The multi-tasking thing doesn’t look like a big deal to me. PC’s, the 3DS and Vita already do it. Seamlessly as well, and when it comes to PC there’s nothing limiting the amount of multi-tasking you can do outside of your PC’s power itself.
Coolest aspect of next-gen is that more third-party games will be getting dedicated servers that the publishers/developers don’t have to put up themselves. Then again, both consoles are behind a paywall next-gen, so it should be expected.
Still, having it finally be available for consoles is nice. Not really much of a PC guy and just use a generic laptop for internet, typing papers and that’s it.
Definitely seems like Microsoft has the one up with the dedicated servers thing, offering it to all games for free. PS4 sounds a lot more wishy washy so far as far as what games are getting them.
Yeah, I wonder how the dedicated server thing is going to work.
Steam offers their servers for free. They don’t put them behind a paywall, so hopefully since they’re getting paid for us to connect to their servers with PS4/Xbone, that they make them all dedicated.
Some publishers put up dedicated servers for their games, but they always get shut down eventually. EA games, Metal Gear Online, some Sony 1st-party games, etc. Since next-gen games are mostly going to be on dedicated servers, I’m thinking eventually once PS5’s/Xtwo come out, all dedicated servers are going to get shut down like Microsoft/Sony have been doing(look at the original Xbox as an example, or when populations dwindle, Sony nukes their servers for their games.)
That shit is worrying. I hate that. That’s why I think, personally, P2P is the better option if people can set up their own dedicated servers. Makes it so the online aspect of games can continue to live on, even if the publishers/developers/platform holders drop their dedicated server support.
Yeah I think that’s just a risk Sony and Microsoft know they can take because of the usual near 8 year time span there is between each gen. By the time a new system releases, the amount of people who will legitimately care will start to dwindle as they’ll focus on playing the newer game online. It’s hard enough as it is to get a lot of people playing the same game online for a long period of time. Not a whole lot of incentive for them to do anything else.
Yeah, I see Sony eventually making a push towards all games dedicated if they get enough money from PS+. They obviously see what good it has already done for Microsoft which I generally prefer the online interface for and the free dedicated servers most likely comes from some of that money we’ve been paying for over a decade.
Hey now, they aren’t “free.” You still gotta pay Live fees to access 'em.
I’m gonna be watching the next-gen console releases from the sidelines. I’ll make my decision on whether or not I want to buy one within the next couple of years, depending on how the libraries start to look and what kind of third-party support PC will be getting next-gen.
My brother has a PS4 pre-ordered, but if he doesn’t get Killzone, then I won’t bother paying him a visit to check it out once it’s released.
I meant free to the devs. Not free for customers. Hah.
Yeah I personally would wait on buying a PS4. No way one decent FPS is going to get me to buy a new system. There’s nothing else exclusive worth buying the system for IMO at launch. All of the hyped stuff is coming far after launch so it’s easy to save money and wait for that. Not to mention it’s going to be impossible to get a PS4 for who knows how long if you didn’t already get one.
Xbox One has multiple exclusive games you could be buying the system for so that has me good on that. Obviously buying KI cuz I’m big fighting game and KI fan, but at least there’s multiple other exclusives. Like actual strong games that you must own a next gen system to play (KI, Crimson Dragon, Ryse, Dead Rising 3, Forza 5). The other hyped stuff coming out on PS4 you can also buy on PS3 and 360. If you need your FPS fix Call of Duty and Battlefield can hold you over on next AND last gen until Titanfall hits and supposedly blows the other FPS’ out of the water.
We’ll see if the 1080p issue is just something where devs will have to learn how to use the hardware of the Xbox One or not. If not, then yeah big problem. Micorsoft is stating the ESRAM will give them extra power once devs make use of it. We’ll see there too.
Meh, now that Kinect doesn’t even need to be hooked up in order for the system to function, a Kinectless-SKU is inevitable (hopefully for a cheaper price; they could always bundle in software in its stead). Unless you really need to be on those launch titles day-one and are looking forward to the Kinect 2 features, I’d wait it out on both systems.
I don’t know yet. It’s likely, but Microsoft is still pretty adamant that they want it to be a part of the system. If they don’t get big sales then it will most likely happen, but if there’s some Kinect game that all of a sudden makes people rush and buy an Xbox One, then it’s not happening for a while.
If the Kinectless SKU does happen, it will obviously be for a cheaper price. Just I think Microsoft is going to be pretty bullish about it since it is legitimately better than the all of the other motion devices on the market and want to prove that it should be stuck with every system.
Can’t see myself waiting to play Killer Instinct (and Crimson Dragon is a nice bonus) so definitely day one in there. If Forza 5 or Dead Rising 3 get big accolades, then I may be in there on those also. The Kinect will have to prove itself for me, but if at minimum lets my body be extra buttons for the controller, then I have nothing wrong with that. Hopefully one day motion devices can just be standard in the system so people that want do it can do it and the ones that don’t can just not, but still have the option without having to buy anything separate.
I’m not here to troll. I have at least 45 games for my 360 and regard it as the best console of all time. That said, I’m surprised to see people have already decided on the One. My mind isn’t made up quite yet, as both systems’ launches are looking underwhelming.
So far, Sony’s promise of more power, less money has me leaning their way. I understand why neither system is BC, but if the One was, I’d be going with that system, no questions asked.
Sony’s exclusives have never really rung my bell. This time around, MS’ aren’t really captivating me either.
Just thinking out loud. I’d rather be won over by MS than Sony, for what it’s worth.
I don’t think either platform holders have amazing “must play” 1st-party games. I’ve always preferred third-party. Always. The only time I see someone buy a console for 1st-party stuff, it’s typically Nintendo consoles.
Both launches are looking underwhelming, and we still don’t know a 100% what’s what with either console. Can’t wait to see real impressions once they start to hit, and if the issues with the OS don’t get ironed out, I foresee some serious tears in the future.
I would say overall this launch games and features wise beats the pants off of last gen launch. Last gen launch we didn’t get shit compared to this launch. I’m a pretty niche gamer and don’t like a lot of the “must play” stuff any ways. With the mentioned above Titanfall, I’m just going to check it out of cuz of the hype. I really don’t care that it looks good and the fact that it’s another FPS has me pretty meh. I’ll try it though since it does looks like the most interesting one I’ve seen in a while. Hopefully I’m impressed and it gets me off KI for 2 seconds.
@subt-L Origin has come a long way, it’s not the shoddy program it used to be.
Punkbuster and those weird plug-ins they want to install to your internet browser to play some games, though? Evil. Evil software.
I thought this gens launch line-up and overall gaming library was pretty shit for about two years. After two years, I snagged my current-gen console since that’s when it felt worth it to me. A bunch of good games I wanted to play+2 revisions later.
Yeah last gen was pretty shit for the first year or 2. The launch games were clearly worse (Killzone should be better than everything that came out on PS3 at launch) and until SFIV came out, there was nothing I was dying to play. My brother eventually got a 360 because he wanted to play Virtua Fighter 5 and Halo, but after a while I got tired of VF and was awaiting SFIV. SFIV ended up boring me also and was not what I was hoping it would be so I just stopped playing until Marvel came out. Marvel is fun, but is a very kill or be killed kinda fighter. I know with KI I’ll have fun and hopefully it becomes a solid game that people don’t whine too much about.
Quantum Break and Sunset Overdrive are really interesting me though so I hope they come through and help bring me back to playing something other than fighting games.
Ill play 360/PS4 until the “No Kinect” version comes out. I refuse to pay an extra $100 for a webcam i dont plan on using or even want. And honestly, my xbox setup is pretty close to my bed. I dont even have the required room to use it properly. Somebody tag me when they release this version.
If that story about devs holding reviews hostage is really true*(and at this point, that is exactly the kind of scummy shit I’d expect from this industry’s “triple A” companies)*, then the only way anybody’s gonna get any objective info is from youtubers and word of mouth from friends/trusted associates.
IMO, it will probably be 2015 before any solid consensus could be formed from the so-called “next-gen” consoles. Which look really underwhelming compared to the hype machines behind them
Never was a fan of game reviews any way. I’ll just stick to the word of mouth after the game releases. Oh and yeah, I also agree that between all of the systems we’re not getting the processing power we should be getting. By the time these systems will be affordable for the people who aren’t trying to be “cool guys” at launch, PC will be blowing them away again. In the end though, people buy systems for convenience so I guess people will eventually get over that.
These systems came out at a bad time with the advent of 4K tv’s. These systems basically won’t ever have any 4k games.
Quantum Break and Sunset Overdrive do look pretty cool. The main reason I’m interested in them is because of the developers behind them. Remedy is GDLK(Max Payne, Alan Wake) and so is Insomniac(Ratchet and Clank, Resistance.)
Sucks they’re exclusive, though. I wouldn’t mind playing these games on PC, but I have an odd feeling they’ll eventually hit PC anyway(Alan Wake eventually got a PC port, and Max Payne games have always been multi-plat.)
Rich PC gamers are playing games @ 4K resolution now. I can play games @ 4K, through a “faked” resolution since my monitor doesn’t natively support 4K, but my performance is ass because my PC isn’t ridiculously high-end.
Yeah back when I played other games Max Payne was a regular for me. It definitely revolutionized TPS games and found it kinda weird when Rockstar was randomly the dev for the 3rd game. The old guys coming back with a new IP should bring something pretty innovative yet again. Sunset Overdrive looks like another TPS that should push the boundaries of single and mutliplayer games. Almost like a more action oriented Jet Set Radio. Really digging it.
