Hey all,<div style=“font-style: normal;”><br></div><div>I know people have been asking about system builds, yet I have a much more humble proposition ; ) I have a pretty mobile lifestyle, and am looking for a laptop that can play AE2012 & maybe the new Skullgirls (PC) on max settings, but most importantly <i>without graphics lag</i>. Here’s what I’m looking at: http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-V3-771G-6851-17-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B009JXK17G/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=11ISCPD0O1ZKK&coliid=I3AQ306OZLDL8G</div><div><br></div><div>Any thoughts??</div>

So I’ve been wanting to build a new desktop for quite some time now. I finally have some extra cash and will be starting to buy things piece by piece. I had about a $1500-$1800 budget but my wife and I just bought a new king size memory foam mattress so that took a bit out of my computer funds. I’m looking at about a $1000 range. I don’t need anything real high end because I don’t play anything that has real high reqs. I’ll mainly be playing League of Legends, Diablo 3 and maybe some Starwars The Old Republic. I don’t know too much about computers so any help/input would be great. This is what I was looking at, I’m open to changing anything in the build.
Coolmaster HAF 932 Case
AMD Pheonom II X4 Black Edition 3.4 GHz
Radeon HD 7850 1 GB
G Skill Ripjaw X Series 16 GB
ASRock 970 Extreme3 AM3+ Motherboard
WD 500 GB HD
What kind of power supply would I need and would it be worth putting in a small SSD?
Thanks for your time guys.
Current changes to my PC

Added a Corsair H50 paired with a Noctua Fan. There another Noctua Fan in the front as a intake fan, its hard to see in the firstpicture as its squeezed between the front bezel and the HDD rack
That small red bit of cord going to a silver cord is my side panel fan, its currently a Enermax fan but I going to later switch that to a Noctura fan as well.
Only PC part that feels warm to the touch after 48 hours of running stress tests is the Corsair radiator and water block/water pump.
And its mildly warm, not hot.
I haven’t had a desktop for about 10 years now. Can someone do a build for me for video editing/HTPC/Gaming…
I would like to spend about $1500 but if i need to i can go up to $2000.
If you really want to invest in a PC, you may want to do your own research and come to your own conclusions. That said, I quickly priced out a build anyway. I’m going to assume you already have a monitor + keyboard + mouse. If not, I can make some room in the budget for them.
This is just me, but this is what I’d do with $1500. It’s a straight desktop build(full-tower case at the moment), so if you want something more “entertainment center friendly” I can swap some parts out and make the build small-form-factor.
You should look at various PC cases and find one you like. Then somebody here can pick out components based on the case you have in mind. The one in the part list linked is a great case, but as I have stated, it is quite large.
I’d recommend a Core i7 for video editing(hyperthreading makes a noticeable difference when editing video). I also would recommend 16gb of ram because you are editing video, if you were just gaming, I’d stick with 8gb.
Windows 7 or windows 8 doesn’t really matter(Win 7 was slightly cheaper. You can use either, just make sure to get 64 bit). It is entirely your preference.
As the graphics card is mostly going to be used for gaming, this is basically the “extra” you’re spending on play vs. building a full-time work machine. In this budget, I personally would get a Nvidia GTX 770 with 4gb of VRAM, but I would also consider a Radeon R9 290 as an alternative. It will perform very similar to the 770 in most applications(Nvidia works better than AMD in some games, and vice-versa), so it’s mostly preference. I prefer Nvidia over AMD so the 770 is the card I chose for this build, but** the GFX card choice is entirely up to you. **
Hard drives aren’t much of a big deal, so you could swap them out for ones you like better(I’d do research before picking out solid state drives, they’ve gotten a lot better in the past few years). You could get a smaller SSD and/or HDD to save money as well. PC cases also aren’t much of a big deal(but in a $1500 build, I would try to get a quality case that you like).
Power supplies aren’t a huge deal, but you don’t want a bad PSU(I’ve seen a few disasters due to malfunction, it isn’t pretty). Modular power supplies will cost a bit extra, but they come with the benefit of easier cable management(making installation simpler). I would strongly recommend one it makes a huge difference.
If somebody else wants to post their idea for a build or criticize this one, please do not hesitate. **More options are never a bad thing. **
Best thing in buying a new PC is make the following list
What are your needs?
What are your wants?
What is your Budget?
Yes a want and need is quite different. Needs are things you must have for life or work. Wants are extra, luxuries.
You want/needs are video editing/HTPC/Gaming
Is this going to be at a desk, a home theater/entertainment center or where else?
As ExtremeYoshiFan said if you are going more the HTPC for home entertainment center in a living room or family room you might want to look into small form-factor.
Like a Mini or micro atx/ itx case.
For big time video editing 16 gb of ram is great, you only need 8 for gaming.
Your Budget is $1500 to $2000
That is alot of room to play around with, specially if you shop smart.
Either way do some research, what works for one person does not fit everyone, specially if you are custom building a PC.
For Power Supplies, I look for those with 80 plus certification.
For a build I start with are you going AMD or Intel (to be its a coke vs Pepsi argument)
Then the formfactor, Mid size ATX, small ATX, Mini ect…
I would throw in a Bluray drive and a internal card reader, but that is me
I need some help with my computer if anyone has a minute.
My fan was making a good amount of noise so i opened up the case and found that the video card fan was the culprit.
I googled some info and the general consensus was to open it up and lubricate the bearings. Well in the process I broke the fan.
How big of a deal is this? Is it bad to use my comp without that fan running? The two others inside are still working.
Will this replacement fan work with an AMD Radeon HD 7770? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835119083
Thanks for any help.
Here’s an odd question that’d been bugging me for a bit, and while there are many other computer forums out there, this question relates to SF, so it’s definitely appropriate here.
I’m definitely a console-player more than anything, but I was wondering if a dual core Intel Core i5 1600MHz with 8GB RAM running an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400 would be able to run SF4 and SFxT?
Different brands may use different fans… which brand card is it?
Your video card is the hottest thing in a computer when under load… I would NOT use it until you get a new fan for it. If you have onboard video then you can pull the video card and use it until then.
Video Editing is #1 priority. Gaming & HTPC is not really a priority at all but would be nice to be able to play any game i want even though i only play simulatation/strategy type games like Civilization. As for the HTPC im probably better off getting another PC setup to hook to my home theater. So i guess lets just go with video editing & gaming which allows streaming. Ill be using this on a desk. I’ll probably want 2 monitor setup(not part of the budget). I would like a full size casing w/ some bling to it.
This casing looks quite nice for me but not sure if that’s outdated or not.
My friend bought that case and I bought the cheaper sister (the little one in the video) (story of my life)
CM makes fine cases, but a bunch of fans won’t be quiet
I think that should run both games fine, you might have to take them to mid level setting instead of high
For gaming I usually recommend a dedicated graphics card
What ED said, there alot of variations on the AMD Radeon HD 7770 video card. AMD almost none of their own video cards (they do make whats called a reference card), they instead license off the production to secondary manufacturers. AMD makes a Chip set the secondary manufactures use for the actual card. Like if you scroll up you see the insides of my PC, I have a XFX Ghost Black series Radeion HD 7770 graphics card. My Graphics card would be different than a MSI made HD 7770 or a Gigabyte HD 7770 or a Power Color HD 7770
Who is the manufacturer of the card?
Also I wouldn’t use that fan, as Video card fans are often made to set in a particular heatsink.
I think you are on the right track here.
That particular case would be great for a Video Editing or Gaming PC
somebody mentioned the R9 series… I am looking at that really hard now… the price to performance is amazing… I will wait a while and see what the reviews come up with but the initial impressions are very positive!
I need to upgrade. as much as I love the 570GTX I am running, that combined with my aging CPU (QX6850) things have gotten to the point where I have to tweak graphic settings and I dont like that LOL… COD Ghosts runs really well but BF4 looks like the console version. The proc is holding back an already eclipsed card and I just need to bite the bullet and bring her up to speed. This will be my 4th rebuild on this same case (silverstone TJ10).
When I say “tweak” I mean I am not getting 120 Fps on at least high. With a 120Hz monitor, you need to match/exceed it to really see the difference. I cant go back to 60, not after being spoiled for so long.
So I will finally retire my $1000 processor after 7 years… It will not go unused, my son wants a gaming rig and it will be transplanted to live on.
