The Official Convention Thread

Hey if you guys want to try out the latest Tekken Tag 2 build at SDCC come to the SDTekken room at Mezzazine Room 17 ab. We have like 8 setups with TTT2 on Asus monitors. We also have a UMvC3, SSF42012, and SFxT setup. The NOS girls are also in our room giving away a bunch of free NOS.

Friday

I was suppose to leave like at 4am but my friend could not take his car out because of his mom. So my friends and I went back to plan b which was go rent a car from Enterprise. We waited til 8am for it to open once we headed there all of their cars were sold out. So my friend was like fuck it and we just took his car to San Diego. We did not get there until 11:30-12pm. Once we got there got our badges. Went to the Kotobukiya to get my X-Force X-23 statue. I wanted to get the Uncanny X-Force 3 pack at Hasbro but did not get a ticket for it. I would have to wait until tomorrow to get it. The only panels I went to on Friday were the Cup O’ Joe and the Fighting game Panel. The Fighting game Panel was hilarious as Ono-San kept trolling and asking for Seth Killian to come back to Capcom. They showed us plenty of new Tekken Tag Tournament 2 footage. Left an hour early cause my friend was smoked too much weed so he was tired. Once we got to our hotel room we were trying to plan out what was there to do tonight. My friend could not get a hold of one of his other friends that works for WB/DC. So we just headed down the street to Phil’s BBQ. We waited almost 2 hours in line but the food there was so good. After that we went back to the hotel and called it a night.

Saturday

We were suppose to wake up at 4am but woke up an hour after. Once we got ready checked out of the hotel and went straight to the Convention Center. Way too many people there compared to the day before. The panels I went too were the Marvel television presents and they showed us a few short clips of Hulk Agents of S.M.A.S.H. and Avengers Assemble. I did 2 tickets to play Resident Evil 6 but I gave them away to my friends. I also got to play Marvel vs Capcom Origins. I didn’t lose a match even though I was playing terrible lol. Also showed us the Spider-Ham episode of Ultimate Spider-Man. Next panel I went to was the Marvel Video Games panel and that was when Deadpool showed up and announced his new video game. After that ended went to the Avengers vs X-Men panel. I walked around trying to take as much photos as I can. Also, tried to find some good trades to purchase but only ended up buying Locke and Key vol 1 and Avengers Nights of Wundagore. I did get my Uncanny X-Force 3 pack from Hasbro. I didn’t buy as much as I wanted. Overall, it was fun but went by too quick. I think next year I want to get 3-4 days. I still have not explored outside the gaslamp district at all. Also, need better or more people to go with.

tl;dr - went there late on friday, saw panels, got the exclusives i wanted, didn’t take that many pics, wanted to stay longer, need more people to go with next year.

This is EXACTLY how i feel! haha

THURSDAY - Fucking disaster. First, I got the most terrible news that I failed my nursing exam on which was supposed to be a care free day with no worries. Didn’t leave til about 1 and got there around 3 in the afternoon. Then, it turned out my reservations from hotwire were for NEXT WEEK and I couldn’t get a refund. Luckily, the place still had a room so they gave it to us for the same price though it was like paying double. Finally got our badges around 4:30, first thing we saw was Edwin Huang from skullkickers/UDON, I felt like an ass asking him where the UDON panels were but he was really nice about it. Got there at the UDON panel where Alvin Lee and Ono were, got my copy of MVC hardcover and got to take pictures of Ono while he signed it. Alvin Lee left and Edwin replaced him, so I had to wait another day. I introduced myself to Edwin and said TOKOYAMA! he asked for my handle, but we didn’t get to talk much because he was drawing for somebody else and I didn’t want to bother him. Though I think he felt extra nervous about it because my girlfriend was recording hiim draw lol. Took pictures, tried finding free stuff, and met this cool guy who showed us around trying to find shonen jump exhibit for my girlfriend. Time flew by so fast, and by the time we knew it was already closing. Went back to the hotel, which was about a 10 minute walk, ate and slept.

FRIDAY - Friday was awesome. Tried going to the Big Bang panel, but the line was TOOO LONG, almost 4000 people at 9:00 and the panel was at 12! We decided to just look around some more and get as much free stuff as we could. Met with Omar Dogan, and my girlfriend bought his book which he gave a free sketch for. Took more pictures, and got our Night of the Owls masks at the DC booth, ran into Orlando Jones (remember that guy from MAD TV?), took pictures of Levar Burton and Brent Spiner (DATA) from afar. Tried taking pictures of the walking dead cast from afar as well. Got a whole bunch of free capcom stuff, along with a poster signed by the producer who replaced Ono I believe. Went to see the GRIMM trailer on accident which was awesome, took pictures of that. Went to see the batmobiles, took pics and then went on to some LOTR game that we played and got free gandalf hats for. Tried to go to some panels and ended up with the UDON panel. Came back to see if I could get my sketch for my MVC hardcover from Alvin Lee. Waited there for awhile, and by the time I was up he said he was going back to his own booth. Waited at his booth and told me about how I’d have to pay extra this time, since that “udon” free sketch thing was only an incentive deal which they only got 10 bucks from it. I was a little sad about it since it was our last day, but we got a print from him anyway and he signed for the stuff I had with me. Still got to talk to him about the mythical bengus, and how he thought kinu nishimura was a guy when they met, he also said IKENO was his favorite capcom artist so that was cool. In the end, we got this awesome strider sketch from Joe NG, who was nice enough to draw it for us even though he was busy with other things.

During the last hours we tried meeting up with the friend we met previously, and tried shopping. Wanted to get some trades as well, but didn’t have enough time to look around. I ended up getting a pack of five gundam model kits for 15 so that was great. Wanted to take more pictures but it was time to leave. Even without the lack of alvin lee sketch, Friday was an awesome awesome day.

With the lack of a saturday badge and due to all the hotel business that happened (which took a good chunk of the money), we were not able to stay for another day at Comic Con. Also they JUST HAD TO BRING IN the new IRON MAN 3 suit which wasn’t there previously on our days which hurts. AND we also have to go back next week to SD without comic con, because the rooms we reserved are already paid for which hurts even more. Shit is going to feel like the opening to 28 days later when we come back.

Next time

Meet with more artists, See more panels, Try for return attendee badges (and if not, going to try for craigslist on the day of. The guy we met got a 4 day badge from CRAIGSLIST for about the same price.) Take more pictures/record everything I see, get a smartphone, meet more friends, and try to hang out with KZA (you going to comickaze!?). Also, FUCK HOTWIRE.

Thanks for sharing guys! That Strider sketch is awesome!

I think I’m going to Comikaze. I recently purchased an old issue of Thor that I want Stan Lee to sign. I remember last year tickets sold out because of Harry Potter. The hotel I stayed at was horrible. I really want to get a 4 day badge and crash at the Hard Rock or Hilton next year.

Hall H sucks if you wanted to see any of the big panels. You gotta waste a day if you want to get in. Comic-Con went by too quick. ;_;

We actually went last year and it didn’t seem sold out at the time, I think my cousin bought his day the day of, IIRC. But yeah, we actually got to meet Stan Lee and he signed some books for my girlfriend and I.

I didn’t have any great issues, so I gave him a trade that had all the origins. It was great, but it cost 50 bucks each just to meet him. Or 40 to take a picture. We went with the autographs and handshakes that would be immortalized in our minds forever.

I really want to go again, as it was our first con. I want to catch up on more artists that I missed out on at comic-con.

And you’re so right about comic con being quick. Why did it have to end so soon!? It seems like I imagined it, like a dream.

You should also check out Frank n Sons too its near Speed Zone and Round 1 arcade. Yea I know it cost 50 bucks for him to sign I would assume its 1 item right?

I feel all emo right now that Comic-Con ended. There was stuff I wanted to check out or stuff I wanted to buy. lol

Yeah, I was just about to ask you about that place! My friends and I were always planning on going there but for some reason it never goes through. I know stan lee came there not too long after comickaze, but I can only imagine how long those lines are. Must be like getting jordans the day the come out, or even worse, hall H size numbers.

But do you go there alot? How is it? Pretty good prices?

I hear you about the withdrawals man. So much to do and see in the limit amount of days, you gotta sacrifice time with panels for the things you planned on doing. On top of that, there was just so much to see that I don’t think I took enough pictures to say I was actually there. Like I had no evidence. But oh well, here’s hoping we get those badges again.

He appears once in a while there. Last time I went it was for Shawn Michaels and a bunch of WWF/WWE wrestlers. I also went when Stan Lee and Mike Tyson were the headliners, the place was packed. I haven’t camped for Jordan’s since the Fire Red 3’s. Its not as bad as Comic-Con but parking there on a busy day sucks. The place is in a warehouse. Only open on Wednesday and Saturday.

I don’t go there as much as before. Maybe like once or twice a year now. I might go this weekend if my friend wants to go.

edit: the stuff I bought to get at Comic-Con. Not in the pics is a Capcom lanyard Avengers Nights of the Wundagore tpb and Locke and Key vol 1 tpb

Dude that is awesome!

I really need to start getting into figures. Was it a tough wait to get these while you were there? I think I remember seeing those HASBRO lines, they seemed a little crowded. Damn, dat x-23. Really jealous of that one, now I wish I could go back!!

I’m glad we all came out with at least one thing that we wanted.

Well my friend had a friend in line already. I woke up late on Saturday at 5am (lol) but I was suppose to wake up at 4am to get ready to go there and fall in line. But it all worked out in the end I didn’t have to waste my time in the Hasbro line to get a ticket to shop at their booth. I did that last year to get the Avengers Mighty Muggs and the Marvel Legends Thor. They didn’t have the ticket when I went back in 2010. I walked up to the booth and got Galactus like nothing. I don’t collect that much figures because of space but as long as its an exclusive I’ll probably collect it. If I bought another X-Force set I could have made some good cash on eBay since people are paying lots of money for it right now.

This was my first statue. Good thing I waited out since the first X-23 statue people didn’t like how she didn’t show angry in the pose. Last year I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get the Emma Frost one but when I thought about it they sold out.

There was stuff I wanted but didn’t have enough funds like the MVC art book you have, IDW Daredevil Artist edition, Locke and Key keys, etc.

Wow, you got that galactus too! I remember seeing that in the comic con movie. Actually, once I got that book I felt exactly how he did when he got that galactus “I’m good! I’M GOOD!” haha.

Do you know if they had these at comic con while you were there?

Maaan, I should’ve looked around some more. It all went by so fast.

They probably were there. I did take pics of the Marvel toys at the Hasbro booth I’m not sure if they were there or not.

got my Friday and Saturday badges for Comic-Con next year

I got 4 day with PN for my gf and I. I was #2855 in the waiting room, she was 180XX. Good thing we were able to buy for up to 3 others!

Got the same deal but without preview night. Number was 9997, I didn’t I think I was even going to get close to a four day let alone a single. Does anybody know if preview night will be available separately in future sales?

That’s awesome that you got it for your friends too.

It should be since this was a small portion of the badges. I noticed in a facebook group I’m in some people were upset they didn’t get preview night.

I was 10,000 something earlier this morning and I think I could have got 4 days with or without preview night. I’m glad they did this because for the people who went. I hope they do this from now on. I don’t like how the prices change every year

this is by Friday/Saturdays
2010 - 35
2011 - 37
2012 - 40
2013 - 42

Next thing to worry about is the parking permits sometime around April next year.

Thanks man. Yeah it feels like such a relief getting it out of the way though, so I can’t complain much. I actually would’ve been just happy that I even got a ticket and 4 is even better, which is plenty of time. Those parking permits, and hotels are other headaches to worry about but I’m just happy we all got through this process not going empty handed.

Btw, how was parking for you guys this year? I had to run back to this one lot that had it changed from one day being 40, with an additional 20 everyday afterwards. I’m not sure how bad it was in the convention itself since my lot was a little closer to the hotel we stayed in. Good thing it was only two days. I really want to be more prepared this time around. Really learned some hard lessons not being familiar with how the convention works or how san diego operates as a city during the event.
