It’s not really popular anymore. What you see in Tokyo that seems like enjo kosai is more often than not a scam. Basically the girl will say let’s go to a love hotel. You get to the hotel, she’ll say “take a shower, I want you to be clean. I’ll get ready for you.” or something similar. While you are showering, she takes your clothes and money and gives it to her boyfriend/scam partner/yakuza. Yes, you could say, join me in the shower etc. but they have counters for that etc. etc. back and forth. It’s just more hassle than it’s worth when you have shit like fuzoku and the like.

Because fuzoku is much more “reliable” than enjo kosai, people don’t really bother with it anymore. You might get something like this in rural areas but it’s the exception rather than the rule. It’s like anything good, it’s nice for a while then people find ways to scam it and then no one reeeaaaalllly does it anymore except the people that are slow to catch on.
As for the umbrellas during a heatwave: Pale skin > Farmer tan for the ladies. Not so many ganguro girls these days.
When that type of gaijin you described see you on the street, they don’t like the possibility of not being the centre of attention. They think that everyone is intrigued by them and think they are “sugoi”. These are usually the ones that have been here for a couple of years and think they’re the shit, because they get Japanese praising them on their chopstick handling skills and because their friends back home act jealous because they keep up the stereotypes of Japan to their friends - and usually can’t speak Japanese and/or have shit pronunciation (and are douchebags).
(side note: Japanese is the easiest fucking language to pronounce. a is ALWAYS ah, i is ALWAYS ee, u is ALWAYS ooh, e is ALWAYS eh, o is ALWAYS oh - so Kobe is “kohbeh” not “cobee”.)
Gaijin that give you the “look” are usually bitches that want to be the Alpha Male but could never actually man up to take that title and are usually absolute nobodys back home. Gaijin that are cool are either tourists just having a good time or actual genuinely cool people that have decided to make a go of it in Japan.

If the yakiniku is on Monday it should be cool but every year they had a foreigners farewell/thank you for playing party with some of the top players like 2 years ago it was at Sam & Dave. I couldnt go last year. but if they do it again it will most likely be on monday and that might conflict with that. Either way ill be around the whole SBO weekend till monday night and I gotta head back to Gunma at like 9 pm.
