The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

Will using hdfury on a lcd monitor reduce input lag or does it only have an effect on HDTVs?

Same way as you’d test it normally really, but change connections. If you have a 360 you can just do RB type tests and change cables to see. If PS3 you’d need a HDfury to test. Otherwise you could hook a laptop up to it with clone displays and do the camera speed test on both connections if possible.
One thing I’ve noticed from reading responses in this thread, is that most people who do test their VGA on big sets notice a large difference, so hopefully if it’s there it should stick out like a sore thumb from any form of testing.

SFPlayer: I’ve pretty much convinced myself that I’m buying this display because component input it important to me (recording purposes for PS3). I won’t be able to afford it for a good while though. If you could od input lag testing before/after you buy it that would be great haha.
As for the inputting splitting issue, splitting input will never lag unless there is processing involved along the way. The thing to worry about with splitting is image quality, more so with analogue signals I believe. There was a setup with a HDMI splitter at the Ozhadou Nationals (OHN) last weekend that had PS3 > multiple splitter > two HD displays and a HD projector. It was a pro setup and it worked perfectly well.

do HDMI cords have any affect on lag?

Sorry for the delay to those who PM’d me questions. All replied to now.

No.
It’s possible that long cables might degrade image quality or something to that affect, but it won’t introduce lag.

I read the entire thread and perhaps I missed it, but do flat panel computer monitors suffer from input lag? I would have thought not, since I doubt they perform post-processing to the same degree as a HD TV, but I wanted to check.

For example, I believe this is the monitor used at Evo this year. What properties should I be looking at in selecting a monitor to run with as little lag as possible with a PS3.

Many thanks!!

Thanks Zanken for your very helpful answers to my questions.
To be able to record your matches is something i didn’t think
about yet, but it got definitely my interest as well as i do believe
it could improve game play over time.

Strongly thinking of getting the Asus VW266h monitor, but only
one to start with to see how it is before getting a second one.
Also need to find a shop in my country which offers a not satisfied
you can return it guarantee.

About testing the input lag of this monitor it’s a problem and results
will not be accurate as i don’t own a CRT monitor.

as soon as i find a good shop to get the Asus VW266h from and i
received it i will report back.

I’m picking up a VW266H monitor today. If you guys are thinking about getting one, get it soon as the $30 MIR is only good till end of the month (unless you wait till it gradually comes down in price).

I don’t have RB2 test method, but I’ve been pretty accurate using the RB1 manual test. I can’t do the dual output method either since I am getting this for the component input. I already have a lagless plasma when using VGA input, but my recorder only records through component.

I’ll post my detailed findings tomorrow.

Note: I do notice lag when it is obviously present. IE: Older Samsung DLP’s have about 60-70ms of input lag through my test method. Game mode on. I also had a old 42" Dell Plasma which have about 40-50ms on component, but zero on VGA.

I plan to build a custom Vewlix style cabinet like a few people out there have done and I’m looking for a 32" LCD TV to go with it. It will be used primarily for SF4 on PC, so I will be using either DVI to HDMI or straight HDMI.

Has anyone purchased a 32" LCD TV recently and done lag tests on it? I’m looking for an LCD that has as low input lag as possible. Any suggestions would be fantastic.

Hey, I thought I’d post here since I don’t think this really warrents my own thread but… I seem to have pretty much no frame lag on GGXX AC+ using my PS3 and HDTV. I can FRC pretty much all of my moves normally like playing #R on the PC. I don’t really know why it works so well since almost everyone says the PS3 has some sort of 3 frames of lag issue when playing PS2 games but it feels fine to me.

My PS3 is the 80 GB one and my HDTV is a Vizio with an 8 MS response time. I am also using an HDMI cable and progressive scan mode for the game. I read on the first page of the topic that this response time was “ideal.” But I don’t know if all this is a fluke or maybe that the time playing on the PS3 has affected my brain.

Then you obviously didn’t read it correctly. The first post states that response time has NOTHING to do with input lag. The fact that you don’t notice it doesn’t mean anything.\

btw, does anyone know if using hdfury on a lcd monitor reduce input lag or does it only have an effect on HDTVs?

That’s a different response time, he’s talking about the response time that’s apart of the advertised specs on a monitor/tv. That response time has to do with ghosting, or images trailing. Like when it says 5ms response time. But you’re right, just cause you don’t feel it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Just finished testing out my new VW266H!

Using the A/V sync test in RB1, I conclude that this unit has zero lag. There is a “game mode” as well. The game mode was on during this test. I didn’t test it without game mode. I also used a splitter to compare with my older Dell plasma that I knew for sure lagged about 40-50ms with component connection. Just using pictures to gauge the difference in game, the VW266H is clearly faster.

I am on Xbox 360 with component cable connection. I’m sure the HDMI should have no problem as well. I’ve also hooked it up to my Hava Platinum HD and it is still lag free.

As far overall performance, the blacks aren’t quite as black as I would like. Some bleed out from the CCFL backlight. But nothing you wouldn’t expect from such a large monitor. I got mine with zero dead pixels. The stand was very simple to put on. It just clips in. It has inputs for RCA audio as well so no adapters needed to hook up your 360. The speakers are 3W speakers. Definitely nothing to brag about there, but they aren’t as bad as I thought they’d be. No bass though. It does have audio out so you can hook up a decent set of computer speakers and subwoofer through the 3.5mm jack.

It’s also very light at 17lbs so if you need to move your set up frequently, you won’t even break a sweat.

Got mine for about $260 after $30 MIR. Great bang for the buck and WAY bigger than the VH226H. Definitely an A+ in my opinion.

It’s not response time issue, it’s a scaling issue.

GGXX on progressive scan mode runs at 480p. the scaler built-in my Hitachi LCD 42" sclaes to this resoution VERY QUICKLY. Hence, I have no noticable lag too with GGXX AC. (I play on my PS2, using a YUV cable.)

I also have an IO-Data LCD TV (32"). This one is pretty cheap stuff… the scaler must be shitty, because timings in GGXX (same YUV connection) seem to be completely fucked up (absolutely unable to TK some moves, FRC on jam’s throw, and most of the links).

So I guess you are just lucky you bought a TV which scales to 480p pretty quickly.

I have no idea about Vizio TVs though, they are not available in Japan, and I have never tried to play GGXX on the PS3.

Hi guys,

I bought a bravia w5500 the other day (before reading this thread) to find it has really bad lag problems. Game mode helps a bit but it’s still noticeable.

I got a wii/ps3 vga cable to try fix it and i’m having trouble getting it to work.

-I plug the component cable in and get b&w picture
-Set ps3 settings
-Plug vga in

When i select PC from tv menu I get picture (with really bad colours) and picture is not centered. Then if I go into sfiv a message pops up saying: unsupported signal - Change PC output settings… Or close to that message.

Also there is no sound and I cant see how I will be able to get sound??

If someone could help it would be much appreciated

Cheers

Looks promising… I might grab the 32 inch to try it out

Thanks wkwong11 for posting your test results and your opinion
of the Asus VW266H. It finally convinced me to order one as well
today.

Congrats that you where able to get it at a very sharp price for
$260 = 187.

Cheapest price I could order it from a reliable shop in my country
including shipping was 345 = $ 490 unfortunately. Well I could
order it overseas, but high shipping costs + import tax + possible
3 weeks hostage by customs here ( happened to a USA Gamecube
system i ordered in the past ) and long delivery time + the risk
of getting a broken display is not attractive.

It definitely makes clear that if you take gaming seriously,
this country I live in the wrong place.

When I receive the Asus VW266H sometime next week
I connect my xbox 360 elite over hdmi and post my
opinion here, or maybe we can create a new topic for
Asus displays here at SRK?

Ah, I see. Yeah, Vizio is/was one of those “Just coming into focus” brands. Their TV hasn’t given me any problems yet so that’s good enough for me. The model I have is the VW26L. Sorry to hear that about your TV though, not being able to even TK stuff with that one must be pretty annoying.

Although I did notice a slight timing difference in #R on my JI’d 6FRC6 HCL timing(even though people say the timing is exactly the same), like I could do it a little bit faster on my PS3 but on the PC I’d have to delay the input a little tiny bit. Yet I could pretty much FRC Anti-Depressant Scales the same way.

I just recently purchased the LG 32LH30 32" model and did some input lag testing on it.

The results came out to be a constant 31ms (2 Frames) of lag on both hdmi and vga. I tried in multiple resolutions on hdmi and vga and the results were all the same with the lag of 2 frames.

None of the image enhancers added to the input lag and still remained the same, so you could either have it on standard/vivid mode with everything switched to “ON” or have it on PC mode with most of the advanced picture options turned off. It wouldn’t make a difference.

I didn’t do any real testing on the component or composites, but I did do a guitar hero 2 test on them and came out around the same results of 30ms. The tv does not have any s-video either if that matters to you.

Picture-wise, this tv looked amazing. To me, it was just about as good as a samsung tv. It’s probably because its a IPS panel, which are used for photo editing purposes, so it has awesome detail. And the price is really good, only $600 at most places.

This by far beats most samsungs and other tv’s in regards of picture quality, price, and the input lag, but I think samsung’s lnxxa650 series still beats this one with their godly vga port and hdmi2 pc mode. So, if 2 frames doesn’t bother you, go for it. SF4 was still playable for me, but I ended up returning the tv because I just didn’t want any lag at all and got the evo asus monitor instead and saved more money.

Hey, Thanks for that!.. I might try it out and see how it goes. Duno if i can live with a small PC monitor.
