The Official Japan Thread 2.0 "Nani?"

Nah, I’m more like Holly from Red Dwarf.

even if this were true, you would still need an epic purple divining rod to find even a single black woman, let alone an attractive one. if i ever see one i may have to ask her if she got lost on her way to africa.

whoa you got prem and an avatar! its simply magical…

I saw quite a few black chicks in roppongi, usually at the ATM with some 45 year old business man idiot thinking she likes him

Yeah it was about time I put up an av. Props are due for nikkos010 for hooking me up with the premium! I don’t help out my SRK brothers for reward but to get thanked like that is damn appreciated so big respect to nikkos010!! I’ll leave it to him to decide if he wants to share any details of the situation but basically it looks like there might still be a chance for him to come here if we can get him a special landing permission but that and the visa are two different things so I can only help to up to a point. It COULD be possible. Immigration here is really on a case-by-case basis. Lots to consider.

Small token of the immense gratitude I have. You didn’t have to offer help, and even then you’ve gone above and beyond in acting as translator/interpreter. I can’t say I have a lot of hope at this point, but there is a possible option in getting to Japan for a visit and another option for holding the school legally responsible for their hand in this mess.

One thing I miss from America, scary to think about it.

… sweet American legal justice

Feb5 Gods Garden 3 at Asagaya LoftA Anyone going?

Yosuke, you said GG3 is only Tekken this time right? Are there going to be any other tournaments? If its Tekken only, seeing as how I don’t play Tekken at all Ill have to sit this one out.

This question might not get a reply, but does anybody know about self-sponsored visas or the feasibility of them?

I can’t stress enough that Japanese immigration is on a case-by-case basis. Self-sponsoring is possible. However it’s not really a “self-sponsored visa”, it’s actually a self-sponsored extension of your current visa. Basically, people can’t come here on a self-sponsored visa but they can extend a work visa sponsoring themselves rather than being sponsored by a company. Sounds great right? The catch is that this is something that Japanese Immigration doesn’t like to advertise and some clerks will flat out tell you that there is no such thing. Talk to a different clerk in this case.

Again these are on a case-by-case basis but what seems to be common requirements are:

  • Taishoku shomeisho from your job that last sponsored you.
  • Certificate of Employment from your current job
  • Payslips for the past year
  • Tax forms for the past year
  • Invoices for anything that you are getting income from
  • Your passport and ARC
    • A photocopy of your contract(s).
  • Payment stamps (as with any visa extension)

This is what I personally expect you will need in addition to the above:

  • Proof you can take care of yourself without being a burden on Japan.
  • No late payments on taxes, anything gov’t related.
  • No criminal record.
  • Ability to live in Japan - basic Japanese skill, secure income, etc.
(this can mean a good regular income or to be financed by your parents or something)
  • Have shown good conduct during your stay in Japan.

You go for an ?Application for Extension of Period of Stay?. The hardest part is getting it the first time. It’s easy to extend once you have it as long as you don’t become homeless.

Immigration takes into account the reputation of the job(s) you are working at and the amount of money you earn but at the end of the day, immigration here is all about playing the game, make the immigration officer’s life super easy by having everything ready, bring more than you need. All kinds of documents you can think of that will be useful. Be super-polite, stroke their ego a bit. Don’t argue anything, even if you’re right just apologize and pretend that you’re the fuck up. Basically just show some Japanese giri and tatemae.

Hope that helps!

I think GG3 is Tekken only

hi, hope i dont piss anyone off by asking the following, but here goes.

Im looking to plan a trip for myself and my brother to visit japan, we dont have a specific location in mind, but thats cuz we know nothing about japan.
We are both Fighting game (and video game) fans to the core, so the majority of our time we would like to spend in different arcades, or preferably with a big ssf4 scene.
we are some what interested in tourism bs , but its not that important.

so my question is where would be a good centeral location in japan to stay and play at, what citys/and cheap hotels would u recommend
we stay in.
we would like to go for 2 weeks, so a week in 1 city and a week in the other (but we wouldnt mind staying put if the loctaion is just right)

rapid fire Qs:

would a group deal be cheaper (doubtful since most peeps bail)

what are some cheap hotels , you know like the holiday inns of japan, or is holiday in international?

whats a good (cheap) time of year to visit? summer, spring, winter, fall.

end

ps: im in the pre-planning stages of this, if we do this, it wouldnt be till late this year, or sometime next, but i wanna be as informed as possible before i start making any real decisions

pps: sorry for all the spelling errors n what not, work comps suck so no spell check x_x

Thanks for all the advice. So that’s paperwork you would take to the local immigration bureau, correct?
Also, I’m pretty sure that my taxes are probably not in order because of odd periods of unemployment and not really understanding how to pay national taxes. Would anyone know any tips and tricks on paying taxes or how’s it’s done.

Yeah that’s right.

As for taxes, it’s basically a self-assessment system combined with a withholding tax system (taxes are taken out of your salary and submitted by your employer). Because of this most people Japan don’t need to file a tax return. You only need to file a tax return if…:

a) …you leave Japan before the end of the tax year
b) …if your work does not withhold taxes (most cases this is an employer outside Japan/shady eikaiwa)
c) … if you have more than one job
d) …if your annual income is more than 20,000,000 yen
e) …if any side income you have is more than 200,000 yen

If none of this applies to you, you do not need to file a tax return. What happens is you will have your national income taxes withheld from your pay by your employer, and an eventual adjustment is made with the year’s final salary. Prefectural and municipal payments have to be paid separately by you and you will get a pack of cards in the mail from city hall. You can either pay it all off at once or use the cards to pay in installments (the due dates are printed on the cards, ie. [FONT=arial]June, August 1, October, January.) Easiest way is to take them to your local convenience store and give the guy the card and cash and he/she will stamp and return the stub and give you a receipt. Easy!

If you have to file a tax return, ie. if you are self-employed or your shady eikaiwa fucked you, you need to do so at the local tax office (zeimusho) between February 16 and March 15 of the following year. So in this case your tax return for 2010 has to be filed between February 16 and March 15, 2011.

If not withheld by your employer, national income taxes are due in full by March 15 of the following year (mid April if you pay by automatic bank transfer), with two prepayments paid in July and November of the running tax year. Prepayments are calculated based on the previous year’s income, so don’t worry that you didn’t pay them on your first year in Japan (as your previous year’s income in Japan was zero)

tl;dr - if you work for a legit company national tax is filed for you. if you need to pay city and prefecture tax you get cards in the mail to pay at the 7-Eleven down the street. If you have to file a tax return for some reason, you go to the local tax office between Feb. 16 - Mar. 15.

i would say this in general… but it all depends on how much money you have saved up for this.

  1. tokyo is where you want to be
  2. get a place near roppongi/shinjuku/shibuya if you plan on doing other things than games… (no pun intended)
  3. for cheapest location + variety of games + comp + easy access to clubs + easy transportation/accessibility to other areas: shibuya kaikan (i am sure everyone know what i am talking about when i say shibuya… sucks that one gaspanic is gone, fugs up the whole circle route)
  4. food should be from the conbini

you and your bro can do this for 2 weeks with 6 grand or so (incl plane and housing)

wicked, thnx man, yeah around 6gs is what we figured, cool cool. thank you very very very much

oooh also,

good comps for ssf4:ae and mvc3, where can i find? will that be a problem, or is everyone just gdlk in that country? (is that racist?)

also when is low season, when would be the cheapest time to go, 2nd pt. what would be the ideal time to go>

isnt mvc3 console only? im pretty sure it aint even out yet.

its already out in japan… people just dont upload any info on the net because they know what capcom is capable of doing (re: oni and evil ryu)

lol

alright just kinda doing a fact finding misson here. I thought i’d ask here cause people might have some helpful information unlike what i get from other people.

I’ve been traveling around for the last couple years, right now i’m in australia just trying to build up my funds again. So my work contract is ending in may, so i figure since it’s winter here in may i should head over to japan to the summer, since i’ve always wanted to go there.

Now the problem is, i’ve done all this work saving up a bunch of cash, i don’t want to blow through it all and be back to square one again. So im just trying to get some ideas here of what kind of options i have. Is there any kind of work i could get, other than english teacher? Cause that’s pretty much the only thing people will tell you (“oh…teach english?!”) Unless i can get a work visa…which i doubt i can cause im not in canada, i guess i’d be looking for something that pays cash. My friend was there and just did private english lessons by himself, which i could do. But i’m just looking for some other thoughts on what i could do, or what kinda visas i can get etc etc.

thanks for the help!
