The Official PC/Computer Thread

Has anyone had any luck getting rid of a google redirect virus? Everytime I run Malewarebytes it freezes just as the threats are detected, even if I’m running it in Safe Mode. This is really frustrating.

Run Malwarebytes through a live CD. I believe it is packaged in Hiren’s Boot CD. I would link it, but I’m not sure if linking to it would be against the rules. It’s easy enough to find though.

Talk to me about water coolers. After the last few months of pondering and planning, I need to pull the trigger on this new build. The fan noise in my current setup is killing me (can’t remember the case, but the biggest fan I can fit in the rear is 92mm, and the Zalman quiet cooler is anything but quiet).

With the windowed R4 on deck, I already know I’ve got to make some heat to silence decisions. I figured rather than hanging a huge air cooler on the cpu, an AIO water cooled setup may be the ticket, as it won’t simply rely on moving around the somewhat hotter air inside the R4 case (relative to a standard, non sound dampening filled case which will block some airflow). The Water 2.0 Pro has caught my eye, but I’m not sure how much better/worse it woudl be than, say, a Corsair H80 or an Antec offering. Anybody dabble with these? And no, I don’t want a custom setup. Too much setup and headache that I don’t need (not that I can really say I NEED an AIO setup either, but still…)

If you want an All in One, then by all means purchase one. It will perform much better than the majority of air coolers(but the best of the best will be better). I put one on a Phenom II x4 955 BE build I did for my brother and it’s been hassle free so far, but I’ve heard of these coolers leaking, so it’s up to you.

If you are going for silence, you are going to want to purchase a different set of fans, as the stock ones are pretty loud(at least on the one I used). It’s mostly up to preference, but you need to decide if it is worth paying extra to get quieter fans that will have roughly the same temps.

I’m not averse to buying a few 120mm fans if need be. Come to think about it, I probably have 2 sitting at the house now (not that they can be used with my current setup), but I doubt they match, so it doesn’t do much good for the time being.

If you are going to be purchasing new fans I’ve heard excellent things about the Gentle Typhoon fans. I sadly haven’t used a set for long enough to personally vouch for their performance, but I put them in a friend’s rig to replace his other case fans and he was quite happy with them(and his PC is directly next to him on his desk).

I’m able to turn my NZXT fans down far enough that they don’t bother me in my phantom when I’m wearing headphones, so it’s not an issue for me, but if I was to purchase new case fans the typhoons would definitely be the ones I choose.

Got a new case for my computer… A bit big though.

i’m using a corsair h100 with cougar vortex fans. idle at 20-25c. after 1hr on prime temps around 67c. normal load temps are around 35c. pretty good if you ask me. i used the stock shin etsu thermal grease, i usually use IC diamond. the case is a corsair 650d with fans set in a positive pressure config. ive used noctua d14 in the past with about the same results.

i dont think you can go wrong with these. allows for a cleaner setup and don’t have to worry about heatsink clearing ram (noctua). i’m thinking about picking up h60/80 to cool a video card.

I was just having a conversation about gaming mice in the tech-talk general thread. I love the Logitech g500, and someone else was talking about the g400. They are both great mice that you can get for $40 and under (bestbuy).

There are some great performing mice for less than $50, the g400 being one of those. I personally am really hard on mice, and one year went through two high-dollar Razer mice in the span of about 3 months. I personally like my Xai from Steelseries. I have had it nearly two years.

I’m new at this. I’m trying to put together a PC(not manually, some else will assemble and ship) for gaming and video capture/editing. I’m looking for quality under $2k. Is this good?

Intel Core i5-3550 3.3GHz(3.7GHz Turbo)
Mushkin DDR3 1600 16GB(2x 8GB)
NVIDIA GTX 560 Ti 1GB(EVGA)
Onboard sound
Crucial M4 128GB (SSD SATA III)
1TB Western Digital Cavier Black (7200 RPM, SATA III)

RIP OFF. Unless that $2K you plan on spending includes a monitor, mouse and a hand job, then don’t buy.

Based on part price alone, that should not top more than $800.

The price total was given by clockworkit.net, who would be assembling it all and shipping it to me. Is the only cheaper option putting the PC together myself?

From what I have seen, clockworkit.com knows how to setup his rigs. The style he has can be called an art form. However from the parts listed, you are getting a last years product for the this years price. Of anything, the dude should at least make the 560ti the 448 core model. I don’t want to take away a customer from him, but any of those custom gaming PC sites will build the same thing for around $1200.

Of anything, I would encourage you to build your own PC. Not often do people get to say yeah they built something of their own and at a fraction of the cost.

/edit: Rabbit model drops it to $1600 which is a bit more reasonable. Still a huge fan of people going out and building it on their own.

Man, I thought my itx board was done for when a tiny piece of tissue paper got stuck between the socket pins. it didn’t boot…good thing I was able to borrow a mechanical pencil and suck that tiny piece with my mouth. Build is almost done after putting it off for more than a month!

very happy with the build overall, built in June of this year and mainly used to dual-box EVE online and any other gaming needs on max settings.

If you were to build it yourself or purchase it from Clockwork?

Just trying to get an estimate. I’ve never built a computer or even really used window PC for that matter. Always been a mac user, but have been thinking of going to the dark side, lol. So I was just trying to get an estimate on what a rig like that would cost either built or building it myself. Thanks.
