The Official Collected Editions Thread (New & Improved!)

I think issue seven of Shaolin Cowboy kind of ended the storyarc, and there was a message that seemed to imply that there would be no more of it unless Darrow got bored and had extra time. But it’s hard to say for sure because it’s been so long since I read it and my memory is a bit hazy on that subject. For all I know, I could have imagined the whole thing. I thought it said the TRADE, BABY was on its way, but I have not seen it and have no idea if it has or ever will happen.

I used to buy Doc Frankenstein one or two times a year. I have no idea when the next issue is coming. The last issue I got is #6 and I don’t know if there’s been anything more. It’s entirely possible that I’ve completely missed subsequent issues, but maybe not. Don’t even ask me about the TRADE, BABY.

I posted some new shots of my collection over at marvel masterworks messageboard:

I got 100 bullets a few weeks back. Awesome comic. I’m on #27 right now.

i just read dark knight strikes back. not as bad as people made it out to be. about to reread DKR

I bought the Aztek: The Ultimate Man TPB by Grant Morrison

jobs leaves me little time for pleasure reading so things have been slow.

X-Men Legacy: Divided He Stands MPE - this is the first post-messiah complex Mike Carey x-men book and it is very good. I like how the sentinel girl still plays a vital role. Much more linear than most of Carey’s stuff up to this point which is a good thing. Great art too.

Batman: The Black Glove HC - just read the first half of this book so far, which is a riff on 10 little indians with the league of heroes or whatever they are called assembled on an island at the behest of a mysterious guy. Pretty good stuff, classic morrison fun.

Shadowpact vol. 3 - first half is Willingham, then it gets into the other guy. Not nearly as good as vol. 2. This series was cancelled but I will pick up the last trade. At the end of the day it was never as good as it was during the Day of Vengeance mini.

JLA Deluxe Edition vol. 1 - DC is finally putting out some oversized books. Porter’s art isnt the best but these stories are pretty cool. I wasnt reading comics during the time these originally came out. Blue superman wtf?

Superman: Last Son HC - they included the 3-D glasses but you had to rip them out and I wasnt doing that so the 3-D issue was a little hard to get through. Felt towards this the way I did towards Up, Up, and Away tpb, that it was a fun little read but didnt feel like it fit in the current DCU timeframe. Actually I think the story itself is pretty worthless and so far Busiek/Rucka > Johns for me on Superman.

Incredible Herc: Against the World MPE - good stuff. Funny and fun. Although Layla Miller >> Amadeus Cho

currently reading: Batman: resurrection of ras al ghul, Kirby’s 4th World Omnibus vol. 3, Predator Omnibus vol. 2

just read whatever happened to the man of tomorrow. wow. very powerful shit. had tears in my eyes.

Yipee! Finally a reason for me to visit this site again!!

I just got into comics (at 24 years of age, I know, for shame). I am currently reading Watchmen, and it is phenomenal. I have The Killing Joke on our bookshelve after this.

I am thinking of picking up the Civil War book. Something about a massive war with a lot of genetically altered hereos puts a smile on my face.

Anyway, nice to see another slice of internet I need to check out regularly.

Oh, can anyone inform me of a site that reviews comics? I have found a few but they seem pretty amatuerish. Thanks.

just out of curiosity, i picked up the first Mouse Guard trade…it was quirky fun.

and i’ve always been meaning to get into the Walking Dead series. i’ve heard nothing but stellar reviews on it.

apparently the 1st volume of the omnibus is out on it…with the 2nd coming out in November (which will get me all the way to issue #49). i’m thinking of just splurging for both of those harcovers.

oh, and have to put in a word for the Goon.

just got Goon: Chinatown awhile back…and it was FANSTASTIC. there surprisingly isn’t much humor in it as with his other stories, and it’s completely self-contained, delving more into the Goon’s past. how he got the scars on his face, etc.

recommended highly if yer into reading other than the “big two.”

first walking dead omnibus is oop i think?

gah!

well, that’s no good…

i recently read some alan moore gl stuff. most notably the story where abin sur hears the prophecy. alan moore is a genius

Yo, I’ve been busy with school so SRK got put on the backburner for a bit. Good to be back though.

Recent Pickups:

Flight Volume 5: Meh. If you liked past Flight releases you’ll enjoy vol.5, but the series seems to be loosing some of its magic after this release (for me at least).

Batman: Lovers and Madmen: I fucking loved this trade. Hardcore Batman fans might disagree with me but Lovers and Madmen has one of the best joker origin stories I’ve ever read.

Nat Turner: I was a little let down by this one but i think my expectations were too high coming into it based off all the critical acclaim it got. The comic is based on the true story of Nat Turner, the man who lead one of the only successful slave rebellions. The story itself is well executed, but there is nothing really standout about the book imo. I’m convinced it was white liberal guilt that won this graphic Novel so much acclaim (or maybe I’m just to white to really get it)

Dammit, D. Punchy… I THOUGHT YOU WERE BLACK

slowly working my way through more tpb’s:

Superman & The Legion of Superheroes - story was pretty good, not great. Art I didnt really care for. Still not sold on Johns Superman.

Brave & the Bold vol. 1 (re-read) - Great George Perez art, fun story by Mark Waid. Lobo/Supergirl contained most of the best bits. Have vol. 2 on deck

I’m about 3 issues into the Punisher War Journal Classic tpb and it’s pretty awesome. Carl Potts + Jim Lee.

Formerly known as the Justice League is a fun read. Anyone read ‘I can’t believe it’s not the Justice League’? How good is it?

I Can’t Believe… is a direct sequel to Formerly Known As… by the same creative team so it’s also highly enjoyable. DC’s also reprinting the old JLI issues from the '80s as hardcovers, so those will be worth buying as well.

Cool, are Blue Beetle and Booster Gold as entertaining in JLI as in these 2 books?

i personally enjoyed the “I Can’t Believe” trades.

silly fun. read both awhile ago, but both Blue Beetle and Booster Gold are good. Max Lord (pre douche-bag days) is also fun in these stories.
