The official Cthulhu and ChImp thread - Try our new Dreamcast flavor!

I have the ChImp assembled but when I plug it in to my PC it fails to setup. The message I get is “An error occurred during the installation of the device. The system cannot find the file specified.” I checked the orientation of the resistor packs, chips and caps and everything is they it is supposed to be. There isn’t even anything connected to the board.

^^^ I had one do this once, and if I remember right it had something to do with the soldering/wiring near the USB port. But I can’t really remember what I did to fix it.

Well the problem is my laptop computer not the ChImp. I plugged it into another PC and it was recognized right away. Still had the problem with the laptop. I am seriously thinking that it is the laptop. I had a MC Cthulhu plugged in there that kept locking up on me. Now it doesn’t work at all.

Keep them unassembled. I really dislike the screw terminals and usb jack.

Do you know what the estimated price will be?

Also, forgot if its been answered before, but is the standalone imp board getting the auto detect upgrade too?

+1 on the Unassembled kits…

keeps the prices low.

I agree with this as well, I much prefer to build my own for cost and because I dislike screw terminals. Please do this, and thanks if you do.

i love this board and can’t wait for the chimp.

What way do I wire up the buttons and stick on an MC Cthulhu. I have the pin out so I know where each button and direction is meant to go. But it’s the ground that’s confusing me. Where does each ground go?

There is only one ground. There is just more than one connection to the common ground.

voting for assembled :\ i hate soldering ! ~ this is awesome sauce though !! will make some leeway in smaller sticks

Unassembled, resellers can solder them up and sell assembled’s if the “market” demand is there

unassembled plz. I’m getting good at desoldering, but it’s still obnoxious.

Regardless of which way the production run goes, could you put me down for one of the unassembled ones in your beta batch? I’d appreciate it!

I have the ChImp in a 360 TE and its working flawlessly on both consoles and the PC thanks EJM and Toodles.

Regarding the ChImp: I’m assuming the unlisted contact points are for connecting other PCBs, and that the multiconsole cable connections are now removed?

Yes, they are for connecting to the other pcb(s), but it doesn’t have to be there. For instance, the unlabelled hole for ‘Up’ is directly connected to the ‘Up’ screw terminal spot. You can use whichever you prefer for connecting the ‘Up’ signal on the other PCB, same as the cthulhu. There are more of the unlabelled holes on the ChImp though, since I made a hole for the D+ and D- from the other board.

Yep. Chimp is PS3/PC only. It just doesn’t have the capability to do other consoles. If you need more, you’ll need an MC Cthulhu and an Imp, and won’t have autodetection.

Glad to hear it. Congratz on having the very first. Please plug it into as many PC’s, PS3’s and 360’s as you can and let me know if you run into any problems.

Nevermind, grounded wire came loose.

+1 for assembled

Would it be possible to add autodetection to the imp? What if you removed the start+select=guide to free up a couple pins?

Not gonna happen. Its not a pin issue, its a USB issue. For the autodetection to work, the chip has to understand USB. Trying make a board that is JUST an autodetecting Imp would be the same cost and size of the chimp, so it might as well do the PS3/PC stuff and be a full chimp.
