The Official PC/Computer Thread

Building it yourself, around 1500ish give or take. Built, around 2k depending on the builder.

Cool. Thanks a lot.

I bought windows 8 with my gmail account, logged in and migrated data from windows 7 with my gmail account. Problem is I forgot my XBOX LIVE gamertag and windows live contacts are on my old hotmail address. Is there anyway I can switch the windows live id’s (or primary email) associated with the admin account on my PC so that I can keep my files, apps, settings, etc?

PS: willing to sacrifice apps and settings if need be but not files. I really wanna be able to use the smart glass app and Xbox friends lists.

Thanks for considering my inquiry!!

I’m thinking about rebuilding my server(currently a repurposed Dell midtower) because I was offered a Bitfenix Prodigy for $70. Should I go for it? I’d need all new hardware and I have to take that into account, but I’m really considering buying the case and getting a small amount of stuff at a time until it’s ready to go.

Finally undertook a few projects I had sitting around. First, my IT Guy forced an older HP Proliant Win2003 server on me, as our company has gone to a much more robust Xeon based server running VMware. I took the holiday break to wipe it clean and do a fresh install. Now I have to figure out how to configure it for the house. Thing is, the sever is overkill for what I really need. From a size perspective, it’s ridiculous. And while M$ has stopped supporting WHS11, it more than fills the need of a file/media server with much less hassle. I will brush up on my server know how and see if it’s worth configuring this beast. If not, I can sell it to fund my next project…

…which is finally starting my PC build. I figured the baseline setup in Maximum PC would be the blueprint, and plan on just getting a piece or 2 every payday (more if these end of year bonus comes through). I pulled the trigger on the R4 window case; will probably get the CPU (i5 3570k) and mobo (ASRock Z77 Extreme4) next go round. Still need to pick a psu though

If you’re building a new PC anyway, may as well grab a modular PSU. I’d recommend the Corsair AX750 After using one in few friends’ builds I would never use anything else. They’re a bit pricy, but they are really easy to work with and are very popular. Other modular supplies are fine, but these are some of the most popular. But, anything from Seasonic or Silverstone would also do, so you may want to shop around, and possibly find one that may better fit your build(in terms of theme or color)

I did some more checking and as of yesterday I was leaning toward the Seasonic X650, which looks to be on sale right about now. I may pull the trigger on that tomorrow and have that waiting for the rest of the parts. I was almost tempted by a OCZ ZT series, but it looks pretty hard to beat the deal on that Seasonic. That clears one major hurdle. Some of the other parts will probably end up changing once I see what deals are available when I’m ready to buy. I’m getting at least a 120GB SSD, and my eye has been on the Samsung 840 series, but if a decent 256GB drive from another maker isn’t that much difference in price I’ll go that way. HDD is also going to depend on what the prices look like in the end. Since most of my media is already on my home server, I really don’t need a massive amount of storage in the R4. I figure at least a TB, and get another 2TB for the server (if I need it). I can get 16GB of decent memory for under $100, so why not. That leaves an optical drive (not sure if I want a Blu-Ray in there or not) a GPU, which nay be some form of GFX660, as the passively cooled Sapphire 7770 doesn’t look like it was ever released, and a CPU cooler

Ok , here I go with my 4.4 years old computer (Still working strong)

Mobo: Asus P5Q Deluxe.
Processor: Intel Quad 9550.
Cooler: Zalman cnps9700
RAM: 2x4gb Corsair @1333 hz
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 Toxic Edition OC VaporX 2Gb Gddr5
HHD: 2x Western Digital Cabiar Green 500Gb
Case: Thermaltake Armor + VH6000BWS
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 1000w
OS: Win jista (vista)

You can upgrade to Win 8 for $15 if you don’t mind telling a computer a white lie.

Hear ye, hear ye, all proof readers and fact checkers! Skim this will ya? Let me know what you think it needs.

My prices were all sorts of messed up. Turns out I had built my forms wrong and I have since corrected them. And its not a bad idea to keep a hold of the 560 Ti, actually… I may have to follow your advice on this one.

I appreciate it. (:

I got silver thermal paste, the brand that came with my Cooler Master Hyper 212 Heatsink, in my LGA 1155 Socket (I put way too much on my heatsink, first time building and if my MoBo is ruined I’m gonna cry) I got a lot of it cleaned up using 91% isopropyl and a soft toothbrush. Where I am now, I’ve got no bent pins, all of the paste is off of the pins but there is still some on the bottom of the socket. How much paste down there is too much? Any? Should I keep going at the risk of bending a pin or two? How bad of a fuck up is this?

Soooo… I’m at the classic Blue Oval vs. Bowtie problem: AMD vs Nvidia. I’ve decided spending more than $250 for a GPU would be pointless for the PC games I play, which currently stands at zero (but realistically will change once I get my Steam on). After doing some checking, I’ve narrowed my choices to a EVGA 660 Sig 2 FTW or a XFX Double D 7870 Ghz

Not really sure which way to go on either just yet. I could stretch for the Black Efition of the XFX or the SC version of the EVGA if it were really worth it (and with the SC having #GB onboard that’s probably what the smart thing would be to get). That would take care of the last major parts decision in the build. Suggestioins?

AMD vs Nvidia is always a choice that isn’t something that I can make for you. You’ll be happy with either card, but you’ll probably want to check benchmarks and reviews that involve the games you want to play. Some games are better optimized for Nvidia vs AMD and vice-versa. Either card should perform similarly in that manner.

Also, if you want to use PhysX in games, get the Nvidia, as in many instances CPU based physX just isn’t fast enough.

CPU: Intel i7-920
RAM: 12gb @ 1333
Mobo + CPU Cooler: Both custom OEM’s from about 5 years ago. Note: The mobo is m-atx
GPU: MSI AMD Radeon 6950
Chasis: Corsair 800D
PSU: Corsair HX 750
HHD: 1tb WD Black, 1 tb Hitachi, 500gb WD green
OS: Windows 8
Misc: Microsoft Lifecam Cinema + Blue Eyeball Webcam/Mic
Bose 501 Series IV amped by a Yamaha HTR-5650

Pretty much what I figured. That will probably be the last part I buy, so I’ll chew on that for a while. The sad thing is, I’d probably be absolutely fine with a GTX 650, so splitting hairs over benchmarks on these cards is silly. But, it’s a disease I got from my father to research the ever-loving-hell out of anything I buy, so…

I did pick up the cooler and memory. Somehow I think 16GB is overkill, and I spent a little more than I wanted on it (thought the Vengance DDR3s were on sale, and thought I only had an 8GB kit) but I was going to buy memory anyway, and was too lazy to walk back and get the 8GB pack. So…

OK, here’s the list:

Case: Fractal Design R4 Pearl Black, window
CPU: i5 3570K
Mobo: AsRock Z77 Extreme4
PSU: SeaSonic X650 80 Plus Gold
Cooler: Corsair H80i
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB
SSD: Samsung 840 Series 250GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB
ODD: LG 14x Blu-ray burner

GPU: XFX Radeon HD 7870 OR EVGA GTX 660 Sig 2 FTW (undecided at the moment)

I figure this rig should last for a few years and should be able to handle whatever I need to throw at it. I hope to pick up the majority of the parts today and build it tonight or tomorrow, depending.

I’m ready for something to make me want to build a new rig. It’s been so long since I’ve had that feeling…

Phase 1 - complete

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-OMvQviBED9Y/UPtC9KRgy9I/AAAAAAAAEKg/Rp_JrU_31y8/s901/13+-+2

It is quiet. It is fast, It looks like a ti gray monolith. As my personal build, I can’t be happier. Will post insides once I get the GPU

Just got my 7870 XT (cut down 7950, believe it or not) and some LED sleeving. Time for phase 2…

hi guys, I’m planning to buy a new gaming pc and need some advice

I want high end but nothing too crazy

was thinking of an intel core i5-3750k and geforce gtx 680 2gb

some questions:

is the core i7 really not that great for games? I wouldnt mind spending a little more on the cpu but obviously only if its worth it. is it likely that in 1-2 years games will profit more from the core i7?

the amd 7970 ghz is slightly faster in many games benchmarks while costing a little less. would the amd gpu work flawlessly with the intel cpu though our is intel + nvidia a better combination?

how much difference is there between a 2gb & 4gb gtx 680 for gaming? worth the price?
