The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

Is this shit with 240 hz going to mess up gaming nowadays?

There’s a $3,000 Bravia television I want to buy because things animate / refresh so damn smoothly on it, but I’m wondering if games will be utterly unplayable on it or whatever.

Am I being ignorant or do I have a case here?

haha.

I haven’t been following the whole 120hz 250hz stuff at all, but from what I have seen, sets that have this on do lag. I have no idea whether the extra refresh causes it or just because they are high end sets with lots of image processing. It’s one of those things you’d need to read through some of these long arse threads to get an idea on what other people have come across with them.

gibbous: Thats a great monitor you go there. I personally bought the monitor being used at Evo but I had this Acer monitor on my hand and on my way to the cash register one day since it was the closest I could find to the evo monitor here in a local store. However Comp USA return policy didnt appeal to me much since they would test the monitor if it was working alright and wont allow me to return it. I was going to buy it to test lag and then give it back to the store if it didnt work right.

More thread related,

After judging your tests this seems to be the same result they would get for the EVO monitor (Asus V236H). If what Ponder states is correct the 15 and 16 ms of lags is the vertical retrace on the monitor so you basically have a lag free TV. This would make it a GREAT option for those who dont want the ASUS.

Not sure this is the right place to put this or not, but the Vyper series of TVs from Sharp on sale at Best Buy Canada. They’re down from 1200 to 799, I decided to get one myself, so I finally have a solid TV.

Here’s the link if anyone wants to check it out: http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10123460&catid=23244

They also have it in Red, but not in Black.

Seems that way to me, whatever you choose to call the vertical retrace. I’m just about ready to pull the trigger on the 24" model.

Please do some tests and post results.

Will do, when it ships here

I would also like to see the results!

this t.v any good? my budget is 400$ and i wana buy a hdtv when i get paid this week.any thoughts on this t.v?

Doesn’t support 1080p.

I bought a Samsung T260HD. Lovin’ it so far.

wow, HDTV lag denial is one of the most interesting phenomenon ever.

nice t.v but i want atleast a 32inch. and i doubt ill need 1080p for blazblue.i think bb in ctf is 720p and it still looks nice

Im not sure if id start a new thread or not, so ill try it here first. Ive bought my first LCD screen, a Samgung T220. Ive used the DVI connector and now im trying with the VGA one, but it dont helps that much. Im having problems reading on the monitor, its really a pain in the ass compared with my 17" CRT. Are there any basic config to help on making things readable on lcds? I have no problem reading sites with dar backgrounds asthe srk forum, but to read a black text over a white background makes me feel like im with sand on my eyes.

When I scroll a page (on any direction) i Also feel it weird, cant be the refresh rate coz its 60hz now and i do use 85 on the crt. Any advices?

Turn down the brightness?

its not only about the brightness. When i look at the text it seens like taht shit is blurred. Text wrote with thin traces feels like blades piercing my eyes. That sounds a little gay lol. I just never worried about nothing monitor-related before, was happy with my CRT and didnt know. But CRT is past and i have to move on, i cant believe taht 10 years developing lcd tecnology resulted in this piece of shit im standing at, there must be some tweaking missing

i just got the asus 24" monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236049

such a huge difference, i really didn’t know what i was missing out on. running dual monitors is so pimp. i didn’t have an extra dvi-vga adapter so i had to test it on the dvi port. results were not bad. some shots were identical, and the other shots showed lag between 1ms and 16ms. should be even better on the vga. i’ll try to get the pictures up soon, but i’m too lazy right now.

moocus:

Did you get 1ms AND 16ms? or numbers between those 2? if its just 16 ms and 1ms thats the retrace on the monitor ponder was talking about. Im very curious beca use i bought the 23inch and not the 24 inch since I couldnt find any tests online.

Thanks for this sticky, now I just have to test my TV.

looks like ima end up buyin the 24inch evo monitor.they say it has no lag in it.and i talked to a few ppl in #capcom and they said its flawless.so ima just buy that and save me bout 200 bucks lol

If it influences yours or anyone else’s decision, I’ve been told by some friends that the picture quality on these is choice, especially for the price. Dark blacks and nice, vibrant colors.

I don’t know for certain as I haven’t seen them in person but if that helps, awesome!

great now idk which one to choose lol. there both exactly the same but one is only a few centimeters bigger. but those few centimeters will save me bout 32 bucks lol.
