What was the the U even for? I saw some old advertisements on YT, for it. The U would show up after a finger was de-pressed from the touch screen.
I’ll say it again, the system was awesome, but predictable (for the most part), and if I had the other systems I still would have more games for the U than the PS4 and Xbone.
The controller was mostly awesome. It looking cheap, garbage “rumble” and being tied to the system so if it breaks you have to send it for repairs and are SOL until it comes back. The last one is a pretty big deal breaker and I don’t blame people for not wanting to take a risk on a purchase like that.
The Gamepad never lived up to its potential. The number of games that (successfully) used the Gamepad in a novel and interesting way and not as just a glorified HUD area can be counted on one hand. The very best games on the system often didn’t even use it at all. It was pretty much dead weight that ate up processing power and hamstringed the OS’s UI. They wouldn’t even let you set the damn Wifi without the Gamepad.
Mario Maker on Game Pad was so convenient which is one of the reasons for its awesomeness. It’s seriously the best interface improvement on a console. BotW would’ve been that much better if you didn’t have to pause the game every time you wanted to switch clothes or items. I would love to do that on the fly while on horseback, paragliding or running through the fields.
The other being, it was faster than using right stick as seen here
Kinda hard to do that on a console, Elder Scrolls and Fallout had similar issues on consoles and none of those issues on PC.
Mainly being with PC you have 120 key keyboard to be your hot keys instead of a D Pad- 2 analog sticks 4 face buttons and 4 shoulder buttons
So I was playing online one night and there was this race that I saved because I thought this racer had some how hacked the game and I wanted to study it. I pelted this racer with 3-4 red shells while they were in first and I KNOW I fucking hit them cause they dropped coins and Waluigi did the first pump and everything…but this person didn’t seem to slow down. Person also didn’t have a mushroom either so I just got through looking it over and it looks like there may be a way to lessen the stun of getting hit by items (shells at least) if you have a mini boost stored up and let go just prior to being hit. I don’t know if this was a thing in the the original MK8 and I haven’t tested it out myself yet but that’s the only explanation I have for what I’m seeing. Each time I hit Toadette was during a corner and she had a mini turbo stocked and right before she was hit the flames on the back of her kart were the color of her turbo.
If this is a thing that means that the best time to hit someone now is on straightaways if they’re aware of the tech. I’m pretty sure this works well on Red Shells since the game gives you a warning before you get hit so you can have a round about time frame for when to let go. I’m gonna have to test this out when I get an opportunity though.
Really wish MKTV worked fully then I could just put up the race to show it.
True, but the convenience of creating levels in your hand and then immediately testing them on your tv was what was so appealing about using the gamepad. The Switch can’t do that, or any other console that I can think of.
You can’t use the Switch on the tv when it’s in your hand. That function alone was what I found appealing specifically for Mario Maker on Wii U. I could create something in the level and just hit the button to play it on the tv without docking, then immediately go back to edit mode to make adjustments. Having to dock the Switch and then switch controllers to play your creation on the tv (assuming Mario Maker comes to the Switch) would take two extra steps in between going back and forth. That’s the exact convenience that I enjoyed with the gamepad.
Did you guys even play Mario Maker on the Wii U? What made it so amazing is that it displayed the game on that TV and the Gamepad AT THE SAME TIME. I’m not saying that the Switch doesn’t have a touch pad, or that it’s not incredibly inconvenient to dock it or pick it up. But the Gamepad completely eliminated that step. Which meant I could sit on my couch and edit a level in my hand and play it on the big screen. The levels I made required a lot of fine tuning going back and forth between editing and testing. I always played the game on the TV, so that’s the display I used to test the levels out. Having the canvas in my hand and the ability to play at the same time is the convenience that ONLY the Gamepad could afford.
So having the Gamepad as a way to make and edit levels while play-testing them on the TV was an unintentional use of the Wii U’ s features? Well, shit. I guess I pulled a fast one on Nintendo.
Samus in Mario Kart…as odd as it is to say this…doesn’t fit too well among all the more comical, sillier personalities the other characters have. Yes Link is in yet at least in his series he actually smiles and has a bit more personality. Thus this is why the squids fit better. I still say by this point we might as well rename it Super Dash Bros!
but only if Fox/Falco/Wolf make it in and he gets a Landmaster!
