The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

Hey guys would a 24 inch lcd asus 2ms 1080P be good and lag free?

If you’ve got the equipment, the test at hdtvlag.googlepages.com is more accurate than RB/GH.

If you hook your PS3/360 up through the VGA or DVI ports, then yeah, should be pretty awesome.

so if i hook it up to hdmi it would lag?

Yes it will most likely lag. It’s less about the connection method and more about all the other factors in FAQ section.

oh that suck. so my monitor has the dvi/vga . would the xbox 360 have one also?

Yeah, Microsoft makes an official VGA cable for it. If you only have the DVI, you’ll need an adapter but it’ll work the same.

does it come with the system if i bought xbox or separate?

How is each system connected? What resolution is each outputting?

As far as I know, you have to buy it seperately. They’re like $20 or less on eBay.

oh can you link? i just talk to a gamecrazy guy and it wont lag on hdmi lol. but you guys prefer me to hook it up to dvi/vga?

Edit: something like this? So if its hooked up to DVI/VGA to HMDI or the other way around it should be okay?

So I’ve now tried Guitar Hero: Aerosmith in addition to the Guitar Hero III previously stated. Neither have changed the lag setting via the calibrate function. While I will be the first to admit I don’t feel lag and I get my single frame links, I highly doubt my TV has no lag. I have a Sony Bravia model kdl40s4100. Has anyone had any success with any of the guitar hero tests, because they don’t tell me anything? If not then they need to be removed as valid test options from the original post.

PS3 is 1080 P / 120 HZ / HDMI and XBOX is 1080 P / 60 HZ / HDMI also.

My PS3 controller responds instantly with the HDMI cable, but not my TE stick. Why is that?

Oh, damn, I just bought the same tv a short while ago. I haven’t noticed any lag, but then again, I haven’t been playing SFIV as much as I used to. My old tv was a giant big screen DLP, and I would say the Bravia is five thousand times better.

>:(

Read the first post and don’t spread disinformation. Only typically VGA ports skip lag inducing post processing. A HDMI port is basically just a DVI port with a different connector and the sound signal all wrapped into one with the bonus copy protection standard, so the chance that it processes differently over DVI is very small.

To make sure, plug your ps3 to a CRT and try it with the TE stick… or the easy way (you’ve probably done) is see if your sixaxis is doing the same thing. I’m no expert with electronics, but it sounds like your TV isn’t the problem, my first bet would be on the PCB in your stick.

I’m after a low lag screen, but don’t have a lot to spend. The the 22" Asus that Newegg sells seems like a really nice option, but there are a lot of CRT HDTVs hitting my local Craigslist for close to the same price as an Asus LCD, but with 36" ot 40" screens, and it would be nice to double this as an HDTV for the bedroom. I’m willing to deal with the additional heft of these screens, but does anyone know if in general post processing lag is a problem in CRT HDTVs?

BTW - got 18ms average video lag over 5 tests using the guitar hero III calibration on a Sony KDL-52W4100 (120 version).

EDIT: went back and re-read the AVS post. There is lag since it will likely be upscaling a 720p image to 1080i, but how much lag this would create is what is unknown.

That cord would probably do the trick, but you REALLY want this:

…to ensure lag-free gaming.

Just… I… wow. Well, I could have been more clear but I just meant he might need an adapter in case his monitor only has DVI inputs. Sorry.

And near as I can tell, the only mention of DVI at all from the first post is “…Just hook it up through Component/DVI/HDMI and you’re ready to roll.”

Although yes, DVI and HDMI do send essentially the same signal as far as video is concerned, but I was under the impression he’d be using a monitor, not an HDTV, so I don’t really know what the “post-processing” for a monitor would be, DVI or otherwise. Or if it would be any different as a DVI port on an HDTV.

Actually Zanken, do you know if it affects anything if a VGA cable is used, but connected to a DVI port via an adapter? I did a quick search and I got nothing concrete. It’d still be analog from the system, but I’m not sure about the DVI port.

And real quick, it’s not like I’m not sitting here, fingers pressed together like Mr. Burns, saying “Eeeeexcellent” as I “spread disinformation”. I’ve read the first post, and done a lot of research into this subject on my own, so that was not my intent.

understand, thanks a lot . pretty expensive for like 34$

just bought a Asus 22 VH222H, no noticeable lag. 150 at neweggs i believe.
