deadpool
is that the name of the book? sorry, i really know NOTHING about comics or graphic novels…
yea. well the ones you can find are cable and deadpool
Reading other Alan Moore works is definitely the way to go. Painy just has an unreasonable mancrush on Deadpool, so in his mind, it doesn’t matter who writes the character. Hell, the dude named his DAUGHTER after Deadpool. That’s how far off the deep end he’s gone.
So, angrylibby, the main thing is, what are you interested in? What was it about Watchmen that appealed the most to you? Moore’s one of the most versatile writers ever, and he’s made just about every genre interesting at one point or another.
From Hell is more than just a comic book. It’s an intense experience. If you thought Watchmen is dense, From Hell is on a whole other level. Moore definitely adds a TON of flavor to the Jack the Ripper story, and there’s all sorts of educational stuff in there. (Like a lot of descriptions of historical London and such.)
You might also enjoy some of Frank Miller’s work, like Batman: Year One, Batman:The Dark Knight Returns, Martha Washington (which is actually illustrated by Dave Gibbons, the Watchmen artist), Ronin, and his Sin City books.
There are tons of amazing comics out there… It’s overwhelming, man. We’re seriously living in the golden age of comics right now, especially in terms of the overall quality of the craft.
Unless you want to be inundated by dozens of people recommending you dozens of (their favorite) comics, you could probably do fine just by taking your time and reading other Alan Moore comics. Those, in turn, will help you figure out what kind of comics you enjoy, and then you’ll never have to pay attention to those random street crazies who scream “Deadpool!” randomly like they have Tourette’s or something.
OH, i also forgot, The Filth (http://www.amazon.com/Filth-Grant-Morrison/dp/1401200133/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1219998604&sr=8-1), is pretty tight, crazy shit going on in there and crazy story telling…an interesting social commentary indeed…
The DMZ is also a very good series so far…
and i dont understand which comic are you referring to when you asked if it will detract from…

DMZ
Exterminators
Punisher MAX (you would like Barracuda)
Grendel: Devil by the Deed (introduction by Alan Moore!)
Mage: The Hero Discovered
Transmetropolitan (You would probably dig this)
Preacher (HBO plans for the show were cancelled)
i meant, i have enevr read the batman comics, will that be a problem if i read the miller and moore batman works. with year one, i doubt it as it is a re-introduction of the batman mythos, but will the killing joke have the full impact if i’m not a reader of the comics.
as far as the aspects of watchmen that i loved was the sheer scale and depth of the story and subtext. also, the complete retelling of the superhero mythos.
i am definately going to pick up “from hell” next, but beyond that, i will have to use these lists as a jumping off point.
You can read Killing Joke and not have any problems with it so long as you know basic Batman info. If you know who Batman, Joker and Comissioner Gordon are you already know more than enough. I mean even if you just know them from the cartoons, movies or the 60s TV show you’ll be fine.
yeah, i have a basic understanding of the batman story. i have seen all the movies save the joel schumacher ones.
Well the Schumacher movie had a different Batgirl, Barbara Pennyworth or something… And she wasn’t in any of the other flicks… So what you’d probably have to know prior to reading Killing Joke if you don’t know this already is that Commisioner Gordon’s daughter Barbara Gordon was once Batgirl. I haven’t read it in a while and even if you don’t know that you’ll be okay, but it has more of an impact if you are aware of this.
yeah, i think i knew that. i did used to watch batman:tas a lot.
seems like the batman storylines have lent themselves to some of the best uses of the medium. b:tas is easily one of the most sophisticated “childrens” cartoons i’ve ever seen.
no, it will not be a problem…also from batman “the long halloween” is really good on top of what has been mentioned…
anyone else here every read The Filth??? it gets mixed reviews but i thought it was dope…another one of those “have to read more than once” things to fully understand it…

there is nothing wrong with a little (ok a lot) of love for deadpool.
Dude, there’s something wrong when your love for Deadpool makes you wanna buy a Daniel Way comic.
WTFOMGBBQ:wow::wow::wow::wow::wow::wow:
It’s like I’m back in highschool and someone just told me it’s saturday when I thought it was thursday and then I come to realize it’s actually monday:shake:
Edit: While I’m here I might as well pick up from hell HC lol.
After some sightseeing I went straight to the local comicshop which was surprisingly well organized alphabetically and by publisher and some even by color of cover 0_o.
Picked up:
preacher vol3
100 bullets vol2
thunder bolts caged angels hc
the man who laughs hc
the killing joke deluxe hc (love the new coloring:tup:)
from hell hc
I’m dying to read bats rip and final crisis…man being exclusively a gn collector sucks sometimes.
so i have flash ignition. anyone wanna trade for it?
so I just remembered about these two awesome comics called Doc Frankenstein and Shaolin Cowboy. It’s only taken what, 4.5 years for 6 issues of Frankenstein and 7 issues of Shaolin to come out? I think it’s been over a year and a half since the last issue of either came out. Wtf?
Oh man, completely forgot about those. Never read Doc Frankenstein, but heard great, glorious things about it.
And Shaolin Cowboy is probably one of the most awesome comic books I’ve ever read, though I have honestly no idea how many of those seven issues I’ve actually read because it’s been so long between issues.
I want to know now too.
