The Nintendo DS thread v.2

awesome! I really wanted both those games when I saw them and I’m glad they’re both coming out in the US, though I might attempt Devil Survivor in Japanese, but it’s not gonna be easy. lol

IGN Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride review

got an 8.9 from both IGN USA and IGN AU

This is going to sound like a commercial, but I just want to get the word out on this game.

I just want to say that I HIGHLY recommend Retro Game Challenge. Especially if you grew up on NES games. There are only 8 “mini-games” (not really mini, but they are short compared to full out games, though some of them are about the same length as games that came out in the early days), but they’re really fun.

I haven’t completed the whole thing yet, but the premise is that you are sent back to the 80’s by Game Master Arino (look up Game Center CX for more info on the show this is based on), who is angry that he can never win at modern games, and must complete his challenges on classic (made-up) games. Each game has 4 challenges that you must pass before moving on to the next game, and after you complete those challenges, you can play the full version of that game anytime you want.

The games vary from a Galaga-clone, a top-down racer, a platformer (reminiscent of Mappy), a Star-soldier clone, a Dragon Quest clone and a platformer that plays like Ninja Gaiden meets Metroid (on a smaller scale, of course). They are all very well done, and do a good job of being a parody while not mocking the source material.

The translation includes some in-jokes: the back cover says “A Winner is You!”, and you will be asked if you “feel asleep”. You can also browse fake magazines (GameFan, though its not the same as the actual one) to get tips and tricks, and read previews of your next game.

It does seem a little short if you’re only going to complete the challenges, but playing the full versions of the games will definitely add replay. The classic gameplay makes it easy to come back from time to time to beat your score on a shooter, or play through a mini-epic RPG.

This game is probably not for everyone, but I like it a lot. I recommend for anyone who is into retro graphics or old school gameplay, or for anyone who likes the idea of simpler games that are really fun.
I’m pimping this game out also because I want the sequel to come out here, as well, its coming out in Japan in about two weeks!

^I’ll check that game out, though I hate using the word Retro for games…

Yeah, I wish they had a different name for it, but I guess its the only way to put out the vibe of the game for people that wouldn’t otherwise know.

Word from all the PS vets was it played like PSO more than PSU, I wouldn’t know since it was my first trip into the series. As for the character creation, yes most of the characters are fairly chibi, and design choices are fairly limited, but the characters aren’t horrendous looking. The Casts probably have the best overall looks. I don’t know what you’d considering honking but the HUcasts and RAcast shouldn’t disappoint. I actually started with a RAcast for pretty much the same reasons.

And yeah, Photon drops are really easy to get. Oh and Forces might be stronger but they are limited in the amount of spells they can use at the same time due to button limitations. You get a total of six action slots. I don’t know if they were broken in the older games but they didn’t seem crazy to me.

ign doesnt know anything about rpg’s

Start with PSO since it’s got the most fun with BB. PSU has more freedom with the class systems, however it was still the inferior to PSO because of repetitive game levels and misleading title. Universe uses different planets, similar to Phantasy Star’s older games, yet the game is limited because there are only one city per planet. Fight wise, the new system is interesting in PSU because of the special moves that are unique to the weapons used.

The Action palette looks the same as PSO, minus number palette. It’s not that bad. You can only do one spell at a time in PSO and PSU. It’s cool.

PS Zero also uses the same amount of players per party. Something that was similar to PSO than the five man teams of PSU. The Helper AI in both games isn’t that great, with PSU having the failing grade. I felt as if I had to do MORE work in a 3 man team. Still, I wonder how PSZero will play out.

I couldn’t edit his size there the first time I played PS Zero. That was quite disturbing to me since I love editing the size on my Casts. Still, I understand why, though. Some of the early shots of Zero showed that some of the game’s imported elements were taken out of the game because of hardware limitations. The loses are forgivable if it’s helpful to the game. Something else that threw me off was the voices. The CASTs don’t sound like robots.

Thanks for the heads up.

  • I’ve ignored my DS for a bit because of PSO, but I’ll get back onto the wagon with some games I missed.

OK guys, I once again ask for NDS recommendations, I’ve noticed a lot of new good fun games are out, but I tend to forget the name of some titles unless I write them down for future reference. Thanks.

I haven’t tried it yet, but I heard Retro Gaming Challenge is supposed to be good.

There are some potentially good RPGs coming out next week:
Blue Dragon Plus
Dragon Quest V
Fire Emblem
Puzzle Quest: Galactix (Yeah, its a puzzle game, but it does have RPG elements)

Final Fantasy: Echo of Time is coming out next month. That might be fun since its wifi online multiplayer.

:lovin::lovin::lovin: Sweet didn’t know those games were coming out so soon, I recently beat Puzzle Quest, but still got to conquer the kingdoms, hopefully Galactix delivers

Dragon Quest V gets an A+ from 1UP …

:wgrin:

Yep, except that it’s a pure shooter while Fantavision seems more like a puzzle-ish game. The presentation is very nice too.

To put it bluntly, the helper AI is garbage. The damage they put out is crap compared to what you can do and they make no attempt to dodge so they get their ass kicked by bosses. The only thing they are good for is healing you and giving you the occasional stat boost. And sadly you’re forced to use them for the story mode so you can unlock hardmode and get better drops.

Both male and female characters have 8 different voices, and a few of them definitely sound like robots while others sound like humans, so chances are the voices you heard were the human ones

Outside of the PSZ subject, my R4 fried so no more KOF98, Garou, and Castlevania Dracula X for me

You R4/M3 guys may want to wait a day or 2 for a patched ver. of DQ5. I’ma go look for it at shops, though it might come out over here next week

Picked up DQV at a gamestop in this town that I’m at for work. I was lucky, they got two copies in. I had to take the display case though. :-/ Oh well, great game so far! Especially for DQ fans.

gamestop employees are cunts, they’ve never heard of dragon quest. Damn sons of whores

I can’t believe they put Sugoroku in DQ5. That was my favourite minigame in the DQ3 remake.

damn i would of lol’d in their face

The DS lineup this year is mehhh
