(Sorry this is really long and kinda hops around. I tried to make it as coherent as possible)
I absolutely love Pokémon and always will. I’ve never had any real issues with the mainline Pokémon games until Sun/Moon. Even though I thought Diamond/Pearl was a bad generation Pokémon design wise it was still a very good if not great game. Black and White was really good too. It just lacked in a few departments, imo.
X/Y was a much needed breath of fresh air for several reasons. Even though it was never presented as such it felt like a soft reboot or a “hey. Let’s start with a fresh slate” since they knew DPP and B/W weren’t the best received. X/Y ended up being great if not fantastic. To have a title that good to follow it up with Sun/Moon was really disappointing.
I get wanting Pokémon to be accessible since it is and always has been a children’s game but the hand holding in Sun/Moon was so incredibly frustrating and absolutely killed the pacing of the game and sense of exploration. Which is one my favorite parts of Pokémon. It made me hate the game. They made a lot of other changes I didn’t like but the handholding, start/stop pacing and lack of exploration were my main points of contention.
Sword and Shield just feels like they’re taking even more steps backwards.
I just don’t like the presentation of Sword Shield. Almost all the Pokémon we’ve seen are boring. The world we’ve seen so far is boring. The gimmicks are just too gimmicky. A lot of the NPC’s we’ve seen so far are either generic looking or lifeless.
My issues with Team Yell is they’re just another disappointing antagonistic team. They’re literally just a cheering squad for Marnie. While Team rocket is always considered “the best” antagonistic team, team plasma and team Galatic were great too. Team Flare from X/Y was fine. Team Skulls dialogue was funny and creative. Their leader Guzma was cool too but they were irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Team Aqua and Magma are laughably stupid because their goals are dumb (cover the entire water and land respectively) but they’re remembered fondly because their leaders, Archie and Maxie were awesome
What I do like about Sword and Shield: The gym leader designs are great. I also like the fact they are presenting Gym Battles as major events like we always pictured in our heads as kids and how they were presented in the anime. Drednaw is great Pokémon design too. As is Galarian Weezing. Marnie’s design is simple but really cool.
So there are things that I do like about the game. Just not enough for me to think it’s a going to be a good game or purchase it.
What Most Pokémon fans have against sword and Shield and why they’re “boycotting” it is the lack of National Dex. Which is a version of the Pokédex that unlocks after you beat the main storyline. Since Ruby and Sapphire they’ve had a “Regional Dex” and “National Dex”. So it’s been more or less a staple for almost 20 years. So it being omitted is a huge deal deal to a lot of players and has caught a much deserved amount of criticism.
I personally dont care about the National Dex. I haven’t cared about catching every Pokémon since Ruby/Sapphire. I play Pokémon to experience that region, that generations Pokémon, to face that generations gym leaders and elite 4.
While I agree the lack of national dex is an issue. It’s an issue I don’t care about.
