The last pic I posted was of the front, but I think you might like this as well. I’ve got a foundry and I’ve been making SNK and Capcom logo’s to sell/give to my friends out of brass, bronze and Aluminum. If you don’t cut of the sprews & risers, they make a nice grip for the stick, or a great place to wrap a cord around.
I’m currently working on LB1st’s xbox mod tutorial, I got everything working except the x button and my problem is when i took it up last time i lost all the copper in the area im supposed to solder to… are there any other spots on that i can solder at? If not, I guess I could connect the L or R buttons instead…
Curious question.
From a legal stand point is it legal for somoene to sell a custom built arcade stick using another companies pcb controller?
Someone tells me that its illegal do to using another companies pcb being used etc, etc.
How would this work?
I know mas systems uses custom built PCBS but what is the law on it?
Seth or anyone that is a legal know it all, please help me out on this one.
is selling your PS2 or DC to a friend illegal? i would think not. i see it the same way with a Controller. they don’t give a fuck about what you do with it…as if they will find out anyway…what are they going to do, go through every custom stick in america to see if their pad is a skeleton? i would think not. why do people still burn games and DL roms?
Ok the ending of that just was totally off topic. I mostly want to know more from a legal stand point cause we were arguing about it for a few minutes and he made valid points about reverse engineering it etc.
My take was your not modifying the interior in any way but using the item as a key component etc, hes take was its using someones licensed product for resale etc. Long story.
Best example would be me taking PEPSI adding a lemon to it and selling my own drink. Wich pepsi could say is copyright infringement.
To essentially take someone’s controller and turn it into a joystick is not illegal. To purchase joypads and turn them into joysticks, then resell them as your own work, would need to be licensed by the joypad manufactures.
The idea with reverse engineering is that you figure out how the pad works and build your own. The difference is that you still have to build it yourself. You could still accomplish this by tapping into the leads, seeing what happens when you press a button, and constructing your own circuit to do the same thing (which is what everyone else probably does, or maybe the data is available from sony/ms/sega). Even tho it technically is the same, when it applies to bigger things it makes a difference… i.e. you can reverse engineer an xbox to make an xbox compatible machine, but you can’t mod an exsting xbox and call it your own.
Yeah, I’ve been looking into making my own custom stick for a while, but after weighing the costs, couldn’t I just get a MAS stick? I don’t know…the costs you put don’t even include shipping as well…
Are there any sites with a step-by-step process to making a stick? I’m really new to this and I would probably end up making my own if i found one…
are you serious?
It doesn’t seem to hard now that I really think about it, but I’m not good with the wiring and stuff so I thought there’d be a lot less chance of me messing up with a guide you know :o
It’s called “reading the thread.”
There are at least a dozen such sites (step-by-step) that have been linked to in this thread.
Just FYI.
I only looked through 1-5 and the last 3 pages
I’ll go through it all later :o thanks
honestly, anyone can make their own joystick. mine only took me 2 weeks(including shipping of parts) to build. And i didn’t even work on it everyday. All i did was read through each of these pages and found all the answers to the questions i had.
I made mine with plexiglass and all. Its for ps/ps2 and i bought a dc adpater off ebay. Everything, in total, was less than $60 including tax n shit. Anyone can do it. The hardest part is getting started and obtaining everything you need. Once you get it tho, its cake.
Anything you mess up on, there has been atleast 1 person on this thread that messed up on it too. And if you dont find what you’re looking for. People here are friendly. Unless you ask something like, “Where can i find buttons and a joystick!”
My advice to someone thats thinkin about building a custom stick: Do the research first. Find out what you’re getting into. Hit up as many sites as possible. Most importantly, read every page on this thread. I’m sure its the most updated information available online.so, READ first, ASK questions last.
I’ll post pics of my stick when i get a chance. good luck!
tru dat, tru dat… he is so right… you can find cheap parts lying around, and if you can’t the only things that will be worth alot are the EQUIPMENT to shape the stick, like the saw or drill bits and hammer, screwdriver etc., not the medium itself, like the wood, paint, hinges… these are all extra things… you can make one out of an old SPEAKER Box like one guy on the net did… you don’t need hinges unless your gonna utilize the opening function of your controller… and you don’t NEED to paint it… fuck looking good, make shure that shit works first…
too all the noobs…
don’t be afraid to go over this post and be confused… try searching on google or something on Arcade Controls, some sites may explain better than these posts here… ask questions if they haven’t been answered… be creative… we wanna see new ideas… then exploit them… lol jp… but just make sure you get the concept before going into the “FIRE”…
p.s. yes… i hopefully will not be lazy and get my FUKKIN friends VidCam for my Stick to be shown… unless you like paintball… PM me for a pic… lol “SPYDER SHUTTER TWEAKED” … better than a “cocker”.
I finally got a chance to use my friends digital camera.
here is a link to the pic
the top left stick is mine. the top right is a massstick, and the bottom middle is my firends.
it didn’t cost that much to make the sticks. the stick and button were 40 with s&h. MDF wood is 5 bucks. i got the 1000psx pad from eb for only 2 BUCKS!!! i had all the soldering stuff from modding ps2’s. and the only tool i had to buy was the 1 and 1/8 drill bit.
my massstick cost 170 with s&h. homestick was about 70. save 100 bucks.!!! plus i had fun making the sticks.
To all the newbies making sticks,pm me and i will answer questions about stick making.save room on thread. i dont mind answering questions that were alrdy asked and answered in the thread. i know how hard it is to look something up.

New Custom Questions
Hello,
First post here. Just found these forums yesterday. This is exactly the kind of stuff I’ve been looking for. I’ve read the entire backlog and learned quite a bit. I do have a few new questions.
I’m looking to build stick (obviously). Something along the lines of M3talslug’s. I’d like to make it PS2-based and then convert to the other systems as needed. Will be on Live with CvSNK2.
-
Has anyone hacked a PS2 Dual Shock controller? Does the fact that all buttons are analog affect the ability to use it? Any links to pictures available?
-
Has anyone used a Magic Box to go from PS2 to Xbox? Does this work with the Live headset without a problem?
Thanks!
All,
I have a MAME cabinet that I hooked up using an I-pac.
My questions is, is there something out there what will convert my ps2 keyboard connection from my I-pac to a Dreamcast?
I would love to put a DC in my cabinet too.
Brad
yes the whole trace is coper. you just need to scrape the coating off. all the lines on the board are copper
You paied 170 for a mas? You got ripped. Mine was only 100.
Yeah $20 a controller, are you talking X-Box? I like DC better my used DC pad cost me $5.
Joystick cost $13,
buttons cost $11,
wires and various electronic parts maybe $6,
I used an old speaker box (I don’t give a fuck how it looks as long as it plays good),
and I used less then 4 hours total making the shit even though it was my first time and I fucked up on the soldiering a couple times.
that comes to less then $40 for an arcade quality controller that took about 3 hours of work in front of the TV (which is prolly how I would have used those 3 hours anyway) using tools I borrowed from my friends dad (just a drill oh and I paid $3 for the bit:p). Wow if it takes anyone 8 hours either they are way to worried about being a professional about it (painting custom art and shit) or they are a fucking retard. Anyone could go find a fucking wooden box for less then $5 if they tried. And guess what I almost bought a MAS, those things are absolute shit… Everyone I know that has one it randomly cuts off in the middle of matches and they wasted $100 fucking dollars on it… plus when my microswitches wear out I had the foresight to order a couple extra so while the MAS player is eating shit I make a quick adjustment and I’m back in the game… And you want some irony? with the $60 bucks I saved I bought a multitool… Now when people’s MAS’s break I offer to make their dumb asses a stick…
