The Official NHL 2009-2010 Thread. Playoff Edition

Oh trust, I was hella surprised myself. 7 Goals on Luongo. I mean really?

We play Davos in an exhibition right now, and then we play the Zurich Lions tomorrow

LETS GET IT!!!

Crazy how passionate they are. Singing like its a Soccer match.

in Eastern Europe, its exactly like that. Also, Davos is the Reigining NLA Champion. (If it means anything, Huubel is one of the higher tier goalies in Europe. Even in NHL 10, where Euro teams get shitted on, Davos manages to get a 93 in Goaltending). I should be a good game. Also, has anyone been overseas to a Hockey game (or, for that matter, one here in North America?)

3-0 Hawks so far after the first period. The goalie Huubel made a couple nice saves. Its that their position players are getting shitted on.

Florida lost to the Axes (Tampere - SM-Liiga) in a shootout, 2-3. Other Euro games coming up -
St. Louis/Linkoping HC, Chicago/Zurich, Florida/Helsinki Jokers, and Detroit/Farjestads.

Florida becomes first NHL team to lose to a European team. The record is now 16-0-1.

Tampere finished something like 13 out of 14 teams in the SM-liiga last year

lol florida
why do they still have a team?

when are you counting from? if you mean this year, I didnt know they had played that many games beforehand.
and yes, thats right, Axes Finished above SaiPa, unfortnately, there’s no Relegation/promotion in SM-Liiga.

Glanced over it on HF boards

huh, I’ll look later, because if that was all-time against europe, we all know thats HORRIBLY incorrect (CSKA Moscow beat the mess out of everyone they played in the 70s except Philly, where they refused to play the rest of the game after they got their asses physically torn, they only finished because they were told they wouldnt get paid if they didnt.)

EDIT-- the NHL is 11-28-2 (http://slapshot.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/01/european-champion-vs-nhl-the-all-time-records)

Double edit – http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Dugout/4128/01NHLvs.html , more friendlies, so the above is probably incorrect, I dont feel like counting.

We’ll be better than Edmonton this year though.

Carolina won a cup
Tampa won a cup

doesn’t mean they should still have teams

why, because they arent in traditional territory?

no
because people don’t care about hockey there
I guess the above teams did gain some fans after they won

so I’ll say phoenix, Columbus, Atlanta, florida, and unfortunately jersey which nobody wants to watch anymore for some reason

bring a team to a place where people want to watch hockey
hell another team in Minnesota would even be nice

Canada needs more teams imo.

A trip to Gamestop convinced me to make my first post in the thread.

Anyone own/play NHL 2K10? Impressions so far?

No. If a city, traditional or not, can support a team then they deserve one. If a team is in a city where they are losing money on a consistent basis over a period of years then no they should not have a team.

Phoenix sure as hell has proven they don’t want a hockey team. 70 million over the last three years? And they want to keep the team there. Thats good business for you.

Profit sharing or not, after a while the owners are going to get tired of the same markets losing money. At a certain point contraction/relocation makes way more sense then leaving a team in a shitty market. Of course relocation is always the preferred choice of the two… But are there really 30 cities that can support a hockey team?

I wish the answer was yes. It just isn’t though…I mean at the end of the day the league makes money…so if the owners are happy then this is all moot anyway.

If the league shit canned the four teams that have lost the most money over the last five seasons I would be thrilled.

Most likely:

Florida
Islanders
Carolina
Phoenix

A few years back I wrote a paper on the economic status of the NHL. Contraction was my answer then too. Except then I think I offered six teams up.

bettman is a bitch and just wont let ballsilie take a team to hamilton because im sure he he would get shit from leafs shareholders that will have another team near their “territory”

buncha bullshit, if a city is willing to support a team and give it a good home, DO IT
dont fucken let is suffer like a dying old man on life support

Contraction is a long shot. MLB tried that several years ago with the Twins and Expos, and the Twins took it to court and prevented the league from doing it. Same could happen between the NHL and teams / cities if they attempt it.

And Phoenix fucked up big time by not making the Suns’ arena dual-purpose like all the other arenas shared between NBA and NHL teams. Coyotes weren’t doing badly until they put their arena way outside the city in Glendale. It’s one thing for the Cardinals to play there 8 times a year, another to have the Coyotes there 41 times and asking people in Phoenix to make that travel that many times. Real stupid idea.

As for putting a team in the Leafs’ territory, do it. If it helps the team and league, just do it. MLB had no problem moving the Expos to Washington even though the Orioles bitched about DC being their territory. They got outvoted by the owners 29-1 in favor of the move. Though the Natinals still suck.

not Carolina and Columbus, there’s no good reason. Nashville, Phoenix, Atlanta and Florida should contracted, relocate the Isles and maybe Nashville, if this has to happen. I dont really want to see any of those teams go, except the yotes, I never liked that idea. Carolina and CBus dont have any probs financially, I can vouch personally for that, the games I go to are packed in CBus, and were pretty good in Carolina (this is what I heard from a relative in Raleigh, the RBC center regularly hits ~13k).

this is what i look at

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/attendance?sort=home_pct&year=2009

why did anyone think that elvis’ family wanted to watch hockey…
seriously… peter pocklington killed hockey

huh. Ottawa, a team that used to have some financial troubles earlier this decade, is stocked at capacity? Interesting.

Oh, and I was thinking, if a NHL team moved to Hamilton, you think it would cannabilize the AHL’s Hamilton Team? in that case, I could see Montreal opposing the move regardless into that territory.
