The official Cthulhu and ChImp thread - Try our new Dreamcast flavor!

Cheers.

I finished installing my MC cthulhu the other night and everything was fine. Last night i updated to the 1.3 firmware and i cant remember if i tested it.

Now when im playing on my PS3 (on dash) if i press a direction it just keeps going in that direction till i press another direction. I tried it on my 360 and the stick still works fine on there. I did realier on trim my cables to a neater length and sip tied them.

Any ideas as it was perfect only yesterday and i couldnt have wanted any more out of it.

Bri

edit: could someone post 1.2 so i can try that again?

Edit 2: Ok i found firmware 1.1 and flashed it and everything is fine again. So i redownloaded 1.3b again and flashed that. Restarted and it seems to be working all fine again

Just wanted to check before I buy, this usb cable works with the jack on the assembled Cthulhu right?

Yes.

Weird…
My PS3 recognizes the MC cthulhu and it works perfectly on it, same on the PC.
On the other hand, when I connect it to the ps2, it doesn’t recognize it on the homepage. But if I connect the stick while a game is playing on, it recognizes it on VS. Same goes when I connect the stick through the ps2 wire to a ps2>pc converter, it recognizes it on the pc and all the inputs work…

Yup, any A-to-B cable will work fine, including that one.
I should point out though, I have 5 meter USB cables that are black that I carry for the same price. The one you linked is 2 meter and white.

homepage?

I mean the front page you get when you turn your ps2, the page with the browser and the system configuration.

edit*
I’ve noticed that if I reconnect the stick to the ps2 while it’s working, it will recognize after a second or two.
Seems like once I load up a game, it disconnects again and I have to reconnect the stick to the ps2…
Any idea what’s the problem?:[

Not off hand, but the good news is that your wiring sounds good. Are you using any mods/hacks like a swapmagic or HDloader?

Nope, but I’ve got a modchip, a modbo one, I’ve insteald ages ago…
I guess I’ll try to find another ps2 and see if the same problem occurs there too.

Well, the consolation is you’re not the only one seeing that. I’ll be working on fixing that; I bought the 25" version of the Evo monitor JUST so I could connect component cables to it for reasons like this. It’ll be here early next week and I’ll work on it as soon as I can.

I’ve got 3 MC boards and 2 of them have this problem. The 1st one I got back in April works without a hitch. Not a huge deal as I play most of my PS2 games on my PS3.

What does a monitor got to do with it?X:
In the mean time, I’ll try to play with the wiring and maybe change the ps2 cord.
Might help maybe…

go to monoprice.com my friend.

Out of curiosity… does this mean that to get the autodetect functionality on my current MC Cthu + 360 TE I’d have to get a new Imp board (once you it working)?

Beat me to it. Found out about monoprice through this forum myself, and now I can’t even justify buying cables any where else.

On another note, will Cthulhu’s ever be in danger of being locked out by any PS3 firmware updates?

Locked out controllers: http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/03/ps3-firmware-3-0-locking-out-knock-off-controllers/

Thanks for the suggestion but the triggers were actually the problem.

Cheers Toodles. After checking the triggers as you suggested (trusty multimeter comes through for me agian). i found that they were wired correctly but the fool in Maplin sold me the wrong resistors. And me being a bigger fool for not checking properly before putting them in.

Thanks for the USB cable suggestions everyone, but I was looking for a relatively short, white cable and that one fit the bill perfectly.

Anyway, I’m about to wire up my first custom but I’m coming in with almost no knowledge of electronics. I read through slagcoin and wanted to make sure I have everything down correctly in this diagram before starting.

I didn’t include all the signal wires for the main buttons, but other than that there’s no glaring errors with this setup is there? And I’m not supposed to use the VCC slot if this is just a single system PS3/PC cthulhu stick right?

So I can have a station setup to connect other consoles to near my testing equipment (oscope). I need an oscope to see the signals, and a monitor to see if the board is working. oscope downstairs and huge ass tv upstairs doesn’t make it easy to troubleshoot. I paid extra for a monitor with component inputs so I can do that kind of testing fairly easy.

MC’s do not, and most likely will not ever, autodetect.

This question’s been beat to death already. Long winded answer is in this thread.

Looks good.

Alright, So the last time I asked questions I got most of my worries cleared up. But now that my student loans are coming in again (with surplus and grants that i don’t have to pay back)

I’m thinking of ordering this soon. But I have just a few more tiny questions to ask…

After I screw in the wires and tested that they work properly
(to an assembed cthutlu because, I’ve never modded before and can’t solder…yet), what would I do with the chuthlu board … Just gluegun it to a random postion in the case?

(I’m planning to mod a PS3/PC TE so that it’ll work with non UHCI controllers)

and what exactly does an IMP do? … I’m thinking Maybe in the future If I have a greater understanding of modding (and maybe learn and practice soldering) I might add a 360 board as well, and many multi board mods seem to have an IMP…

edit: Ignore the IMP question, I didn’t realize you had a seperate thread for that… I just saw a tiny section about ordering imp on here and I just thought it wasn’t covered… I’ll go check out that other thread now…

edit2: Ok, answer that Imp question… Or point me to that imp thread that everyone’s referring to… Because I can’t find it by browsing or searching… (I liked the old search better, Google is too… ehh… =/ but I guess it’s less strain on the servers…)

Toodles do you have a price estimate on the ChImp kits yet?
