These are all very true about Japanese Hondas in general. I’ve gotten into debates about the sumo splashes detriments and benefits vs. various characters and if the character your facing has a decent command grab it’s for sure a no no. I still think they have some decent anti-air bits if you read jumps close and early just not with gief, seth, etc.
I think #6 is supposed to read “don’t burn EX for Oicho . . .” and that is exactly right. EX headbutt is tooo valuable and on the rare super opportunity you really want that bar to kill a match.
As for 7, Japanse Honda’s always do the standing RH finish and leave the one frame links to the combo videos. Although, there are a lot of people in this thread that are good enough to just go for it, I am not, and even if I was that good, I would not go for it against gief. The risk reward is not good enough for me to try it.
Edit: Pretty old video but all the principles pretty much hold true. Probably 7/10 with what SNK said with the wake up but slam being the most offending violation except for the fact that in that case I think it was a good idea.
I’ve punished it before with f.hb on crouch a few times but it is really hard to do. The timing feels like it changes every time. Maybe every blanka ball has a different timing.
not really as soon as you block it you should be making a forward motion i dont think it HAS to be reversal timing but take it to t mode and try it out
thanks for the viper tips guys. i’ll work on the match.
i play against some pretty good vipers in socal.
gief match up is totally 5/5 but i win it most of the time. i wrote a bunch of stuff about it quite a while back but nobody listened to me. all everyone said was "nj fp rapes gief!!!"
lol i’m glad you guys now know that good giefs have 3 or 4 different ways to rape it.
als as for giefs jumping in. if they try to jump in with j.mk, don’t forget you can just standing fierce that bitch out of the air. the worse trade will be even still and sometimes you will just win.
don’t do this too much if they are using j.fp though.
if you zone gief and have a good oki game it’s not that bad. if you get knocked down though it can be death quickly.
and blanka balls can always be punished with head butt, but you gotta basically do the hb while it still looks like you’re in block stun. it’s much easier to do from standing block.
also, don’t forget you can punish blocked balls with ultra as well. and your best bet is to always just cr.jab it on reaction before it even gets to you. no need to even worry about their stupid ball mixups.
skyet was right about this match up. it feels more 7 - 3 to me the more i play it.
I have been burning EX on blocked ball punish lol, although a good Blanka should not be using ball in this match at a range you can react to unless its that lp version to get in and throw/elec mix up. Will definately give it a try - and as a reversal it does work = nice. Sounds similar to the standing block thing in the Honda mirror and punishing HP headbutt with EX heabutt or s.hk on stagiing block - I come across so many Hondas who still don’t know this. Are there any other things standing block allows you punish aside from these and lk tiger knee (changing the recovery frames enough to Oicho on reversal before c,lp or uppercut can come out - its strict timing but it works)?
I am going to take what Mr. SNK has been kind enough to compile for us so far and create a Google Wave for Honda’s matchups. If there is anyone who wants on the Wave let me know and we can all compile information together rather than just having one person do everything.
A “wave” is a “personal communication and collaboration tool” that is currently in beta. If anyone is interested and needs an invite to Google Wave please send me a PM and I will invite you.
Mr. SNK good stuff at Cicada. I watched the valle fight (gouken), and the guile match. I learned a lot, one being that I need to incorporate HHS much more often into my game.
you got em good that 1st round but… you need more lk butt slam against the rufus match up.
i didn’t know he could back dash after u focus his messiah mix up but lk splash after messiah mix up stuffs or trades with any follow he does. period. if rufus pauses and does no follow up, beats it, if rufus does immediate lk, it trades, if rufus delays lk (flash kick), u beat him , if he does overhead or trip, he loses to it’s invincibility.
keep in mind though that if they do the overhead follow up correctly, the trade is always in his favor.
so if you know he’s going to do the overhead (which is what most rufus players will do vs honda) you should do ultra, late FA2, or dash/walk under for a free mk x fp hhs punish.
unfortunately ken i has played that match with me like a thousand times… so he knows that the best thing to do now is just to out turtle honda.
I’ve got an akuma question, not sure if it’s been covered in the 17 or so pages, but I played some games at an arcade today (so it’s not a lag issue) and whenever I tried doing auto-correct ultra AA against a cross-up air tatsu it’d never auto-correct. Is there no way to land this on a crossup air tatsu or do I just suck?
Also, good shit at cicada, SNK. When Mike Ross started taking notes I did as well.
Need more info on your situation. Were you waking up, standing regular crouch or what? I find I have the most success on wake up. Also what is happening when you miss, do you get the block, get hit, etc.? I’m assuming you’re talking about lk tatsu.
Possible useful info on the auto correct front: if you are fighting dictator and he tries to EX Psycho crusher out of the corner to safety you can do auto correct super (any strength) or ultra and catch him as he passes through you. I got the idea from a friend of mine that plays boxer and told me that it works with ultra, so I tried it with Honda. According to him you actually need to put in an extra input so you end up holding back again, meaning towards dictator as he crosses up. I haven’t verified that last input yet but the auto correct is legit for sure.
Edit: Yes you do have to input that direction towards the way bison is crossing up. so it goes charge back, (bison starts hitting with the PS) forward, back , forward, back and for sure the 3p has to come in once you flip.
Mr SNK:
I play almost exclusively against a pretty decent Abel- My additions
EX Headbut beats Abel’s ultra clean
You can meaty his wakeup -yes- when he has no meter. Ex-tornado reversals meaties however.
Careful about close jump-ins on aggressive Abels. Rekka and Wheelkick both auto-stuff close jumpins, and forward medium kick will either stuff on your startup or move Abel out of the way.
Forward kick: Stay out of it’s range. This move starts all of Abel’s mixup options. Poke jab-hands outside it’s range, because he will throw it out. (I think this boils down the whole matchup)
I’m usually holding db in that situation and it tends to not auto-correct and just continues to launch honda forward to the side where the akuma initially was (before crossing up). I’m thinking maybe im not getting that last input in now that you mention that stuff with bison. As for the version of tatsu, it’s whatever version akuma’s use to get that vortex going.
