The official Cthulhu and ChImp thread - Try our new Dreamcast flavor!

Anyone have any problems with their MC Cthulhu engaging down at all times. I have 2 that I purchased over a year ago doing that recently. Tried the different firmwares and still nothing. I at least want to figure out whats wrong before buying a new pcb.

I’m incredibly sorry for the complete noob question but searching has got me nowhere because apparently no one is as ignorant as me

I’m trying to use two MC Cthulhu’s with my ps3, one Cthulhu wired to one ā€œfight stickā€ and another to another. Basically, using my ps3 in a custom arcade cabinet.

In a nut shell, two odd things happen. When I open up ā€œgame controllersā€ in Windows XP and plug in either Cthulhu in order to test the board, the ā€œgame controllersā€ window just disappears… Then, when I plug either Cthulhu into my ps3, nothing happens and no buttons work.

I’ve triple checked my wiring and it seems so simple but it’s just not cooperating with me and I’m currently up about 3 hours past my bedtime trying to search for answers with no luck. (sigh)

Can anyone set this straight for me?

Photos of your wiring please

If you want more specific pictures, let me know.

The only thing I didn’t try because I forgot to was to test out the board(s) by plugging them into my computer first but I figured there would be no difference with them being wired… unless they’re wired wrong but I don’t think so…

Oh man, I had a feeling I was wasting your time… I apologize, after looking over my wiring on the actual switches, I realized that I put all of the connectors on the ā€œnormally closedā€ prong… dumby.

Swapped those to ā€œnormally openā€ and we’re all good

You may delete my posts if you want.

I was going to say the switches are all wrong. LoL. We don’t delete posts around here. In the future (if someone actually figures out that you can search for things in SRK) someone might ask this question again and the answer will be right here. Regardless of how little it has to do with the thread that it’s posted in. Cheers.

I’m trying to update the firmware but there are 2 hex files in the zip folder. Which one do I use cthulhu.2.3.1ms.hex or cthulhu.2.3.10ms.hex? I have a feeling they are both the same?

From the readme.txt "-Includes both 10ms and 1ms speeds for PC/PS3 play. If you experience any stability problems with the 1ms version, either downgrade to the 10ms version, or upgrade your USB cable to a higher speed cable. "

So, start with 1ms and use 10ms (or get a better USB cable) if you have issues.

I tried searching but was unable to find the answer for this question. Can I use the provided USB socket to run to a Neutrik USB for PS3/PC, as well as solder an RJ45 to run to a Neutrik RJ45 for PS/NES/SNES/etc.?

Yes you can

Fining the answer kinda vague because to the expects the answer is too obvious.
And they tend to forget this do not come naturally to regular folks

Because of all the forum changes making old links dead, it took me FOREVER to find this post.

what are the chances of getting a firmware update to support PS4 and Xbox One? I’m guessing Xbox One isn’t happening anytime soon because I had to get my MC Cthulhu stick dual modded to support Xbox 360, but what about PS4? PS360+ is getting PS4 support in a firmware update apparently.

and is there a firmware update log somewhere for the past updates?

So far the only plans for next gen console support are with the PS360+. there no plans with the MC Cthulhu at this time.
PS4 support via firmware is in Beta with no ETA for release.
The Xbox One can be easily dual-modded with a PS360+ with the [Crossbone PCB](The Crossbone, Xbox One padhack with minimal effort

I’m having this issue as well… I’ve double and triple checked this out and I don’t think it’s my PC Engine. when I get my Turbo Everdrive I’ll have to verify this is the truth. Anyone come across this?

I’ve had the worst luck with sticks this week. I have an xbox 360 Hori VX with Chimp SMD installed by Gummo. Stick isn’t working on xbox 360 and ps3 is only semi working. I’ll list the status for each.

PS3:

  1. red and blue led on the chimp pcb
  2. xbox player indicator lights up.
  3. All six punch and kick buttons work.
4 . No stick directions work.
  4. The buttons on the guide panel are jumbled. The guide button doesn’t function as home like it used to. Start now functions as home. RB is functioning as down direction.

Xbox 360:

  1. Blue and Green Led on the chimp pcb.
  2. No player indicator light.
  3. No buttons or stick directions working anywhere.

All the wiring appears the same as always. Any ideas in what’s going on?

Confirmed, even with a tap I can’t get Japanese HU-Cards to work with the MC Cthulhu (I have a core Grafx). I’ll be getting a Turbo Everdrive this week and will test it out with US games.

Just got My turbo Everdrive, Tested a bunch of JP games and they work perfectly, even R-Type. Looks like the issue is only with JP HuCards

Today i’m preparing to replace my mc cthulu that i screwed up in my TE-S. I know where to wire all of my stuff, but Gummo had this one wire soldered with this little black thing. anyone know what the wire is for and where it goes to?

Knowing Gummo, anything. What the wire leads too?

That was my question. I made the mistake of cutting the wires, without finding noting the location. I was assuming it was standard wiring. Everything was standard except that one wire. I’ll just use the process of elimination when I get home. I’m still curious as to why it’s there.
