The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

  • That’s really odd. Why would the Samsung test worse in Game mode with it’s native resolution of 1080p? That should have less processing than the 720p source. It’s even more surprising that VGA lagged even more.

So im thinking about looking for a cheap tv and just using a vga cable or component cable…like this http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=11019323&findingMethod=rr

any tips?

I see.

Vizio VL420M Results

Cross posted from my post in the VL420M thread at avsforum.com

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1157276&page=3

Okay so after about an hour worth of input lag testing last night I found the following results with the Vizio VL420M display. I turned off as many of the post processing and display improvement options that I could find on the display during these tests.

HDMI @ 1080p
Low - 60ms delay
High - 80-85ms delay

HDMI @ 720p
Low - 95ms delay
High - 100ms delay (terrible, seriously bad)

VGA @ 1600 x 1200
Low - 20ms delay
High - 30ms delay

I’m afraid that I am going to have to return this display to Costco unless someone can post up some suggestions that may improve these tests. I was thinking about going with the Mayflash PS3 to VGA cable or the HD extreme but that is extra money spent that could be used to buy a better TV.

I’ve posted up a quick YouTube video with the results of my test. Please check it out and let me know if you have any suggestions, questions, comments, requests for further tests with this set before I return it to Costco to get a different model.

I was really hoping this set would be the one for me but the input lag @ 720p (Street Fighter 4’s default resolution) is just horrendously bad.

Anyone have a suggestion as far as a low input delay display that I may want to start researching or point me in the direction of? I’m looking for a 42" for around $1k from Costco. Thanks.

2 Questions

1.Is the tv under best solution in the OP still considered the best solution?

2.If it is anyone got a new link? The old one says it’s deactivated.

How did your friend manage to get it to output in 1080p? every time i try the screen goes black. Was he using 360 or ps3?

I also find that a little bit odd. Is there any explanation?

The best regarded I’ve found are the Sharp AQUOS E77 and GP series (<=1 frame of lag at 1080p according to AVS Forum posts, at least on some models) and the LG LH30 series (two frames of lag at 1080p according to posts here and at AVS Forum).

**EDIT: ** Ran some tests on the AQUOS E67 series 40" monitor (LC40E67UN) – it has up to 3 frames of input lag compared to the LCD display of my laptop at native resolution (1080p). My 22" LCD monitor runs just about in lock-step with the laptop (at 1680x1050), so I’ve returned the Sharp. The 40" E67 lacks Vyper Drive (contrary to the specifications posted elsewhere) and does not perform nearly as well as the 40" E77.

He managed to get to output 1080p with no problems with the ps3 using the official ps3 hdmi cable from sony. And as I stated earlier, the monitor has the ability to adjust the ps3’s 1080p picture to a 16:9 screen ratio.

Yeah I’m also curious about the Samsung LEDs if anyone has one. I might get one in the future and I wanna go the HDFury way since the new Sammy LCD/LEDs support 720p with VGA. Also curious how they perform in Game Mode with HDMI.

i recently tested out a sanyo DP19649, all im saying is stay away as this tv has really noticeable delay w/o even doing the rb2 test.

I was pretty close to buying the LG but am interested in the Dynex DX-L32-10A purely based on price since i got laid off a few weeks ago. The closest i can find in town is the DX-L32-10C. Anyone know what if anything is different from the 10A and the 10C?

ASUS VW246H Monitor

I was wondering whether anyone has tested the ASUS VW246H monitor? It has similar specs to the monitor that was used at Evo(ASUS VH236H monitor), so I would assume it probably has the same amount of lag.

Visited a friends house tonight

He had the W2453V-PF LG Monitor LCD.

After playing on it all night, seems perfect.

Again I have the EVO Monitor, got it after countless months of researching so I know what all this is about.

I noticed a trend after reading some info.

Most new monitors with TN panels with 2ms response rate and 16:9 aspect ratio are working perfectly for games through HDMI.

You can see this with the evo ASUS, ACER that was tested in this thread, KSK used this same monitor W2453V-PF but the 27 inch version in the last tournament.

I think i might get the 24 inch I played tonight to use as my computer monitor. I would get the 27 but it doesnt fit on my desk by half and inch :frowning:

Again, sorry for no testing. Just putting the info out there maybe someone can do something with it. Don’t have the resources to test. Im buying this monitor anywayz to use it as my computer monitor so Ill do some lag tests when I get it.

All these monitors seem to have the 0ms -16ms lag effect. Where you can get 0ms lag in the tests then have some images with 16ms. The pictures show only these two numbers which I can conclude its definitely the vertical retrace of the monitor. 1 second/60hz refresh rate = 16.6ms. If you see tests of Tvs that actually LAG you can tell by the pictures its just a bunch of random numbers. There you have it.

RANDOM QUESTION

What happens if I use an HDMI splitter To clone the image from my asus to a Random LCD TV.
will the TV clone the asus? Can I play on the TV with no input lag since its cloning the Asus?

Cano

so running a 360 through my samsungs vga should look the same as hdmi but have less ms than using the tvs hdmi port?

RB2 Test Result for VW266H

I’ve got VW266H today, and ran RB2 test for input lag.
For HDMI input, it constantly gives 15~22ms lag regardless of game mode, or not.
I’m wondering if any other ones of Asus LCD gives exact 0ms input lag using RB2 test.
However, compared to 60~70ms laggy Samsung HPT5064 PDP, I feel a lot more comfortable with it.

Joyfull thanks for testing this monitor.

Did you do a test with the component or VGA cables? It would be great if you can post the results. Thanks!

Actually, I’ve connected PS3 and VW266H through HDMI, and PS3 is set to 720p.
Is there anything I can try to improve input lag to close to zero?

Ahh ok I thought you were using the:smile: X360

With the RB2 (PS3) test my VH236H usually shows between 3-10ms in standard mode. Game mode seems to be actually slower… I get between 12-18ms in game mode. I have it hooked up though HDMI haven’t tried vga at all maybe I’ll get around to that sometime.
