The Official Gamecenter Thread (San Mateo)

Hey all,

We have now been open for a bit, so I figure we no longer qualify as “new.” As such, this will function now as an informational thread. Most all information can be found on our website:

www.gamecenterarcade.com

and most of our current events and news can be found on our Facebook page:

We are located at :

47 South B Street
San Mateo, CA 94402

We are open Wed-Sun 3pm to 12am (depending on demand, we might open earlier on Saturday, close a little earlier Sunday)

It’s right next door to the San Mateo Caltrain station. There’s parking across the street in a multi-story structure and all the parking is free after 6 and all Sunday. There’s O’Neil’s Pub right across the street and more places to eat than you could imagine (if you need any suggestions, just ask  ).

We have 3 “sections” so to speak. The main game floor has regular charge-per-credit games that are running on the latest and greatest card reader system. A $2 deposit is required to get a card, and will be returned to you in full when you return a working card. The games are priced as follows:

SSF4 AE - 100 points
Gundam vs Gundam NEXT - 100 points
EspGaluda - 25 points (Galuda 2 available on request)
Dungeons and Dragons Tower of Doom - 10 points
Street Fighter 3 Third Strike - 25 points
Ikaruga - 25 points
Virtua cop 3 - 50 points
All Neo-Geo games - 25 points

Garou MOTW
KOF 98
KOF 2002
Real Bout Fatal Fury Special
Rage of the Dragons
The Last Blade 2
Samurai Shodown 4
Puzzle Bobble
Magical Drop 3
Sengoku 3
Shock Troopers 2nd Squadron
Metal Slug 3
Blazing Star

The point purchase conversions are:

$1 - 100 points
$10 - 1200 points
$20 - 2500 points

The second “section” is also on the main game floor. I have 6 Namco Noir cabinets set up with PS3s inside them. Purchase of a wristband ($7) is required to play them, and the wristband is good for the entire day.

The third “section” is by the counter. We have 4 Toshiba low input lag 32" screens. These can be rented for $7 an hour. It’s a good alternative if the other games get a line backed up and you have a few friends who don’t want to wait. With a credit card as deposit, we can loan you a console to use if you would like. We have a small selection of games, but we’re always on the lookout for more. We have a couple of TE sticks as well that can be used if you’d like. Again, all of these are first come first serve, so if you want to absolutely ensure you can play what you want with the controllers you want, it’s best to bring along your own.

I have also obtained an Asian region 360 with a selection of import games (currently Death Smiles 2, DaiFukkatsu Black Label, Ketsui Black Label, and Virtual On Force). One of the Toshibas is mounted on a rotatable wall mount for easy tate action.

The last feature is the back lounge. It’s available for parties and group rentals. It’s outfitted with a comfy couch, a bar height table, and a 50" 3D capable plasma (with 2 pairs of glasses). If anyone is interested in booking it for an event, please ask me for details.

So that’s about it. If you have any more questions, please post a question here or PM me and I’ll be glad to help you.

Hope to see you all there!

UPDATE:

I’m pleased to announce our first tournament series, the Gundam vs Gundam tournament. It will take place starting this Saturday, July 9th at 7pm. The plan is to continue this every other week (so the next tournament will be the 23rd) Pilots will be randomly put into teams of two. If fewer than 16 teams are present, we will do a round robin tournament, otherwise, we will run a double elimination bracket, best 2 out of 3 matches. The grand final match will be 3 out of 5 matches. The cabinets will be turned to event mode, so no winner’s handicaps. The entry fee will be $5 and the venue fee will be purchase of a wristband (also good for play on the console cabs all day!) Prizes for the first 3 finishers, 70/20/10. After the tourney, we’ll keep it on freeplay for casuals for a few hours, so you can get your GvG fix in.

As any questions and issues arise, we will answer them and update our post as needed. I’ll see you all Saturday!

UPDATE UPDATE:

Given the success of this last tournament, it’s time to start our bi-weekly tourneys for Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition and Marvel vs Capcom 3! Our first in this series will be this coming Saturday the 16th, starting at 4. I don’t know how many people there will be, so I’m starting a bit early to make sure we have time. Venue fee will be a $7 wristband (also good for all day play on the console cab setups) and $5 to the tournament pot. Format will be standard best 2 out of 3 double elim. Both semi finals and finals (both for losers and winners) as well as the grand finals will be 3 out of 5. These will give you a last tournament to sharpen your claws before Evo.

You know I’ll be there day one.

Holy. Shit. Gundam vs Gundam? and is KOF 2k2 regular 2k2 or UM?

Also, I remember when you first brought this up. Congratulations on opening!

wow, sounds awesome. may have to make a trip there

Yes! GvG NEXT, 4 players, linked. Bring on the robit battles! Honestly, that’s probably my favorite game in the whole building. As for KOF 2k2, it’s the regular (MVS) version, so have fun doing those 2 frame Leona or Kim 100% combos.

Is this for real this time?

Wow Southtown Arcade and this place…lasdkfjklsdjfaklsd;fjkasfjaskfjlsjfasdfsfskljfsfd I can’t decide lol.

I was just thinking the same thing. Why decide? Just go with both, haha.

Oh, this is a sweet surprise! I was just thinking about your arcade recently when I was walking through downtown. Definitely gonna drop by often.

Congrats on the opening!

$1 for AE makes me sad

This sounds pretty badass. I’ll drop by for sure with a few friends this weekend. Congrats!

Get hype for Gundam .

Wow… I thought this was DEAD? I haven’t heard anything at all since the SBO Quals last year in San Mateo! Wow! This is really a surprise!!

Wow, I remember talk of this arcade when I first joined SRK a long while ago

Congrats on finally opening! I’ll have to come sometime and check it out.

Doh No CvS2, KoF13 or BB…

But its good to see this finally open out, and its closer to where I live too. I will def keep an eye out.

Imagine how sad I was paying for the board. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Abso-freaking-lutely

We have BBCS2 on the console setups, as well as Arcana Heart 3 for people who dig on gigantically complex systems.

I hope to see you all here soon!

-Myung

Sounds awesome! Hopefully I’ll get a chance to swing by soon, and possibly become a regular of sorts.

Stopped by and the place looks like a great start. Console cabs are dope, saw MvC3 / BBCS2 / Arcana 3 while I was there. Also, Gundam is probably the hypest game ever created. People need to get down there so we can have 2v2 matches ASAP.

Gundum and A.E. Cab volume needs to be turned a bit but great place so far… wait did i say Gundam… yea i guess it is that hype!

Yeah, I know the volume on the Gundam cabs is low, but the reason is that it’s actually 4 cabs running it, so if I have them all up, when that theme song gets going, that’s really just all you can hear in the entire damn arcade… and it gets even more annoying when it’s desynced.

Thanks for coming out and supporting us on our first day! We’re open today too, so I hope to see you all back. I got the vending machine up and running, so there are cold drinks for everyone.

I will try to get the Freedemonia crew down here soon to get some hype 2v2 Gundam battles. Oh yeah congrats on the opening.
