The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

Would the color upscaling in HDFury2 add any kind of signal delay? (sorry if this is a stupid question)

Nope. It’s handled different that post-processing. The post-processing is for image resolution. Even CRTs offer a kind of color upscaling so any delay would be extremely unnoticeable.

I play on an Infocus X1 projector at home… I am going to test the lag with the Rockband 2 test that a coworker is going to lend me. I’ll try various resolutions/settings to find the best one.

All this practice, and I might suck at a tournament! Of course, I might be better, too. lol

I have a 46’ Samsung 1080 P / 120 Hz HDMI HDTV. I had some noticeable lag when I was playing SF4 but when I connected the HDMI cable the lag was gone. I just got the TE stick today but I’m getting lag with that… Anybody had the same problem?

Does anyone use a 2009 model Panasonic g10 or v10 plasma?

I have heard that they are very reactive/low lag. I’m thinking that low lag combined with no motion blur and great PQ make these my best candidate.

Also, any opinions/experiences with gaming on a plasma?

46’ ??? Huge!!! LOL…

I have a 40" samsung 1080p 120Hz (ln40a650), have the 360 hooked in via hdmi, pc hooked in via VGA cable and Wii via component cables.

The first thing I played on it was the Wii and the input lag was HORRIBLE… until I turned it to “game mode.” I’ve not noticed an iota of input lag since. When I got a 360, I bought HDMI cables with it, and initially had the tv set to game mode, and I’ve not noticed any input lag whatsoever. I never had it plugged in via component though… If anything, I would think HDMI would have more lag than the analog cables as it is performing that BS digitial authentication step…

I don’t see how using a TE stick would haven’t any effect, unless it’s just faulty somehow.

I am also looking into getting either a Samsung PN50B650/550 or Panasonic TC-P50S10/G10. Has anyone had any experience with either company’s previous plasmas and gaming? I know it wont be lag free but I am hoping for anything within the <1.5 frame range (feasible?). Are either of these worth taking a shot with? If not are there any other suggestions?

Also I was considering checking out Sam’s LNxxB550 lcd. Have heard too many negatives on it, but after checking out various sites I wasn’t sure if it’d be riskier going the LCD route for gaming from a lag perspective (image retention aside). Any advice or suggestions for TVs in that size/price range?

I did the Rock Band 2 test on my theater set up last night. Very pleased.

Projector: Infocus X1
Input: Xbox360 component through Infocus VGA adapter/VGA port.
Resolution: Xbox 360 set to 720p

1st test delay: 17ms
2nd test: 16ms
3rd test: 16ms

Avg: 16.5ms

Thanks to gdlk info and tips from Annihilationscape, I am pretty much set on getting the Sony KDL37L4000 + HDFury 2. The (supposed) performance and reliability of the HDFury 2 pretty much eliminated my concern for lag, and allowed me to just focus on TV quality itself and price.

Final question: Are there any solutions for PS2 > HDTV lag? I’ve pretty much stopped playing all past-gen fighting games, and the only titles I plan to play on the PS2 in the foreseeable future are AH2 and MBAA. But I just figured I would ask.

HDBox Pro? I think that’s the one you want. Shouldn’t be much on eBay, like 30 bucks or so if I recall.

haha thx. I should try messing with the settings on the TV, maybe that’ll help.

My friend’s TE stick doesn’t lag on his XBOX 360 either.

I exchanged mine for another new PS3 TE stick and it’s still the same. My controller responds perfectly, but the joy stick on the TE doesn’t (buttons responds perfectly).

Anybody had the same problem?

Ok, I tried messing with the settings but it’s still the same. (I couldn’t find the “game mode”)

Does anybody know why the XBOX TE stick responds good, but not the PS3 TE stick? Or anybody suffering from the same problem as me?

call me ignorant but i can not tell the difference between my hd monitor and playing on sd tv. i have a acer 23’ inch 1080p monitor hooked to the hdmi. I know people that complain about it but i can’t see the diff

Ok, so we just bought a 46 inch Sharp Aquos 60hz LCD 1080p. I think it’s great! I came from using my 23 inch Samsung 720p with a 8 ms response time to this Sharp Aquos with a 4 ms response time. I definitely feel a difference between both in my SFIV game play. I feel that 4 ms response time difference really does affect your game. The picture looks awesome, and it automatically adjusts brightness and what not. It also has a game mode. I haven’t really used it yet because I just got it and I have to adjust the settings on game mode so it’s brighter because of course when you haven’t set it up to your liking, game mode is dark. The only problem I have with it, is the sound. I haven’t got surround sound yet but I believe if you’re going to get an LCD, you’re going to get surround sound anyway. So that’s the only thing I feel is needed to make this tv perfect. Anyways… here’s the link…

Yeah you probably can’t tell with a 23 inch, and because your sd tv has the antenna, it is receiving an HD signal. You can definetly tell on bigger tvs because you see everything so fkn clear. Especially watching like a basketball game and you see how shiny the court is and the players. I can definitely tell on games. everything is clear. What are the specs on your 23 inch?

Can I get some input on the Sony Bravia KDL-40V4100 (or any of its sister models)? I didn’t really come across comprehensive feedbacks regarding lag when I searched online.

I fully intend to use HDFury 2, but would like to know its performance with HDMI for PS3 and/or Xbox 360 anyway.

nah im happy with my sony w4000

I heard the 4100 series unfortunately isn’t very good in the input lag department, as opposed to the 4000 series.

Tried searching this out to no avail. So if it’s been asked, sorry. Are there any alternative methods for testing that anyone has found?

I can’t find anyone I know with Rock Band 2 and I’m not willing to pay for a game that I have 0 desire to play. I tried out the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and it didn’t tell me any number. I haven’t tried Guitar Hero: Aerosmith or Metallica yet, do they actually work unlike III? (I realize personal inputs are inaccurate but I’m not looking for perfection just want to know)

The response time only has to do with the picture quality itself (ghosting and trailing), not any delay in the commands/inputs and such. So unless a bad picture was what was limiting your potential, then there isn’t going to be that huge of a difference. Unless the input lag on the sharp without game mode isn’t that big in the first place.
