-The New Martial Arts Movie Thread-

You missed a lot of classics, maybe only 5 of those would make my top 50…Im a big fan of 70s & 80s hk films but 90s had some gems too…

Damn I have a backlog of about 20 martial arts movies I need to catch up on. I think the last thing I watched was Raging Phoenix.

I’m looking forward to Tom Yum Goong 2 more than any other movie that’s coming out from Hollywood. Except maybe that Mortal Kombat reboot.

5 are you kidding me? Which classics am I missing? I’m dying to know. I do admit to not having Master of the Flying Guillotine. How I missed that is going to bother me for the rest of the night. But I’m curious to know some of the titles that you have in mind.

you are fuckin high if you dont consider drunken master 2 a classic.

How many you want me to list?

Avenging Eagles
Warriors Two
Magnificent Butcher
Knockabout
Shaolin Challenges Ninja
Last Hurrah of Chivalry
10 Tiger of Kwangtung
Shaolin Temple series
Police Story
Pedicab Driver
Way of the Dragon
Drunken Master 1 & 2
The Victim
Martial Club
Fist of the White Lotus
8 Diagram Pole Fighter
Dirty Ho
Born Invincible
Master of the Flying Guillotine
One Arm Swordsman
Fist of Fury
Boxer from Shangtung
7 Grandmasters
Odd Couple
Dragons Forever
Fist of Legend
Spooky Encounters of the Third Kind
Enter the Fat Dragon

That’s just from the top of my head…

From those I’ll give you Warriors 2, 10 tigers, fist of white lotus, one armed swordsman, and odd couple. I know I also happened to pick 5, but I swear it’s not sarcasm. All the others I just think we differ in taste. Great list though.

Not that I don’t like it, but I’m just over the whole drunken boxing thing. The best drunken boxing movie (to me…) was Kung Fu of 8 Drunkards. It didn’t inundate you with only drunken boxing. Lots of nice abstracted forms in that movie as well.

Some of it is true, some of it is complete fantasy to keep the Bruce Lee legend going. The sole martial arts fight in the movie was just present as a tribute to Lee’s fight with Norris in Way of the Dragon - there’s more ballroom dancing than there is any kind of action.

Any thoughts on this list?

Has a decent list but some are undeserve to be there…Kung Fu Hustle, Ongbak 1 &2, The Big Boss, Sister Street Fighter, Return of Street Fighter a couple more in there that are good MA films but i wouldn’t consider top 100…

Im surprise Once Upon A Time in China isn’t listed there, pretty much the most influential film in the 90s…

i can understand why 1 is there…but not two. kung fu hustle?? really??

How do you survive a 100 step heart exploding palm technique?

Take 99 steps!

Meals on Wheels
Kung Fu Commandos
Return to the 36 Chambers
Ten Tigers from Kwangtung

This has been THE INVINCIBLE SWORDSMAN saying:

As for the list… needs to add CTHD, get rid of Ong Bak 2, add Tom Yum Goong, add Return to 36 Chambers/Rooftop Kungfu… I need to see more modern movies.

young bruce lee’s good. Snake and Eagle, Drunken Master and Iron-Fisted Monk are classics. Bulletproof monk was good, even if there was a lot of wire fu, it was humourous. I recommend have a look at the new Expendables 2 coming out, not a kung fu flick but Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Van Damme and even Chuck Norris are said to be starring in it.

Hey guys, i was browsing channels & i found a station that actually shows kung fu movies…Like old school & new school shit! If you have Comcast its called MYX TV…Tomorrow they are showing House of Fury which was actually pretty decent MA film…Then on Thursday they showing Sammo’s Filthy Guy…Also some David Chiang stuff on Sunday!

Right now im watching…Young Bruce Lee haha, its a bruce lee imposter that is fighting Mr. Hans…He’s doing some drunken Snake Style sweet!

Nigeria is on the up

 Didn’t know the Nigerians had it in them.

0:15 is that the Eat the Poo Poo guy?

Thanks for reminding me, i let a Lost Boy Sudanese guy borrow my whole Jet Li collection, dude never gave it back…Not sure if i should ask for it, dude probably self taught & became a shaolin ninja…

:lmao: @ nigerian kung fu sci-fi action flick.

All 3 of those movies will probably be better than Ong bak 2 and 3. Somebody earlier mentioned Kung fu hustle not deserving to be on the top 100. I disagree. Stephen Chow’s movies manage to bring humor to kung-fu flicks. Something that’s not only missing, but greatly improves the movie. That alone should guarantee a spot, at least imo.

Speaking of Stephen Chow, Shaolin Soccer is a classic, though I don’t know if it should be classified as martial arts.

EDIT: Those Stephen Chow vids are hilarious! I died when he kicked the cross dresser in part 3.:rofl:
