The Nintendo DS thread v.2

^Yeah around then, hope the music’ll be good =3
Also I’ve finally figured out the answer to the HIJKLMNO riddle a few days ago XD

Has anyone played Knights in Nightmare or whatever its called?

Saw it earlier today and was kinda interested in getting it but decided to wait

Just picked up layton 2. In store pick up from bestbuy.com

It is a cool idea for a game but you really do the same exact thing over and over. I know that can be said for a lot of games but this one is different somehow. I played it for a couple of hours and then traded it back in.

Layton 2 is great! My one MEGA minor gripe ATM is
it’s from early in the game

Spoiler

“Puzzle No. #” I really really don’t like the green colour they’re using for the numbers this time it totally stands out and is ugly.

Other than that I am having a blast with the game.

So about the Layton games, I only sampled a little bit of the first one (“Ah, could you help me figure this one out?”), but is there anything more to it than an electronic book of puzzles and riddles?

I do want to pick it up since I love that sort of thing, but I don’t really want to spend $40 on something I can do with a $5 riddle/puzzle book. It doesn’t help that most of the stuff I was asked to help with, I’ve already seen in riddle/puzzle books before as well! (I read a lot of those while I was a kid, and I still memorize the answers)

Sad. It looked like it could be fun.
I guess I’ll go around and see some reviews on the game.

knights is also extremely complex, and feels like an ordeal to play imo. even once you learn the system you spend so much time tweaking your units and things like that, i’m just never in the mood to sit down and deal with it.

Well I for one don’t know about…99% of the puzzles in at least the FIRST GAME, but if you like puzzles, this game is loaded with them.
I think you CAN find the game for cheap, at least from online retailers IIRC, but IMHO the game is worth the price.

I think I’m almost done finishing the game (75% thru I think) and the story’s a lot better than the first game at least from what I’ve seen.

I’ll say this though: The Layton games games can make you feel smart when you solve puzzles the first or 2nd time around:rofl:

Sigh, the Miles Edgeworth game is the one game ATM that I really wish could come out sooner =/ “EUREKA!”

Well I just beat Layton 2 a few minutes ago, and overall a good sequel and good game.
Looking forward to the 3rd game

Sounds fairly short, if you solved it that quickly, I’d probably beat it all in a day or so, then never play it again. :S

Replayability is pretty high on my game priority list, which is why I have rhythm, puzzle and the AW series as my primary DS games. I like beating old ranks, and if I’ve already done that, beating old scores. Multiplayer is good too, as long as “guest” players don’t get overly gipped.

Also, OMNOMNOM goes my dsd case.

layton games always have new free dlc like every week, so it doesn’t really get old

i need some game recommendations. any genre. just list your favorites.

Games I own:

Advance Wars: Dual Strike - While it has extremely broken gameplay because of certain CO powers, new Black Hole units or the Tag/Skill system, it’s still fairly fun and fairly challenging. Personally, I prefer this title over AW:DoR simply because it has more playability (and Sami). It has 5 single player modes: Campaign, War Room, Survival, Real-Time Combat and Versus (against COM). The only problem is multiplayer is multi-cart only for multi DS play, and local wireless as well; no Nintendo Wi-Fi here. It’s still capable of single DS hot-seat though, as always.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin - While this game doesn’t have as many single player modes, Multiplayer is where this game shines. With a more balanced CO system, obviously more players would want to play this over AW:DS (not to mention AW:DS is fairly rare, while AW:DoR is easy to come by). This game also has Nintendo Wi-Fi mode, so you can play with even more people. Its single player is lacking, however, with only a Campaign/War Room fusion, and a regular Free Versus (COM) mode. Still has Multi-Cart only for Multi-DS play, but Single DS Hotseat Versus still exists.

Elite Beat Agents/Ouendan series - These games are addicting. Single player is fairly challenging (the Ouendan series moreso than the EBA game, IMO), and even moreso when going to beat your score or get an S rank. The Multiplayer is quite good, and quite intense when the players competing are very skilled at the game; the only downside is that songs/difficulty are limited when it’s single-cart mode, but it’s a lot of fun when you have more than one cart. No Wi-fi, local only.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time - If you’re into the Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu type of gameplay, then this is for you. The battle is real-time, and has fairly good platform and puzzle elements. If you decide to make a party for Single Player, the AI is kind of annoying and doesn’t really serve more than fodder. However, the game does have Multi-cart only single player, allowing players to play through the host’s story mode with them. There is also Wi-fi, allowing you to play with players who have the game on Wii or DS. As for replayability, there are Normal, Hard, and Very Hard1-10 modes, with VH10 being extremely difficult (even with maxstat characters), as well as New Game+ mode.

Jump: Ultimate Stars - Fighting Game where you can play as all your favorite Shonen Jump characters. Everything from Bleach to Yu-gi-oh, Bobobo-Bobobobo to Yu-Yu Hakusho, it’s quite the roster. People say it’s akin to Smash Brothers, but the actual combat is a little more like Soul Calibur: You have a lifebar, and you can get knocked out of the arena. The only thing akin to Smash would really be the controls (direction+button) and the scoring system (+2, -1, etc.). There is single cart Multiplayer, but you’re given random character decks. Multi-cart allows you to fight others’ decks, and yes, there is a wi-fi mode.

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - It’s the Legend of Zelda all over again, just with touchscreen controls. Tap there to go there, make your boomerang fly in an 8 shape by drawing it, it’s great fun. Multiplayer is a little silly, but it’s good entertainment. My friends enjoy it a lot. Single and Multi-cart, however, Multi-cart allows you to earn more parts to customize your ship whereas DS Download play does not.

Meteos - Similar to Planet Puzzle League in a sense, but yet, completely different. I suck at PPL, but I’m pretty good at Meteos. You got your basic Single Player Options: “Story”, Endless/Survival and Free mode. Multiplayer is Single and Multi-cart, I believe Multi-cart allows more choices on your home planet (different field widths, gravity, color ratios, etc.) while Single-cart gives players limited choices or random. Can’t remember.

Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword - Kind of like LoZ:PH, except featuring Ryu Hayabusa from the Ninja Gaiden series. To be honest, I only played this game for 3 minutes to test the cartridge (bought it used), then moved on to other games I bought (cough AW, AW2:BHR, AW:DS). I don’t really have much to say.

Puyo Pop Fever - One of my favorite Puzzle games of all time, if you’re a Puyo Puyo/Puyo Pop fan, or have played Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine/Kirby’s Avalanche, this is the game for you. The Fever system allows for longer games with good offsetting techniques, and even allows players who aren’t quite as good to last longer and even have a chance against veteran players (like my younger siblings vs me). Single player is your standard BnB with puzzle games: 3 Story(Easy path, Normal Path, Hard Path) and 3 Endless modes (Fever, Mission, Free). Multiplayer is Single Cart and up to 8 players, I do not believe Multi-Cart offers any bonuses. Any more than 5 players introduces lag and huge resolution decrease, but gameplay is still the same. This game is extremely hard to find. (I only found 2 sellers when I was looking for it.)

Trauma Center: Under the Knife - Basically an Operation/Surgery simulation utilizing touchscreen controls. There’s some good storytelling in here, and a score/ranking system to increase replayability. Some of the later missions are extremely difficult. I have yet to play the second game.

Games I’ve borrowed/played through DS download:

Clubhouse Games - Basically Bowling, Darts, Card Games, Board Games all in one cartridge, with Single-Cart multiplayer. Multi-cart’s only perk is Allowing earned Player Icons to be used, as well as using the “special” ink color during in-game chat.

Honeycomb Beat - This game isn’t bad for a puzzle game. My brother says you can find this in discount bins. Gameplay focuses around preventing rising rows of Hexagon tiles of two colors from reaching the top. Tapping a Hexagon tile makes that Hexagon and any other Hexagon touching one of its six sides change to the opposite color. In order to clear a row, all Hexagons within the row must be the same color. Later on, you can get special tiles which have varying effects, such as changing an entire line’s colors, or preventing a certain tile from changing color. Other from this main mode, there is also a Puzzle mode with 200 different puzzles, which consist of making a pre-arranged shape of tiles all into one color within a certain amount of moves (as well as involving the special tiles mentioned earlier). This game is definitely a good deal, especially when it’s $5-10 (and it seems to be everywhere!).

Mario Party DS - The Mini-games are all good and fun. Board mode is unforunately broken, resulting in extreme leads such as one player having 40 stars in a 20 turn game, due to the cheap cost of stars (usually 10-15 coins, sometimes even 5!), cheap cost of multi-dice blocks and the tinyness of the board (resulting in visiting star loctions up to 5 times in one turn!) Single Cart Multiplayer.

Metroid Pinball - It’s pinball with Samus. Apparently there is a Multiplayer mode, but I’ve never tried it. I love pinball, because I love High scores.

(some drawing game?) - I don’t know the title, but it’s very fun, allowing up to 5 players (maybe 8 max?). One mode is Pictionary, except you get odd perks like a sponge erasing your drawing, or forcing you to draw without lifting your stylus. The other mode is like “Telephone”, where one person sees the word, draws it, the next player draws what he thinks that player drew, and so on until the final player, who has to guess what the last person drew! Obviously Single Cart multiplayer, as I do not have this game.

Taiko No Tatsujin DS series - Basically, tap your DS like a drum to the beat of your favorite popular Japanese songs. This game is import only, but I’ve played it on others’ carts of evil.

I am an avid pirate, but I always buy the Castlevania games.

just picked up layton 2 tonight, cant wait to start playing. Even tho its a puzzel game i think the story is what gets you hooked. thats why i played the hell out of layton1, and will prolly do the same with 2.

I got layton 2 yesterday, started it up a bit before class today. I need to replay the first one after because I originally beat it on my R4 and then bought it cuz it was really fun. I hope they don’t take forever to announce 3 coming to the US considering it’s been out in Japan for a while now.

Well:

**Clubhouse Games: **One of my favorite Nintendo-endorsed casual, leisure titles because of its’ strain to keep the fun alive in board games. The game has a comprehensive online chess mode, the thing that a majority of DS Chess games out there cannot produce or even support(especially those high tier games from Ubisoft). The game sports alot of your classical favorites, that you’ve dreaded to play with family members, and basic casino fun. All and all, a great title that won’t disappoint for the casual gamer in you.

**Front Mission: **Even though I just lost this title, I love FM to death because of nostalgia and the fact that this version incorporates characters and plot ideas that are used in later episodes of the series. Front Missions 4 and 5 especially. The game isn’t the bells and whistles and only serves as America’s supposed first brush for the series. Don’t expect much from the TSRPG outside of a great story and a customization mode.

**Planet Puzzle League: **If you were going to start with a Puzzle title, Intelligent Systems’ has the game for you. This game was constantly rebranded for the NA as Tetris Attack and Pokemon Puzzle League, but Panel De Pon still one of the elusive kings of the puzzle genre. Its’ gameplay simplicity brings a great challenge online and off.

Hoshigami: Remix: For a challenging TSRPG, Hoshigami Remix has been considered to be it. Back in the day of its’ 90s Atlus PSX debut, reviewers complained about its’ disgusting difficulty. The Remix brings that back as it sports 3 modes of play and one of the most intriguing and fun battle systems ever to grace the genre. The story and dialogue are not up to par, yet the game serves as a ball breaker for anyone willing to sacrifice cosmetics for a nemesis of a battle system. I expected no less from the birth parents of the Guilty Gear series.

**Mario Kart DS: **I had to mention this game due to the fact it’s just that good. Classical Mario Kart fun for the DS, including various maps from all episodes of the series to date. From SNES to Gamecube, you’re getting them all. The game is still sporting the price of its debut. That’s how high demand and sought out it is! The game is so much fun, that I’d actually play strangers, on the train, in it.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin: A great game. Period. Intelligent Systems brings the War series back in this title with a darker plot. Sure, the setting is overdone to death these days(heck, ever the Power Rangers are doing the Post-Apocalyptic crap now), but the gameplay holds true to the series and upgrades it significantly. What differs the game from the rest of the Americanized episodes is its’ attention to aesthetic detail, more realistic theme, and a less kiddy approach to the main premise. The online mode does alot for the game, too.

**Other Mentions:
**- Ninja Gaiden

  • Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
  • Final Fantasy Tactics A2

Oh I’m sure to replay some puzzles again and at least let some of my friends (or family members) try them out, just for kicks.

I’ve still got a few more puzzles to solve in the main game though.

Man the 3rd trial in Apollo Justice has such a blaring contradiction, it’s stupid.
Also how in the heck do you get your hair to look like Machi’s?! Silly wapanese:looney:
I’ve paused that game and am playing PW2 instead now, maybe this time some of the trials’ll make more sense.

Mine DS Collection:

Now, a LOT of these I still haven’t played yet (some are still sealed) so I’m very backlogged. :shake: I will get around to them evenutally, lol. When there’s a game I want and it’s at a fairly good price, my impulse buy kicks in. I also refuse to buy an R4 or any of the other storage devices. Of the DS games I have played these are my favorites:

Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright/Apollol Justice (series)
The World Ends With You
Ninjatown (LOVE tower defense type games)
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Tetris DS
Professor Layton (will buy the 2nd one soon!)
Hotel Dusk: Room 215
Trace Memory
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
Elite Beat Agents/Ouendan
Zoo Keeper
Brain Age
Quick Spot
Trioncube

I am still expanding my collection though. I am planning on getting Advance Wars (both), GTA: Chinatown Wars, Layton 2, Scribblenauts, Castlevania games and lots others. Still need to get around to playing my other games. Currently playing Big Bang Mini (very good and addicting), and Magician’s Quest: Mysterious Times (feels a lot like Animal Crossing but more stuff you can do). I’ve lost my copy of Clubhouse Games and planning on buying another copy. :c

^ im at about 35 DS games, and i refuse to buy an R4 because i enjoy collecting DS games. I have my wii hacked and psp, and i know if i were to buy an R4 i would stop buying DS games. But you have a great collection. There are still some games i want to try out on the DS, like TWEWY, and i still need to play phoenix wright 2,3 and apollo.
