The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

poonage, I registered just so I could thank you for the thread. It has been immensely helpful.

You rock!

Try running it through VGA/HDMI and label it PC.

I got my Sony Bravia KDL-40V4100 delivered yesterday. I haven’t tested the lag yet (I got it hooked to HDFury 2 already tho) but have a totally different issue…

I noticed a stuck pixel. Is this common thing for LCD TV this size? I kind of want to call Best Buy about it but don’t know if they would consider this relevant enough to offer me a replacement.

Is there anything I can do to possibly un-stick the pixel?

I think I answered you over at AVS. What he said: check for “game mode” or ways to turn off image post processing.

Acer H233H bmid lag tests

I did some tests on an Acer H233H bmid I picked up at Costco the other day.

I hooked up an old CRT (something called “Realflat” 770LF) on one of the DVI ports on my computer (using a VGA adapter), and ran the other DVI port to the H233H HDMI port. I hope I’m doing this right. I believe the only way to get more accurate is to use an HDMI splitter rather than relying on the dual ports on your video card (an 8800GTS in this case), which I’ve heard can favor one port over the other. Camera was set to 1600 ISO.

Take these for what they’re worth.

@ 1080: over 29 shots, average lag was 3.167. Only six shots showed lag, 5 of the six was 16ms, one was 15.

@ 720: over 26 shots, average lag was 1.808. Only three shots showed lag, 16 twice and 15 once.

NOTE: in the 720 tests, I had another four shots (not included in the average) that showed the CRT actually lagging the LCD, twice by 15, twice by 16. Not sure what to make of this.

In my photos - the LCD is always on the left, CRT is on the right.

CRT lagging H233H bmid @720:

I also tested my Viewsonic VG2230wm over the DVI port at 1050 since it was there. I didn’t do as many shots as it doesn’t support HDCP and therefore I can’t hook up my PS3 to it. Here are some results if anyone is wondering about it:

@ 1050: over 20 shots, average lag was 3.1. Only four shots showed lag, two 15, and two 16.

what do you mean the image post processing?(there arnt that many options in VGA mode) Also i did connect the xbox through VGA, and i also used component with game mode ON and OFF and the lag results were the exact same.

And when you say turn off all the post processing and then test the input lag, wont that mean i would be playing without any post processing to really play with that amount of lag it shows?

Looks great Gibbous. Thanks for doing that. Short of the HTCP encoding adding in extra lag, I don’t see anything else that could possibly make any meaningful difference to the results you came up with.

Good stuff! I’d rep you if I could.

for anyone still thinking about ordering the monitor evo is using, here’s a nice deal for you.
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10009799

so fucking lame, i just placed my order for this monitor at newegg a few minutes before i saw this. i’m going to see if the order can be cancelled or price matched.

edit: even better http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10010377&ps=homain1

23.6" with $15 coupon and $30 off with ebillme making it only $149.99 with free shipping. fuck me…

Hmm, if game mode is off, and you’ve already looked for other image enhancement options to turn off and you haven’t found anything, I’d say you’ve found the optimal lag for your TV, unfortunately.

Thanks. This is the first time I did a test like that. It’s pretty cool. I want to test the Sony TV I posted GHIII results on earlier next.

Thanks for this. I’m thinking of returning my H233H and upgrading to a 24" Acer panel, but this makes me think. Price is really nice for the Asus!, but the Acer panel has that 40000:1 contrast ratio which really looks good.

well a question for you is why is it that with game mode ON and game mode OFF the results were exactly the same? is there any explanation for that?

Try rubbing the pixel with your finger, I do that to fix stuck pixels on my computer monitor.

The hell?? Are you serious? Wouldn’t that potentially make things worse?

I was thinking about hooking it up to my PC and go to some flash screen sites designed for the same problem in computer monitors. But was wondering if there are other solutions.

That’s a totally legit reason for an exchange. Just be polite but firm with BB and don’t take no for an answer. You’ve spent, I assume, a decent amount of money and deserve a set with no defects. You don’t want to live with that, trust me.

Yeah, I agree, that doesn’t make sense. If I were you, I’d try a different test.

Why did evo pick ASUS VW246H and how much input lag does it have? vga or hdmi cable?

is there any HDTV around 42 to 50 inches with little to no input lag?

They picked it because there was no input lag. None at all. I believe they tested with a DVI cable to the HDMI port.

I can’t answer your second question sorry.

I called up Best Buy, and they agreed to a replacement delivery without much questions. Thanks.

Not sure how they tested it, they did photo tests in the “Need Feedback on Lagless LCD TVs” thread which showed lag, not sure if they came up with an average lag. But more over they did play testing, in which they felt no lag at all.

There are low-lag TVs out there, but I personally don’t know of any specific models. Outside of finding someone who has done a photo test on the specific model your considering, your best move is probably to test out a TV before you buy it, or buy from a store that will allow you to return it so you can run your own tests.

Zanken: thanks

gibbous: thanks, I just read the evo thread. I might do some test of my own:)

I wouldn’t exactly call that lag if what Ponder says is true. The important thing is what you are seeing on the screen you would be seeing at the exact same time as a CRT.
