He was never in a mainline X-film.
His only appearance was the godawful first XOrigins Wolverine film played by Taylor Kitsch.
He had a small part and was kind of mediocre imo.
To address AlphaCharlie, yes he was popular in the 1990s TAS, but also the comics too.
Its really the comic writers from since 2000 or so that have not chosen to use the character that well and he has fallen into semi-obscurity.
While I have doubts about how good Tatum is for the role, you cant deny that he has “come a long way” in terms of acting since 2009 with crap like the first GIJOE film and Fighting. The jump street films and apparently his role in Foxcatcher are a lot better.
From what various interviews have written, he was the instigator of this film project by pitching it to Fox studios.
They had no interest in Gambit solo film ever.
Tatum has said that X-men TAS fostered a love of the character and because he grew up partly in Cajun areas.
apparently his production company got a film treatment from Chris Claremont himself (Gambit co creator and arguably the best X-writer of all time).
While this film has languished in development hell with directors coming and going, I believe the success of Deadpool and Logan combined wth Jackman retiring has made the studio bigwigs more agreeable to this project.
They dont know comics but they always bend over backwards to star power .
Hopefully, Fox can let them do their thang and minimize their micromanaging.
I think there a lot of older fans would love to see a romantic element with a new more accurate Rogue.
(allegedly Lea Seydoux has been cast as Belladonna- Remy’s wife, but I’m sure a sequel could plant the seed of a Rogue/Remy pairing)

You could argue that many comic movies are unnecessary but that doesn’t seem to stop Marvel from bringing us stuff like guardians and Ant-Man.

As Maxx says, Tatum is built like fuck, this is nearly on par with Rock being cast in Big Trouble cause normal everyday dudes dont inject steroids into their dicks and work up 12 hours everyday.
Plus Tatum has zero charisma, there is no way he can pull of Gambits superpower that isnt a superpower. Kitch wasnt all that bad compared to this asshole. Like just naw, id rather watch Connor fucking MacGregor as Gambit cause its pretty much gonna be the same result.

I own x-men TAS on dvd, most of the movies on bluray, and my comic collection from childhood is 50% x-men.

Gambit has lots of potential as a character but none of the writers after Claremont have a really good grasp of how to write him properly.
His ability alone makes him a walking battery of sorts and amplifies his fighting ability. Pretty dynamic character imo.

i could see it as a heist movie where he’s pulled back into thieves guild . but they keep it more mysterious for part 2 to explain that kinda history.
