Hey guys, Im a new Honda player, havent played sf4 in about a year. I’ve been doing pretty good with Honda thus far but Ive been having trouble with a few matchups, abel, bison and ryu. I feel like I can’t air to air at all without losing outright or barely trading in all of these matchups. What should I be using?

Also Im having trouble punishing fireballs with ultra, and also knowing what attacks I can punish with ultra. Ive seen videos of Mike ross ultra’ing through fireballs and punishing people but I cant get it to work. Any advice?

tl;dr: air to air for abel, ryu, bison. How to ultra good.

Ok, with the new ultras and buffs, how are the Guile, Rose and Sakura matchups looking now in super?

Things pretty much the same for me.

I’m having trouble getting around Rose’s Soul Sattelite, but I expect everyone without a fireball is.
Against that, if she jumps do EX Sumo Splash to knock her out clean. On the ground, I don’t know.

Jump back/forward MP is Honda’s beast air-to-air normal. It has a huge vertical hitbox that extends from the top of his head down to his feet. It’s especially good against Bison players who like to use headstomp.

When you see Honda players punish a fireball with U1, it’s often a really good guess/prediction. Sometimes they bait the fireball with a blocked headbutt and go directly into U1 before the fireball has been confirmed. Don’t get too caught up in trying to do that. You’ll just mess yourself up. Instead, use it as an anti-air since it seems to work better for that purpose in SSF4. Use it to punish any major mistakes, like a whiffed fierce shoryuken.

Against fireball spammers, you can FADC through the first (non ex) fireball and then continue the motion into an ultra through the 2nd fireball. Aside from using the ultra as a punisher, this was the most common way to land Honda’s ultra in vanilla SF4 (for me, at least). This still works in SSF4 (possibly better, if Ultra I’s speed and/or start up have been improved). Of course, you have to take the fireball speeds and the fireballer’s recovery into consideration. In addition, no matter what, it is extremely hard to do this against Sagat from anything outside of close to short-mid range and against Ryu from anything outside of mid range.

Ok good stuff ill put that into practice. Also I was wondering which(if any) version of the oicho throw I should use for maximum effect. Should I always go for ex throw when I have meter?

you should never use EX ochio for any reason ever. use jab from a far distance and fierce when you’re close.

There is actually 1 good case to use it and thats if you think the extra dmg on it will end the game.

I rarely get an oicho setup as it is. I try neutral jump setups and that sumo kick into oicho but I wont get more than 1 or 2 an entire match

Ex ochio is great for punishment. it punishes you for trying to auto-correct U1 and it punishes you for messing up dash U2.

Anyone knows if LP oicho has been buffed? seems like it has more range… And does ex oicho has something going on for it besides what it had in vanilla?(mp range, hp damage, a waste of meter most of the times)

rose and sak should be fairly straightforward, guile is a different story altogether. dude just zones you out all day :frowning:

only advice i can give for that one is to train him to c.hp your jumpins once or twice and then empty jump U2 from the right range so he whiffs the AA. you need the patience of a saint from fullscreen to sweep range and the ferocity of a rabid hobo when he’s knocked down to win that match.

that actually happened to me today in a tournament, was playing against this guile player, and was punishing all my jump ins with cr.hp, close to the end of the match, we were both neck and neck with our life bars, i did a empty jump in U2, while he tried to cr.hp me. Also I found out that you can easily punish boxers overhead with U2 on block.

Speaking of which though that sagat fight is now retarded, i almost feel sorry for him. If i have any sort of life lead it’s down back city, jump in you eat lp heabutt, low tiger you eat fierce. When i heard about this i over estimated low tiger recovery, he may as well take a snooze after it.

Guile i have no idea how to play just hope that the other bloke sucks more than i do.
Aim for a cross up butt slam thats about all i got.

What happened to Shoryukens in general? they seem to become active a hell of a lot sooner or they are almost all immune to hit on startup.
Scrubby kens aren’t even trying to hit confirm or combo at all it’s walk up srk on my wakeup ffs, thing is it works. Just feel like i’m in a mixup land if i option select the throw i eat srk if i block it i get thrown.
An akuma was uppercutting headbutts on reaction.
I’d fp.hb their jump backs expecting the air fireball they land and srk.
No one plays ryu anymore lolz.

I love how the Sagat match-up has so drastically changed, no longer can people with a “semi decent” (I use that term loosely) zoning game rely on that to win, so its separated the skill gap. Sure, Sagat still has all the tools to win up close too but i swear at least half of the Sagat players out there don’t know how to utilize that part of their game well because they have never had too.

Hey, I’m not that good at SSF4 or anything, but I’ve been maining Honda, and I had a question. I’m not bad by any means, I was in the top 100 in the world for awhile, but I still feel as though I’d get smoked at high-level.

My main BnB has been j.mk -> s.hk or j.mk -> hhs. Is j.mk as good as I think it is? I’ve been mixing that up with timely headbutts and oicho throws. But I only ever throw out a couple oichos because I find I whiff them alot, and I ALMOST NEVER use the buttslam. Is there any way I can expand my game? I can usually go on 5-10 win streaks in ranked but if I come across someone good I get smoked.

sagat honda is 5-5 but no worse than 6-4 if you are losing to sagat tell me why and we can fix that but for now keep holding down back full screen
