I could be wrong, but I don’t ever recall something being there on any of the TE PCBs I’ve worked with.

Thank you, I stand corrected. I have never worked on a TE PCB so I was working on an assumption. I have lost capacitors on other boards I worked on in the past. Just passing along some advice to prevent this happening to someone else.

Michael

And good advice it is. It is something so small that can disappear without notice and frustrate you to no end.

.

I notice that on some of these PCB’s they exclude some caps. Either they missed it in the Pick and Place, or it’s omitted for a reason (dunno why though)

Zin - if you can, try to go back and fix up some of that. It may work now, but eventually something may shift and that much exposed wire can cause some things that will have you tearing your hair out to track down and fix.

Another idea for the USB connection is to solder to the underside through hole points of the jack. Although what toodles said will probably be easier to do, and also allow you some extra length of wire to route the USB cable any way you want.

This wasn’t a ‘Chimp’ but it’s a great set of photos showing what your soldering jobs SHOULD look like

Just to be perfectly clear before I tackle this: Can you take a 360 TE and use a Chimp (plus a PS3 pad board) to make it PS3 compatible to boot, or does the Chimp really only work going from a PS3 stick and then adding a 360 pad board? I didn’t see anything in the FAQ regarding that.

Thanks!

The ChIMP adds PS3 functionality to whatever you put it in, so it does what you want it to. It will not add 360 functionality to anything, , but since your TE already has a 360 board in it, it is what you want.

Those specific caps are pretty optional. Microswitches cause a lot of bounce when pressed released; the voltage on the line gets very squirrelly for the microsecond or so after its pressed or released, and those caps are to help smooth it out. If the points the caps are gets shorted with solder, yeah that’s bad, but if the cap comes off, its not really anything to worry about.

Yes, you can solder a Chimp into a 360 TE stick to get get it to work on PS3 and 360. There is no other ‘ps3 pad board’; the Chimp takes care of talking PS3 (the CtHulhu part) and the switching between systems (the IMP part), so aside from the TE and the chimp, all you need is know-how, soldering tools, and wire.

::taps mic::

lulz…That soldering is pretty horrendous!

Thanks everyone for your constructive criticism. I must admit I underestimated this project and should have purchased extra tools (magnifying glass, solder sucker and a board holder). While I have a steady hand, my failing eye sight hindered any kind of progress for me.

Toodles: Thanks for clarifying the USB port issue I had. I didn’t attempt to solder the D+ D- connections because of the port. I also attempted to tin the cables but obviously failed to do it the correct way.

Unfortunately for me, I gotta go away on a business trip on Thursday and won’t be back for a couple of weeks. Not to mention my wife is due at the end of the month. Sooooo my next question is: Would any of you soldering top dogs in completing this project (minus usb cable)? If you do, feel free to sen me a PM a price. Thanks again.

your soldering wont allow for good results. i guarantee you will get bad results. your wires should to be wired on the piggyback connections (not required) for a cleaner install instead of wiring a splice-like connection on the screw terminals

Thanks for the tip.

Okay, I have a couple sticks I am just about finished with. I would like to use them with my xbox 360. I really don’t understand much about wiring systems or any of this stuff. I like to build things, so I built some arcade sticks. I have a friend of mine that is doing my wiring for me. He is an engineer and very capable. After reading lots of posts in this forum I am still confused over what I need to buy to get my stick working on the 360. I want to have an 8 button layout, but if that requires too much then a 6 button layout is fine with me. So,…what do I need (apart from the 360 PCBs) to make these work for the xbox 360?

Thanks very much for helping out this n00b!

Is the IMP board only to be used in the Mad Catz joysticks? I have tried to use the IMP board with the HRAP 3 pcb / hacked 4716 controller combonation twice with two different IMP boards and it won’t work. Also I have tried with the combonation of a cthulhu board and a 4716 hacked controller and it still does not work. Then I use the IMP in the 360 TE stick with a cthulhu board. I did this 3 different times with three different sticks and all three times it has worked with no issues. Whats the deal?

The Imp can be used in custom sticks as well as any other stick. The only caviot for any dual mod is that both systems be common ground. The Imp is needed if using the Cthulhu. The ChImp has an Imp board built in.

Michael

Well the ChIMP is the new hotness, but I still had IMPs and cthulhu boards and wanted to use them before I ordered again. I used all common ground pcbs unless I was mistaken. The ps3 hrap 3 pcb is common ground, the cthulhu is definitely common ground and the Mad Catz / Gamestop 4716 is a common ground controller so I dont know what the problem is. Do I have to connect VCC on the IMP to a certain point or will any VCC point do? I’ve connected it to the screw in terminal VCC point on the cthulhu and also tried to connect it to the V column and I got nothing both times. I know the cthulhu is working so the problem is most likely with the IMP board somewhere somehow.

How can I troubleshoot the IMP board? I wired up a MC cthulu to a IMP and madcatz 360 board, but when i plug the usb cable coming off the imp my computer is not happy with it, in either mode. When I plug a usb cable into the mounted jack, and straight to the computer, it detects as a MCcthulu board, so I think the imp is the issue.

are so similar, and only one has the IMP trouble shooting, thanks. I’d never have found that 2nd one.

The one that doesn’t mention IMP troubleshooting is linked in the first post of this thread, i think it covers everything in the other one, maybe update first post of this to include that link instead, it seems more comprehensive.

okay… I don’t understand this. I wired the cthulu board USB- and USB+ to the IMP, and ground, and VCC as well. the madcatz 360 pcb USB+ and USB- are disconnected.
I plug the USB cable into my computer, and this is what it says:
[523825.090895] usb 7-1: Product: Street Fighter IV FightStick TE
[523825.090896] usb 7-1: Manufacturer: Mad Catz, Inc.

How in the hell is it getting that from the cthulu + IMP?

Update… plugging it into my xbox makes the light on the power brick turn red, and my xbox won’t turn on…

I’ve got a question, What systems are able to be used with USB? For instance I know that the Xbox can easily use USB as I’ve got a cable that plugs into the xbox that I can plug a USB into… So would it be possible to put multiple consoles on one USB? If I where to mod a MadCats TE Stick with a MC Cthulhu unit… I was also reading about a chip that auto-detects what system its plugged into, does this work with more than just xbox360/ps3?
