Wtf am i reading. That game was revolutionary ffs. Its still very enjoyable since the controls are super smooth and the music is great. Idk what yall smoking
ha, that always brings back memories—that underwater theme from Donkey Kong Country is one of my favorite game-music tracks ever produced. I loved it so much I recorded it back then on cassette.
Man, I really want to get back to Astral Chain but this Diablo addiction is too strong at the moment; the new season just started last Friday so that’s taking up a lot of game time once again.
What does any of what you just said have to do with how the game looks?
It’s a technology marvel for what could be done on the SNES, for sure, but the overall aesthetic is just ugly. Seeing this trailer, especially after playing Sonic less than 15 minutes before, was like getting hit with a fart in the face.
Only one of those games don’t look like Crap, and strangely its the EA game.
DKC didn’t age well at all for a SNES title.
I gotta disagree with you there, pal. I remember 14-year-old me getting DKC when it released and being completely blown away by how awesome it looked. Every level looked incredible- jungle, forest, crystal caves, the fucking SNOW levels! And I had never seen animations like that on the SNES before. To this day I still say the DKC games are the best looking games from that console generation. By a fairly large margin.
Seeing this back in the day was awesome, I agree buddy. Especially the rain and lightening effects. I remember thinking “DAMN!”. However time has moved on and wasn’t kind to it. I’ll stick fuck with it, doe.
This is where the line is drawn though.
Then why do you say it’s STILL ugly as fuck all if you were so blown away by it back then?
My bad, it was initially I was impressed with it. Seeing it a few years after release to now, was me seeing it beat with the ugly stick.
Well maybe it’s the nostalgia that’s influencing my opinion, but I still maintain that’s it’s one of the best looking SNES games. I thought that was widely agreed upon so it caught me off guard to see people say it’s ugly.
That’s my favorite game for Wii U. It’s platforming bliss. Especially if you enjoy speedrunning levels. The level design and the momentum physics work incredibly well together to facilitate optimization, but it also allows for choice in which line you want to take.
It’s also fun if you just like to meander through it and explore for secrets, but I find the most fun in competing with Time Attack scores that other people posted. You can watch their runs and everything.
And the great David Wise returns and does not disappoint. One of the level themes even has a banjo!
DKC looks fine to me even now. Yeah the 3d models turn sprites don’t look as good as they did back then but it still looks fine to me. Might be because I know the amount of effort it took to look the way it does back then but I say it still holds up…goes double for DKC 2.
I holds up pretty fine. I thought those games where kind of ugly from the jump.
I am not sure. Xmen mutans of the apocalypse looked and played great too, although it was 2d graphs. Batman TAS on SNES used a lot of cool effects too. At the time it was great to see so much effort going on details
whoah, I’m not sure how this one sneaked past me… a friend just told me about this, which is on sale for 10 bucks right now:
The game where all royals take a clue from Dejah Thoris and wear next to nothing.
It’s actually a fun game.
Note I say Dejah Thoris, I am referring to the official art and not the books.
In all the official art, Dejah Thoris way is overdressed.
I had code of princess on 3DS. Really solid and crazy fun title. I bought the EX version on Switch when it was on sale last year but I haven’t gotten around to playing it.
Yoshi’s Island looks incredible too. I’m not taking anything away from the pixel art of the SNES. In fact, I think that was the golden era for dots. Look at any JRPG from Square, or Super Castlevania 4, or Mario RPG. Those games are extremely visually pleasing.
I guess my point is that DKC did something profound for the time, and it really resonated with me. The texture and animation in those games still impress me, but I guess that starts getting into subjective territory.
The whole thing is subjective. The tech was incredibly impressive but for me created something that looked super plastic, fake, and manufactured.
