Two things.
- I made a social group for Elena fans/players. Here it is.
- Lately, I’ve been looking at 3rd Strike with renewed interest, and as a result, I’m taking up Elena again. Brave Dance is still her best Super Arts, isn’t it? No one discovered anything with Spinning Beat or Healing?
- Nice! I’ve joined it now =)
- Welcome back! Well, healing is as useful as ever against the likes of Hugo hehehehehehe I use spinning beat for fun every once in a while, bu it’s not suited for competitive use. BD works better against most characters, but that goes from each player to choose… if you can handle bd and healing fine, it’s only up to you…
Your thread inspire me too, to use that healing super. I wish elena was in sf4…
I’m wondering if I’m wrong that c.mp xx Brave Dance does not combo if you hitconfirm it at max distance. I’m just curious if it does or if I’m just slow or something. If it’s true then that’s pretty annoying. c.mp is already gimped as it is.
i think SAII is underrated in this thread…
you can link it off the special normal overheads if done meaty, same with mallet smash
and even with sa3 having meter enough to do damage with EX combos, it’s considerably harder to land the c.MP x EX Spin Scythe often in the round, as it gets predictable, and is subsceptible to parry attempts,
Elena gets most of her damage off Kara throws and Brave dance pretty much…
Pretty much. If you late cancel in order to hit confirm a max distance cr.MP into Brave Dance it won’t combo, but, if you are counter poking an opponent’s whiffed/blocked attack and cancel into SA2 immediately it will combo guaranteed.
Hi all. I’m new to Shoryuken. Been using Elena as sub for quite a while.
I’ve always used SA1, even in tournaments. For one, you get your first stock surprisingly fast, so it’s good to have that threat on your side even if you don’t use it. But really, I use SA1 so I can spam EX. Spamming EX Mallet Smash may sound stupid, but the sheer sound of so much EX flying in your face has unnerved quite a few of my opponents. I’ve spammed up to 4 or 5 EX moves in a row on occasion. My favourite is to whiff an EX Rhino Horn only to do another one in the opposite direction.
From what I’ve seen, I play Elena in a bit of a wierd style. I’ll EX Rhino Horn to get in, then mix up between throw, neutral jump, b.HK and Super on recovery. On wakeup, I stand at sweep distance and mix up f. MK and Lynx Tail. Some people have complained to me that Lynx Tail doesn’t look like it’s going to be a low on its startup frames.
I also like spamming b. HK and standing HK. Usually, I’ll keep away, wait for some meter, then suddenly come in and push my opponent all the way into the corner starting with EX Rhino Horn. Usually, my EX Rhino Horn takes jump attempts out of the air as well.
Elena’s wakeup game is a bit underrated. She’s one of the few who doesn’t need to get right up close to do her mix ups, forcing most characters to have to rethink their defensive strategy. The tendency for people to standing block or high parry also makes her low hitting moves surprisingly effective and annoying.
Did I mention I love EX Rhino Horn?:lovin:
lol your main threat should be kara throw in my opinion
when they start to get scared of that, then you can start mixing up with combos
anyone else do scythe mixups as well?
hk scythe, if they block, grab them
if they wisen up, do the follow up
Ermmm yeah, my execution on kara throw is pretty bad so I don’t use it as much as I should.
Ooh. I’ve not tried throwing after HK scythe before. Might give it a shot. Unfortunately, the guys at my arcade started parrying the second scythe hit some time ago so I haven’t been using it much.
Hello everyone here. I’m new to Elena, but I read through the whole thread. Wanted to try the character out because her design seems extremely different from most characters and I like it a lot. I’ve looked everywhere, but could never find pros/cons for Elena. Would anyone mind telling if it’s not too much to ask please? Also, skankin garbage would you be the same person I know from the SaGa Frontier gamefaqs boards?
It’s not that Elena is moving backward that makes her invulnerable to throws during B+HK, it’s that she counts as being in the air during the move. If you want to test this, try it against Hugo. Even his super art throw will not catch her during B+HK, but his anti-air throw grabs her right out of B+HK.
Blocked HK scythe is very punishable, so no.
I’m having trouble doing c.mp, EX spin scythe, lk. scratch wheel. For some reason, scratch wheel won’t come out.
And does she have a kara-throw?
idk how much my input will be valued but
i find that its very easy to surprise people with Elena since she isn’t a common character obviously. Meaning that you can take risks with some of her normals and specials. Unless they’re a complete pro, most wont see the extra part of her qcb+k coming, nor be able to parry all 6 hits. Once in awhile ill use the LK version to try to get out of the corner. The EX version is great as you said, but its very risky against Makoto since if she parries the second hit she can actually dash in and karakusa you, that’s how much time she has.
DP+LK is relatively safe as a wake up move, but most of the time you can use a s.MP since it has decent range and it can hit high and low opponents. Falling short with her hcf+LK/MK can set you up for a quick tick throw if they are expecting it to hit block or something. The EX version is also semi-decent on wakeup since it hits twice, its fast, and it knocks them in the air. I think you can hit confirm this with c.MP but i’m not completely sure.
Elena is definitely a poking character but I feel like she needs to be played as a combination of poke and rushdown. Her c.HK is too good off a block to not abuse once in awhile, but her main threats are fireball spams and characters with good mixups like Oro and dudley who will trash her if they knock her down first. Her stance also affects parrying timing as well, that has screwed me up once or twice. I find myself walking up to players and immediately going with c.MK/c.MP or just poking with f+MK, then they’ll see im poking and try to rush in where ill do a DP+MK or high jump falling HK which does ok since you get only screened
Could everyone give some tactics/strategies at how an amature Elena player whom can’t parry that well should fight/play against specifically Urien?
The person whom plays Urien is much better than I am in general/overall, and is better with Urien than I am with Elena. So, I have a really hard time, defeating him and sometimes just getting in close and hitting him. Urien has very annoyingly long limbs/attacks/kicks/punches, reaching farther than Elena’s limbs/attacks/kicks do, grr.
Urien’s are very predictable online, most of the time you’ll be dealing with random knee-drops, random headbutt-throws, and angle’d fireball spam to catch you jumping. This is because they are always fishing for a knockdown, because they get massive momentum here. Especially from aegis pressure, that shit will win matches no matter how much of a lead you have.
So first off, just don’t jump if you can’t parry too well, it’s going to give him a massive combo plus meter to aegis you in the corner.
You have some better normals, swat his reaching stuff with RH and a liberal use of long distance over-heads will rob him of charge and keep him from abusing stuff you can’t parry.
For the most part, a lot of Uriens I face on GGPO are kind of braindead, so you’ll often see Urien’s play footsies by spamming crouching normals and then doing a random headbutt throw. If they have meter for aegis they will 100% of the time shoulderxxaegis so don’t be near a corner when that happens.
The idea here is: hold your ground in the middle, don’t bother trying to get in his face as they like spam shit. Beat Uriens with fundamentals like footsies and positioning.
I also have a hard time against necro too, his “Dhalsim” long range attacks, make it really hard to get close to him, he’s got wicked combos, and his shock is great AA (anit-air or anit-jumping). It’s really hard to walk towards him with his long range punches and kicks (hard to tell if he’s doing a high or low one, and they come out pretty fast too), but then if you jump, you’re vulnerable too especially with his shock.
any advice?
P.S.
I actually like her SA I, a lot. I don’t really understand all the negative comments about it. I’m just an amature at game, but still I don’t think a lot of the negative comments have much merit. I can’t imagine a pro actually using SA I, and what they could do with it well beyond my limited abilities. wish more people would use SA I, instead of SA II or SA III, so I can see how they’d use it at a higher level of play then I’m capable of doing.
I’m almost able to do some of her longer more damaging comboes now, finally, against the computer, but it’s harder to pull them off in human matches still for me.
And I think I can somewhat do her kara-throw now with some consistency.
Respect the necro. The fact that your opponent is playing as someone so slow means they probably have a lot of patience. I would say don’t jump unless you have him in the corner and you’re trying to keep him there (I recommend jumping straight up or deep into the corner). Empty jumps with parries seem to work to Necro’s advantage. I’ve just about give up on that. For me, it’s harder to jump in on necro than shotos. Especially if he’s expecting it.
His long range attacks have big startups. So they are easy to block (or parry if you’re bold/not online). Be patient enough to get into damaging range. You can probably stuff out some of his long range attacks or trade by using Elenas clk, cmk, and shk (b+hk is kinda random). Once you’re in range you have to use her mixup game. Don’t be afraid to ‘spam’ ex mallet smashes, throws, hks and low attacks.
Cmp will score you a combo, but it’s easy to parry, so I only use it to link if I score on jump in or the opponent is finished a blocked/whiffed attack.
Also, don’t forget. Sometimes, it’s not just Necro. What I mean is, sometimes that player could switch characters and still pound on you like no tomorrow.
