The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

I also just ordered the evo monitor. :tup:

So I’ve been reading through this thread a lot lately and though it’s answered a lot of questions theres still quite a bit more I have…

I’m in the process of looking for a new screen to double for TV and my 360. I noticed a lot of you guys are going with computer moniters, but I was actually looking for something a little larger for my room, a 32" would be perfect. But I’m a little unsure about the HZ and gaming…

When I bought my parents their LCD I spent a little more on a 120HZ version just becuase my dad watches sports and I was able to notice ghosting on the 60HZ version. Is this an actual problem for gaming systems? (ghosting) I noticed that someone stated the 360 put out 60HZ at 1080P via HDMI so it sounds like you wouldn’t see any ghosting at 60HZ? and essentially upgrading to 120HZ would be useless? Is my reasoning wrong in this?

And also VGA vs HDMI, is there a big video quality loss with stepping down to VGA? I’d like to use HDMI, but it seems as though I may be a bit limited in choices when looking for a 32" 1080P screen. So I’ll probbably have to choose the least laggy TV instead of a Lagless TV… Either way I could use VGA but I’d really like to keep the IQ and have something near lagless.

I’ve been shopping around, but does anyone have suggestions off the top of their heads?

My evo monitor arrived today and I can confirm that it’s awesome. Mine came from newegg with no dead pixels. :lovin:

I’ve got it set to game mode and the following hookups:
pc -> dvi port
ps3 -> hdmi port
x360 -> vga port

Everything looks great, no lag, and 1080p rocks. :tup:

Hmm having a problem with the Sharp (LC32GP3U) I bought recently, sometimes when I’m playing the screen will just go black and then after 2 secs the picture will reappear.

I have no idea if this is the right place to put this, but hopefully someone can help me out with this.

Also, some people wanted Tests for the TV, what would be the best way to test it?

Anyone have experience with Panasonic in regards to HD lag. I might get one soon.

I just get a Samsung 2333HD monitor, and I haven’t note any lag with my PlayStation 2 straight connected trough component cables, I been playing 3s since 2004, but i been playing to much damn 2df that am not sure if is just that am so use to play on lag, does anyone else has the same monitor than me?

I’ve also just ordered the 24" Evo monitor. From reading the thread, I should be hooking this up to my 360 using the official MS VGA cables, right? I was thinking about just going HDMI to HDMI, but apparently there’s still lag if you use HDMI…

So, if the VGA cable setup allows 1080p display AND practically lagless gameplay, what (if any) is the actual advantage to using HDMI? Is it worth it to upgrade? I mean, not being able to read the freakin’ SF4 fonts on my CRT is annoying, but if the tradeoff is noticeable input lag, I’ll deal. I’m pretty confused to the point that I’m about to cancel my order and just run back to the CRT I currently play on :sweat:

Also, a related question about HDMI: do the HDMI cables really matter? I was just gonna get some $10 cables off amazon that had all types of good reviews, but I see the official MS ones run for like $60. What’s the deal with that?

A great thread overall though, guys :tup:

I’m connecting my ps3 w/ an hdmi cable I got from monoprice and haven’t noticed any lag. At evo they plan to connect ps3’s to the monitor via hdmi, so I’m sure you won’t have to worry about lag over hdmi on this screen.

First part sounds like a question for Sharp.

Best way to test:

Basically hook up a CRT and your TV to a computer, clone the display, and snap pics with a camera set to the highest speed. Take several pics over a period of time, the more the better. Share your results here.

Rock and roll, I will be posting up results for a Samsung LNT3253HX once I get myself all situated.

So yeah I got the Evo monitor in the mail and well…I got what I paid for. Was hoping I got lucky but I got a defective one that someone sent back. So I’m just going to send it back for a refund. Mainly the issue was there was a white line going across the top of the screen after you played for about a minute and then everything would start to create a faint afterimage of itself and make things very distracting to the eyes. I could tell that the screen was lag free just through the small play I did so if you’re buying an unopened box expect to have a good time.

Thanks for the response, however my laptop doesn’t have S-Video, is there anyway else I can test since the only other CRT TV I have doesn’t have HMDI or Component (It’s 10 years old :sad:)

Good to know, :tup:

Evo is running the 23", not the 24", right? I went with the 24 because I didn’t mind paying a little more for the extra inch. Does anyone know if the 23" and the 24" perform the same though? If not I’ll switch my order over to the 23"…

PS - liking that Earthbound av.

Double check just in case, some times the S-Video port looks like a PS2 port at quick glance.

In response to your Sharp LCD’s HDMI input giving out for half a second or so, it happens on my Samsung too. I will see if I can find anything on this and post about it later.

Nope, My Asus doesn’t have S-video, I’ll check my Toshiba, for that one.

By the way, the Sharp is giving out on Component, not HDMI.

EDIT: The Toshiba does have it, just need to get around to getting a cable, I should have it up by this weekend.

Thanks

Yes, evo is using the 23" version which is why I chose it over the other sizes. I’m not sure where you bought yours from, but looking on newegg, the bigger size appears to have a worse contrast ratio and slower response time:

23": http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236059&Tpk=asus%20vh236h
23.6": http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236052&Tpk=asus%20vh242h
(click the “specifications” tab)

I got mine on Amazon, $215 shipped, but probably will take forever and a day to get here.

I saw the specs of the 23.6, but the one I got was the 24" (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236048)

Contrast ratios + response rates look to be the same between the both of them. (20000:1 ASCR, 2ms)

Just wondering if anyone that already has the 24" can attest to its performance versus the 23". Tough question, but I figure this is the best place to ask :sweat:

Well, I don’t know what happened, but I am now playing my PS3 on component instead of HDMI also.

We paused for some reason in a match, and I popped over to the TV to show my friend the lag between the TV and my speakers. I turn the TV up to 30 while I had my monitors on, and my screen starts emitting this blue pixelation all over the screen. This would flash on and off, but in the end, stayed that way. I don’t know what happened, but I will figure it out hopefully tonight…

Oh, btw, my TV doesn’t flicker in Component, or hasn’t yet.

Wow…

So I went out and bought that VGA cable for my 360 in hopes of using it on my monitor (Samsung 2443bwx) I couldn’t find out if it supported 1080p or 720p even but I decided to give it a shot. Fired everything up and BAM looks terrible. No way to change the settings on my moniter for some reason, and due to that it was stuck at 640 x 480 :wtf:

I figured, meh my monitor must just blow… So I plugged it into my TV (52" 1080p LG LCD) and while it doesn’t look horrible it is FAR from sharp and crisp. There was simply no comparison to using an HDMI cable.

I think I’ll stick with HDMI as I can’t even tell if it’s laggy or not. I’ve yet to do some testing though…

Do you know how it compares to a Component Cable because it seems like I may be stuck with VGA due to my issues with Component and a lack of HDMI on my 360.

Also, I’m trying to figure out how to test my Sharp since it doesn’t have S-Video, so I may have to invest in an HDMI cable, which would delay me testing it for a bit since I would have to go out and get one.
