play them from various positions, can anyone here shed some light on this subject?

Too bad you’re wrong, thats usually what poker scrubs say as a copout…
