The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

I’m really thinking about getting an LG W2753V-PF, does anybody else have any experience with it?

I’d assume if they used it for the tournament that they would have done some test but does anybody know if/what they did?

I probably won’t get it for a couple of months but once I do I’ll definitely put up some numbers.

Hi, I just signed up here for this great thread that you all have going. I figured this would be the best place to ask this question since I can’t find many active forums regarding this issue on other sites.

Anyways, I’m also trying to find a good setup that has little to no input lag for both console and PC gaming. What I went and did was put a CRT and LCD side by side, linked them to the same computer in mirror(clone) mode, and ran one of those timer apps that some other input lag related websites have. I took a bunch of pics which I’ll see if I can post up.

Now my problem here is that I can’t really read just how much lag there is between the two screens. Sometimes it looks like the two screens are on the same number (particularly the first and last comparisons) and sometimes they look quite different. I’m not sure if it’s just the ghosting on the LCD or what, but they look to be fairly close from what I’m seeing.

Maybe some of your more trained eyes can help me out here?

The picture is kinda big, so I’ll link instead of tag.
The link: http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy300/RN858/inputlag.jpg

Left side is the CRT, right side is the LCD.

The first and last comparisons look like there might be only a few ms of lag, maybe 1-3, but the middle ones really throw me off.

Thanks for your time.

EDIT: Make/model: ViewSonic/OptiQuest Q22wb

Well, one of two things are happening:

  1. Your monitors have a lot of ghosting. Since one is a CRT and is showing the ghosting it’s probably not that.
  2. Your camera’s shutter rate is too low. If you can speed up the shutter, do so. If the image is too dark, turn off the lights in the room.

It does look like your LCD is holding its own though – what’s the make and model?

shutter speed on your camera is too slow, i have that same problem.

i’m tempted to splurge with a 60" or higher dlp, but i haven’t seen any proper tests done on them. i don’t have a proper camera either to test any of them myself.

i have this monitor. my tests showed either 0ms or 16ms (presumably due to vertical retrace). the viewing angle is pretty shit, but other than that i’m quite happy with it.

thanks for the information…I am definitely going to order the Asus VW246H

Ahh yes, that’s a good point. I should have thought of that before I spent 10 mins doing that hack-job picture lol. My camera isn’t great by any means, just something I picked up along the way. I don’t think there’s an option on it to adjust the shutter speed, so I think I’m SOL as it is now. Thank you for your responses.

Oh and before I forget to check it again, the LCD is a ViewSonic/OptiQuest Q22wb. Pretty old and not the biggest screen out there, but it’s what I have :china:

Actually now that I think about it, does my question even belong here since the monitor isn’t technically a T.V.?

This is largely my experience as well.

With the splitter, you should go from console > Splitter > two screens. We’ve done this and we’ve had no problems with it. Doesn’t lag or reduce image quality (that I could tell).

The performance of the TV should be the same as (certainly no better than) if you had plugged the source directly into the TV. Likewise, the performance of the ASUS should be the same as if you had plugged the source directly into the ASUS.

There is no interaction between the ASUS and the “Random LCD TV”, except that one of the two devices will set the resolution at the source and the other will need to support that resolution. Each device still processes the input independently and with the same amount of lag as it would individually.

Thanks for the info!

Just bought the 24 version of the Acer monitor last night.

Acer H243Hbmid

Played it side by side with my asus. Im pretty sure the performance is the same. Will do testing in the next few weeks.

Did same 1 frame link combo with ryu on both monitor over and over c.lk c. lp c. mk and got it each time. Ill do the clock test in the next few weeks for the benefit of the thread. I still use the asus for gaming since the speakers sound a bit louder and I got no place to connect to audio out of my ps3 but to the monitor speakers itself.

As soon as I figure out why both monitors show a vertical transparent line when maxed out 1080p from my laptops vga connection I can move further on to the tests.

Im sure its not the monitors since one is new and the other one has about 3 to 4 months.
HDMI connection from ps3 works perfect no lines whatsoever.

I narrowed it to 4 possible things.

1)Ground problem - Use a grounding adapter. When I had the ps3 to my old box TV I had it through component and got the vetical transparent line. After searching online bought this and it solved the problem.

  1. Shitty cables - I use both factory included cables from my asus and acer to my laptop vga with the same effect. I dont think it should be the cables unless I need some fancy cables to get my computer resolution to 1080p

  2. Laptop video card - 4 year old laptop with integrated graphics. Maybe it just sucks

  3. Adjust the refresh rate on the monitor. I dont think this is it and I really dont have a clue how to adjust this to make a difference.

When I put to computer to 720p I dont get the lines AT ALL.

Tested LED SAMSUNG:
UN46b6000
UE46b6050
UE46b6000
its all the same model.

HDMI game mode OFF:
Audio 123ms
Video 100ms

HDMI game mode ON:
Audio 42ms
Video 40ms

Edit: Used Guitar Hero manual strumming.
It’s a super TV btw.

The only tests on the Vizio SV420M I have done so far were with a GH smash hits demo, which I just don’t know if I can trust. However, I decided to do my first tests in movie mode with all the fancies on full swing and see how it would do. My 360 is connected via hd component cables.

Movie mode, 120 Hz, 1080p, all options on

test 1 video: 17ms
test 2 video: 23ms
test 3 video: 13ms
test 4 video: 0ms
test 5 video: 0ms
test 6 video: 2ms
test 7 video: 0ms
test 8 video: 2ms
test 9 video: 0ms
test 10 video: 15ms

Audio was always 0ms.

After that I decided to not bother with game mode, 60 Hz, 720p, and options off. I feel like GH is a flimsy way to test tv lag.

Yeah those test seem extremely low but I could be wrong. I’m not familiar with the Guitar Hero tests. Are they done manually where you strum as you hear or see the ticks? Or is it like Rockband 2 where the wireless guitar is held up to the screen and does it automatically? If you’re strumming it’s gonna be very flawed since you typically anticipate the sounds or ticks so basically lots of human error involved.

i purchased the vw246h just recently and have been testing it out. I gotta say, it might be just me but I have a harder time pulling off bisons standard c.jab, s.jab, c.sh > scissors. This is a combo that any bison player is able to do nearly 100% of the time. But with the vw246h i barely get out the scissors half the time now. I don’t understand it. Previously I used the Samsung 2253BW and I was able to get this combo out consistently nearly 100% of the time. Now i can barely get it out half the times. Again maybe its just me… can anyone do ANY input lag test on the vw246h to confirm? Or can anyone with a vw246h do the standard bison combo consistently with this lcd? Very disappointed on my purchase so far tho.

On a 46" lcd would be it better to use vga than hdmi for the xbox 360? will it look virually the same but have better ms?

How exactly to you run the RB2 test?

So instead of going with the Asus VW266H from the local Fry’s, I went with the Hannspree HF257 25" LCD monitor for the sake of convenience (was right down the street at best buy), and the price. got it for $239 early august. I’ve been playing on it for the past few weeks, and did notice there’s a slight lag compared to my crt. My question is, how do you run the test with RB2? Could someone help me out? the video/audio are excellent, now i’d like to know exactly how much lag there is. Im running the xbox via VGA since i have pre-hdmi 360. once i do the test, i’ll post the results here. thanks in advance.

it’s just you. maybe you’re used to the lag on your samsung. and if you’re not using vga then you’re doing it wrong.

Anyone own a Samsung 4665F and know how to minimize the lag as much as possible? i own a 360 right now doing 1080p through hdmi, i just ordered a vga cable, would setting it to 720p have less lag then keeping it at 1080p? does anyone have ms tests of this tv? i dont havr rb2 or a laptop or extra monitor

I can’t help with all the questions in your post, but I do have some info for the first one.

From what I’ve read on this issue, it seems that 720p isn’t always the better option. It turns out that the best resolution to use is your monitor’s native. If your TV has 720p as its listed native resolution, then go for 720p. Likewise for the 1080p. The reason this is true is because of the amount of processing, etc. that the T.V. has to go through whenever it isn’t in its native resolution. More processing = more precious ms wasted!

Not all monitors have easy to find native resolutions though. You may or may not have to go digging through your documents for the T.V.'s manual if you still have it.

Hopefully this helps a bit.

I’m looking for a TV just for this year to play my ps3 on with 0 lag (or as little as possible)…I’ll be hooking up thru component cables. What do you suggest that I buy?? Preferably 32inch range and not that expensive…Thanks for your opinions!!
