The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

It’s a shame you can’t read

has nothing to do with the game, it cannot be fixed through the game.
Has everything to do with the TV/Monitor

I read the OP but then I read the more current posts and they say it’s outdated.

The game is fine, the screens are crap - its frustrating man!!!

I’ve got a crazy idea (non sarcastic) what if I went to unity and just asked Capcom what to get?
After all they have to test these games in HD frame by frame they must know something on this.

Totally just did it, I’ll post if I get anything worthwhile.

While the information on comercia panels and the like is outdated. The base issue is still the same. These TV’s take time to process what they are fed and then display it on the screen. Changing the game itself can’t help that.

I doubt you’ll get a definite answer from capcom unity.

Maybe if you contact capcom of japan…

how come i can play any other game and go to some tournament for any other game and not have any problems with execution for any other game then regardless of tv/monitor/whatever?

if i do that with sf4, i get all types of bullshit problems.

You probably just notice it more with SF4, as it’s one of the more timing sensitive games out there.

The game has 1 frame link-ups. So imagine trying to work with those on a display with a lot of input lag.

Hey hardbodycore,

Although I am still researching I have my eye on the LG h30 you recommended. argggg. Kind of also looking around the net today, being black friday. I have a couple of things to buy; like a photo-processing system for my photography that should piggyback as a mame and pc SVIV setup - with maybe a real nice 24 inch monitor. Then go 32 inch on the 360 setup. who knows.

Are you American brother? Happy Thanksgiving / Black Friday…

I

I guess you guys are right. It still sucks though. -_-

Coupla questions…

  1. (asked earlier, no answer): For the Asus (Evo/VH236) monitor, is it necessary to have it in game mode for lag-free gaming?

  2. Is it more important to set the the 360 to the game’s native resolution (in the case of SF4, 720p) or the monitor’s (1080p)?

32LH30 still seems to be good.

Picked up one of these (actually 2 one was for a friend that didn’t make it to standing in line) at Best Buy today. I did some lag tests with it. Keep in mind that my video card has DVI and RGB output so there may be some additional errors introduced.

Also the set’s they had had manufature dates in October meaning it’s impossible to know what kind of panel is in them since we can’t get into the service menu. It’s likely to have an AUO panel instead of the original IPS panel that they came with. Here are my results Compared to my current Samsung LNT 4069F.

On my Samsung I averaged
1080p HDMI 1 “PC” Game Mode Averaged (36ms) [I did the fewest tests of this set up]
720p “PC” Game Mode Averaged (63ms)

On the 32LH30 (Build Date October 2009, panel type unknown)
1080p HDMI 1 “PC” Game Mode Averaged (28ms)
720p HDMI 1 “PC” Game Mode Averaged (32ms)
You can find my pics here http://s143.photobucket.com/albums/r158/Ragnorok64/Lag%20Tests/

There results are consistent with when KVW tested them back in April, that is to say comparable to the Panasonic LZ800 which hung around in the 30ms (2 frames) range.

If my equipment changes or I’m incredibly board, I may do more tests.

I can only answer your second one. Set it to the monitors native resolution. It seems the scaler in the 360 is very fast you you are better off using it instead of relying on the monitor/TV’s unknown scaler.

I’ve a little confusion on the OPs first few posts concerning the VGA port usage. My TV has a Game Mode, and while I can’t feel any lag, I’d still like to be as sure as possible. Does just using the VGA cord that came with PS3 help (assuming that there is no upscaling set to that port) or do I need the aftermarket ones listed in the OP?

I’m pretty sure PS3s don’t come with VGA cables.

You would have to find measurements (or do it yourself) for your specific TV.
VGA could also add more lag.

So here are some pictures I took, trying to see if anyone can help me decipher this stuff. I have 3 sets of pictures I took, but here is the hardware I’m using.

Computer 1
vidcard - XFX GeForce 9600 GT 512MB RAM
display - LG 22" W2252
*connected to display using DVI on both vidcard and display
*connected to tv using DVI on vidcard to analog on tv

Computer 2
vidcard - PNY GeForce 210 512MB RAM
display - LG "22 W2252
*connected to display using DVI on both vidcard and display
*connected to tv using HDMI on both vidcard and tv

Laptop
Old Ass Sony VAIO (its a POS)
*connected to tv using analog on both laptop and tv

TV
Sharp Aquos 46" LC-46D85UN

First Set
These pictures are my main computer (comp1) with my main computer display, with my tv hooked up to my pc.

Second Set
The second is my laptop with my tv connected to the laptop

Third Set
The third is another computer (comp2) hooked up to my main display with the tv hooked up to that pc.

I’m hoping that someone can take these pictures and come up with some conclusion about the tv. I probably missed some information that could be vital to finding out why the tv has input lag when I play on my 360. Hope this helps someone out there. Let me know guys!

These are reallllly good questions. I have another to add as well.

  1. What should the Overdrive option be set to?

You were right, so far.

I hope you’re wrong though because I’m sure they know.
