The Official Custom Arcade Sticks Thread

you can use hot glue…you know.
after you are done soldering…just pour some hot glue with gluegun.
I dont have any problem soldering anything but hotglue helps !

When you first start soldering, you’ll have a hard time at first. When I first started, I just couldn’t get the damn solder to stay on the board or on the wire at the same time and shit, I even read the tutorials and everyone else’s guide. So I said fuck and went ahead with my “Solder-less” projects, and if you care to read the first few pages I talked about what pads didn’t need to be soldered and etc… One day I decided to pick up that soldering iron and mess around with soldering wires onto a cheap $5 PSX pad I purchased from Wal-Mart and I had little trouble. I guess it takes patience. Now, though I’m no expert, I’m a soldering whore! I’m working on a keyboard hack right now to use to play M.A.M.E. games on my pc (mainly Capcom fighters)
andway…
This is what I do, and have had no problems with the way I solder to get the pads I used to work on either systems:
First, I locate all my soldering points on the pcb, ground, up, down, triangle, x, y, z, etc… Then I have all my wires ready to solder. IMO, tinning the wires should be optional. I strip about 1/8 off th end or maybe about 2/8. 1/2 inch is a waste and would have a harder time securing the wire properly on the board so it will not fall off. Now, using rosin core solder (duh) using the soldering iron (duh) use a small dap on the first soldering point on the board (during this, have a wire you’re going to connect handy nearby to solder) then grab the wire you’re going to solder and apply some heat to the solder on the board to attach the wire onto it (did I lose you?) Don’t move the wire let the joint cool for a couple of seconds, then lift the wire a little to see it was attached properly. If it falls off, solder it back on, make sure it’s good on the board.

Barney style: melt a small dap of the rosin core onto the copper joint on the pcb. With the wire you’re going to solder on that point, melt the small joint you made to insert/attach that wire. DON’T MOVE THE WIRE ONCE YOU REMOVE THE SOLDERING IRON! You must let the joint cool for a few seconds so that the joint hardens (duh)

I hope this helps you out a little, sorry if you don’t quite understand my explanation of soldering, but this is MY method of soldering. I do however apply what I have read and learned from everyone elses site and soldering 101 tutorials.

Also, about soldering, Id like to stress the fact that YOU SHOULD NOT MOVE THE WIRE UNTIL THE JOINT HARDENS. If u do eventually the wire will rip off from the solder cake. Even if the wire is getting hot, dont remove it. Well u can remove it if u want, but ur gonna have to solder again. U need to be really quick when soldering so that the solder joint sets before the wire starts burning ur fingers. IMO, this is what turns off most people to soldering. Just keep on trying and eventually u will get the hang of it.

PICS !

oh I posted the arts for my cabinet cabinet elsewhere…forgot it goes here…

SNAAAKE, are u willing to sell any DC pads, already pre-made etc.? give me a price and we’ll negotiate.

i just wanted to know which DC controller would be the easiest to build a stick out of? If there are any pics of the soldering points and stuff like that, i’d really appreciate it if i could be directed to a link showing the info. Thanks in advance!

TEMPLATE NEEDED

Does anybody have the hole template for the joystick (happ) so that my drill holes for the stick and screws so that the holes for the screw and the main 1 1/8 hole are lined up and centered.

do you guys know where i can get a ps2 to dc converter?

I got one off eBay for $8.99, which works fine. Search for “Dreamcast Adapter.”
