The new Smallville thread

A red cape. Very nice. I was hoping there’d be an ‘S’ on it.

I only caught the last 10 minutes of it but that chica at the end was a nice sight to see. Looks like I need to watch this episode and look to see how chloe looked tonight

Pretty decent ep. I loved all the digs at fanboys, though I hated that they copped out on the flight. And Chloe looking up the name of a guy who purchased a specific copy of a specific issue of a specific comic book online in five seconds was painfully contrived.

EDIT:

And, of course, there was a shitload of great comic booky moments. Clark has never been so superheroic.

For a split second there I thought he was going to fly and Lana would bust out: “You’ve got me… who’s got you???”

With acceleration like that, Lana should have died.

Yeah, she would have been human pudding.

Seriously, JUST LET HIM FLY. Or even just let him float down gently. Christ, give a little.

superman has a forcefield that protects everything he is holding.

seriously thats one of his powers.

It’s not even something a forcefield can help, because she should have died from acceleration due to gravity. Consider how quickly Lana went from near terminal velocity to 0 m/s. It would have been exactly the same as hitting the ground/car. Actually, it would be WORSE because Clark’s arms weren’t covering her entire body and would have thusly concentrated the force of impact into two areas. Lana’s spine should have been trisected.

the forcefield negates all that.

No it doesn’t. It’s basically telekinesis. It’s what prevents the air from bothering his eyes when he flies, for example. It is also how he keeps an airplane from falling apart while he steadies it and brings it to a GENTLE landing. It doesn’t protect things from being brought to a dead stop from high speed.

Think of it this way: you have a cheap cabinet that could fall apart if you held it at a 45 degree angle. You have to move it, so you tie it up with bungee cords to hold it together. This is fine if you carry it carefully to wherever it needs to go. But if you throw it off the top of a building, it’s fucked, bungee cords be damned.

To sum up: Lana = pudding.

LOL @ at a show about superbeings being suppressed by normal laws of gravity/physical capabilities/realistic limitations. The same thing did cross my mind as soon as he landed. That got a good chuckle.

Why are SV DVDs always 10 bucks more than everything else? It annoys meh.

I dont why but i was thinking lana falling down was as similar as Gwen Stacy falling down GWB and spider man trying to save her with the web, but instead she died.

That is a spectacular avatar. What would merdoc do, indeed?

i liked how they showed clark saving lana. yeah it was damn impossible, but there was a moment that everybody was thinking “oh shit, is he going to fly!?!?!?” and then bam. he hits the car. apparently they’re still sticking to the no fly rule. i got a nice laugh with it.

lol @ modified Wonder Woman logo.

ah, this will probably be the explanation (story-wise) for no flying, at least until the very end of the series…

It’s a psychological issue…like a “mental block”. Clark rebels against his destiny, and against his alien nature. Kal El is the alien identity, and he is constantly trying to avoid it. Kal El can fly, Clark can’t(won’t.) The writer(s) probably will save it for the finale. Clark will realize and fully accept his destiny and his alien identity…only then, after acceptance will he fly. It will probably end with the final shot of Clark becoming aware of trouble in Metropolis or somewhere else (again. This will be set up by a previous threat to the world he has to stop, prompting his realization of how important he is in the grand scheme of things) in the world…he’ll pull apart a buttoned shirt just like that classic image of Superman…and we’ll finally see the “S” logo(*on the costume). The last shot = a blue/red blur flying off to this new danger/situation. “The End… The Beginning.”

That’s sort of the current explanation. They alternate between “he hasn’t completed his training” and “he hasn’t accepted his destiny.” It all sounds very vague and flimsy to me. He can use heat vision, he can run at mind-boggling speeds, and he can hear a mouse pissing on a piece of felt a mile away, but he can’t fly because he hasn’t accepted his destiny? They’re just jerking the fans off and milking the show for as long as possible.

she wouldn’t have died because all he has to do is negate the upward force with a downward motion of his arms and knees while hes holding her, so she doesn’t feel the full effect. We can see when he landed that he bent his knees all the way down (instead of just landing with his legs locked and straight)

you can compensate this way, try it, jump up and as you land bend your knees and go down, the upward force is almost entirely negated and you feel nothing, with supermans reflexes/superspeed/strength he could have easily negated all the force that would have been exerted on Lana so she basically landed as if on a bed of pillows

so this is what happens, shes falling at velocity G with clark holding her, they have a certain downard force due to gravity when they land. As they hit the ground that force is exerted upward on them at a certain speed through clarks body, through his arms, and then into Lana. All clark has to do is counter that force traveling upwards with another force equal in magnitude but opposite in direction, before it reaches lana, i.e, a downward motion of his body/knees/arms.

pretty sure this would work if superman was doing it, or spiderman, someone fast, strong, and with super-reflexes

i’ve only taken basic physics and yet i can prove this wrong.

according to newton’s third law, F = MA. force equals mass times acceleration. now, with projectile motion, such as shooting a bullet, throwing something off a cliff, or FALLING FROM A BUILDING, there are other equations that deal with distance, acceleration, initial and final velocities, and time. for instance…

Vfinal^2 = Vinitial^2 + 2AD where V’s are velocities, A is acceleration, and D is distance. now the initial velocity will be FUCKING huge since lana’s been falling for a long time. Final velocity must be zero because, after all, they stopped falling. distance can only be clark’s height - in order to stop falling, clark’s feet must be touching the ground to cushion the fall and if the distance is greater than his height, he must be going through the ground. hell, even if you take the height of the car as well as his height, that’s still not too big of a distance compared to the initial velocity. anyways, large initial velocity and small distance means a large acceleration.

large acceleration multiplied by the mass of lana that’d still be A LOT of force and would probably kill her.

basically, clark has to be cushioning lana’s fall over a large amount of distance in order for the force to be small. now why didn’t i say that to begin with, you may ask. just so i can sound smart, obviously.

think of CLARK like a SUPER SOFT SPRING, he just flows with the upward force but downward and negates it like a landing on a coiled spring…but he doesn’t recoil back up like a spring to send Lana flying into the clouds, he just slowly goes back up and its all good, and they live happily ever after
