The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

The demo I got wouldn’t let me use the lag test…?

i used the Metallica one, you have to start the demo then go to the options.
what about rockband, anyone know if you can use the demo to test the lag or a pad/stick with full version

Oh ok cool, was trying with Smash Hits and it didn’t let me go into options at all.

A built in webcam isn’t going to cause lag. >_>

This isn’t in the same line of monitors that were Evo tested, this model is older. The weird native resolution and the interlacing might have something to do with it. Try setting 360 to 720p. No reason not to try a VGA cable as well if you can, they are cheap on ebay.

I want to test a monitor for lag by doing the dual display and taking pictures of a timer test but the video card of the computer only has dvi out and the crt monitor is vga, would a vga to dvi adapter add lag?

It should not because DVI puts out both an analog and digital signal. The DVI -> VGA adapter simply moves the DVI analog pinout to match the VGI pinout. (There is no guarantee that your video card, however, is lagless for its analog output but that’s not particularly likely.)

I would assume that the 0ms input lag you got were after it was calibrated?

Basically the game was compensating for the TV’s input lag and helped correct it to make it playable after calibration. Fine and dandy for Guitar Hero, but in games like SFIV or BlazBlue which don’t have any type of calibrating setting, that’s when you find out the TRUE input lag a LCD/Plasma has.

Of course, I could be completely wrong about this as I"m still a HDTV newb. But, my logic sounds reasonable.

As somebody new to the HDTV world (and about to buy my first HDTV), I’ve been doing a ton of research on this as well. To the best of my knowledge, there’s no official HDTV input lag test results page.

Since manufacturer’s don’t actually tell you the amount of input lag their TV has, it’s pretty much up to the consumers to do their own testing and post results. Then of course, these results are scattered all over the internet for you to try and dig up.

I’ve had the most success at avsforum.com in regard to getting info. Try checking these links for information on the Panasonics:

Anyone here having any types of problems with their ASUS VH236H ? I deeply appreciate all your help. I wanna buy it this week !

Okay so here’s my dilemma. I’m using a Vizio SV420M and a first gen xbox 360 with no HDMI out and 13g HDD (some of you probably never knew there was a 13g HDD). So I’m using the standard component out.

I feel like I have 3 options, and not really sure which way to go.

1.) Make no changes. Just keep using what I’m using now, as it seems to be pretty decent.

2.) Buy a new Xbox 360 Pro and transfer data (leaning towards transferring via memory card), and an HDMI cable.

3.) Go DVI some way or another.

Spending the money isn’t a huge deal right now. While I don’t necessarily NEED a bigger hard drive, it sure would be nice to be able to install more than just one game to the hd at a time. On another note, I’m largely unaware of how much of a difference HDMI makes compared to component. I do have my xbox set for 1080p atm and it seems mostly fine.

Oh, and I think the HDTV lag tests on the Guitar Hero demos don’t show real results.

Those tests don’t work that way, they test your reaction versus images on the screen and assign an ‘offset’ value for your TV. They don’t test against a current offset.

What IS possible on a manual test is that the person testing is used to anticipating the timing, because there is no way for the game to give feedback on whether their timing is correct (down to milliseconds especially). The game can’t tell you that you are timing your button presses to exactly when you see it on the screen.

These tests will never be accurate for that reason, but they are fine estimates. Having other people try the test and see the results would certainly help. Even without that though, they can make good estimates. Getting 0ms is still a very good sign. People that dismiss these simple tests are making life harder for themselves.

Orochi: To me it sounds like you just feel like throwing away money. Personally I’d see if a friend can bring around a 360 and try out their HDMI to see what it looks like on the TV.

Hey guys. I don’t know if this site was linked yet, but it’s a GOLD MINE for input lag results on various monitors.

I think this should be added prominently to the first post.

This is a good starting place. There are a couple of problems though:
-That guide seems a tad outdated… or at least they are missing a lot of good monitors.
-They don’t include scaling performance. If they ran tests at 1280 x 720 the site would be fantastic. Most current gen games run at this resolution.

I want to buy the Xbox360 VGA cable, since I notice a significant response time when I use the TE X360 stick, I just want to know if it will be a legit purchase (little or no response time, or problems), so I don’t waste more money. I’ve read the first post, I just want input from other sides.

And if it matters, I use a Samsung Series 5 1080p.

Hi Poonage,
I have a 37" LG LCD with 1080p and HDMI In.
Also it has 360 outputs.
I will Check the delay and let you know.

Does anyone have actual numbers in regard to the Asus 25.5" monitors? The component input appeals to be me but would like some assurance that they’d be equivalent to the official evo monitors.

A few pages back, somebody gave it a strong recommendation. I think it’s a fairly safe bet, but no numbers no.

Is there a lagless 32" yet?

So I was wondering would anyone be able to determine how bad an Input lag of an LCD screen with 6.5ms would be?

I was most likely gunna use it for Blazblue. =]

Thanks aton

Ive received the Asus VW266H monitor last week and Im quite satisfied with it .
Fortunately It arrived to me without any dead pixels

@ Wkwong11, your review of the asus vw266h is very accurate I can say now. Great job & thanks again, as It did convinced me to order this monitor based on your review.

As promised in one of my earlier posts heres my personal opinion:

The monitor stand exceeded my expectations its non wobbly unlike my older Samsung 2032 MW monitor. Personally I find the 2032 MW a piece of crap for gaming. Attaching the stand was a breeze, it just clicks in Once the stand is attached to the vw266h you can adjust the screen only vertically to a degree I guess around 20-25 up and down For horizontal adjustment its necessary to lift the whole monitor, which is easy to do as its not too heavy. Other good thing what I like about this monitor is that its possible to Vesa mount it to a wall.

Sound Quality:

The sound exceeded my expectations as well. And I 100% agree what Wkwong11 wrote about the sound quality in his review.

Image quality:

I got my Xbox 360 elite connected with HDMI and image quality is nice. To bad Im unable to test out component as my component cable is broken.

I also own a ps2 slim + component cable, but have not yet tested how it performs on this monitor, same with connecting my pc to it. Have lack of time available currently as am in the middle of moving to a new apartment.

When playing SF4 & SSF2THD for the first time on this monitor I immediately felt that its much easier for me personally to time and pull of combos. I also didnt notice any ghosting either. I also didnt notice any difference of input lag or ghosting by selecting the various presets this monitor offers, like scenery mode, theater mode, game mode, night mode, normal mode. I also tested call of duty 4 modern warfare and it performs very well.

However above is my personal experience, it may not apply to yours if planning to purchase this monitor.

**Wkwong11 wrote:
As far overall performance, the blacks aren’t quite as black as I would like. Some bleed out from the CCFL backlight. But nothing you wouldn’t expect from such a large monitor.
**
I agree with Wkwong11 about the blacks. However I do like the factory preset theater mode out of the box quite well. I still need to spend some serious time to calibrate this monitor to my liking. Other thing I like about if you try to calibrate and you goof up its very easy to reset this monitor to its original selected mode calibration.

My monitor got some bleed out as well, but I hardly notice it during gameplay, personally its not a big deal for me.

Other thing I noticed is some noise when screen is total black. It might be my HDMI cable ?? currently I have my xbox 360 elite connected with a Monster HDMI cable. I have 2 other hdmi cables around and still need to test if those other cables give improvement. But overall when playing SF4 & SSF2THD I dont notice the noise so its no real problem for me personally.

Viewing Angle:**

About the Viewing Angle of 170(H) / 160(V) this monitor is advertised with I personally find it not impressive as I do notice image difference when viewing the monitor at an angle of approx 45 degrees horizontal or vertically. Image quality is good when you center yourself in front of this monitor. The limited viewing angle of this monitor could be annoying if you sit or stand close to it at a distance of less than 1meter with 2 or more people.

Personally this wont be a problem for me as am going to create a dual display setup in my new apartment in the coming months. I already have ordered a second vw266h and a 2 way hdmi splitter which should arrive in 1-2 weeks time.

All by all this monitor is worth to get. Definitely if you are able to get it for the price of $ 260 Wkwong11 was able to get it for. Cheapest I could get this monitor from a reliable shop in my country was 345 euro.

I hope my personal impressions of the asus vw266h so far will be helpful, as we all gather in this tread to create the best personal gaming experience possible for ourselves.

Once Im settled and got more time available to test I will definitely update my future impressions & tests of this monitor.
