The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

That’s some great info there!

I’m curious what you mean by ‘lag-free,’ though. Because I presume HDFury doesn’t literally eliminate all post-processing lag. Wouldn’t the results vary with each TV?

Yeah, the HDFury does not eliminate lag on its own. It’s just that typically the VGA ports on HDTVs don’t even bother with any post-processing. That’s the whole reason the MayFlash and the HDFury are recommended :bgrin:

So to clarify, when I say “lag-free”, it’s not really so much that the HDFury itself does it; it’s more that the VGA port does it on its own and the HDFury doesn’t actually add any of its own as an analog/digital converter.

For the record, the lag tester for RB2 resulted in the same 2ms of lag with the HDFury as the MayFlash.

Alright. That’s cool. Thanks again!

Now I feel less inclined about finding the ‘right gaming TV,’ and just get one that feels like the ‘right TV’ and tack the HDFury cost on top of it. Any specific recommendation for the cables?

I was wondering. Anyway we could add a list of proven lagless HDTVs to the OP? I don’t know if this has been mentioned previously as I haven’t taken the time to go through 20 pages. I think this would be really helpful and much quicker than looking through a bunch of pages to simply find a list of lagless HDTVs.

After reading your post on the hdfury, I’ve been thinking about getting one myself. So I read up about it some more in their forums and I came across this in their faq posts.

"5) Some notes on when you first connect the HDfury !

When you connect the HDfury for the first time you may see the screen shifted to the left > This is normal.
Simply adjust your display’s settings to shift the image back. This needs to only be done once.
On some European CRT displays you will not be able to shift back far enough because of the US/Euro HD ‘porch’ differences.
If this affects you, switch your source to 60Hz to solve the problem. You can setup a new memory and it won’t disturb any of your original settings.
As the HDfury comes with his own EDID, you will always have the H position to adjust.
For example, you can connect HDfury to your PC VGA screen, and you will see that the first time the picture is shifted to the left.
You can then adjust this setting on your PC display, and it will be perfect. If you connect your computer back to the PC VGA screen, the image will centered as before!
Your screen / display has memory functions to store your settings depending on the source. There is no other settings to adjust."

So it seems like the image shifting to the left is a normal thing and that pc monitors can easilly fix with their auto alignment option. Not sure if hdtv’s have any auto alignment option for their vga ports like pc monitors do, but just thought I share this info I found with you and anybody else who are intrested in purchasing one, like myself.

can any 1 answer this, i have a hd1080p tv, and it has several inputs,

3 HDMI sockets.

2 SCART sockets

PC Input socket…

Component video socket.

Composite.

currently i have tried hdmi sockets 1920x1080,
the vga only goes to like a maximum 1280x1080 but i can get 720p form the vga.

i have not tried the other connections, but what would be best to use for the least lag?

Samsung HLS-50xxW series

This guy tested his TV with GH2 caliration and with “game mode” off, it was around 24-35ms delay. When game mode was on, it was 0-10ms. Very impressive and probably explains why I never thought twice about lag until reading this thread, I’ve always used “game mode” and native resolution on the xbox 360 (1080p). Cheers for anyone searching this thread for this set/series.

@ orka: To be honest, any HDMI to DVI-D cable will do, but I got mine from monoprice.com for like 6 bucks, which is awesome. Also, be aware that not every HDTV on the market will have a VGA port; some now have DVI ports instead, but it’s my understanding that there’s an HDFury model for that as well (either Red or Green editions).

@ onimusha: Thanks for the info! Sadly, as far as I know my TV doesn’t have any sort of H- or V-Shift options, so I might have to live with the odd alignment. Ah well.

I have something to add about the mayflash and the PS3.

I just set mine up and it appears as though it’s a super waste of money if you have a Sony KDL-46S4100 LCD tv. Don’t know why, but it’s doing some woefully inconsistant things with the picutre. When I first hooked it up I went into display settings and tuned it to 1080P with the component cables hooked up. After disconnecting the component cable I went into pc mode on my tv and the screen was “tearing” and flickering and was shifted to the far right. I tried playing a game and it was a no go. I tuned the display setting down to 720p on the PS3 and things got a lot better, so I tried a game and it worked. I shutdown the ps3 and after a bit turned it back on. The screen was way to the left and I haven’t found a way to correct this yet. I would probably not recommend this cable to anyone with a ps3 and my tv.

My mom asked me to check for a good TV, she wants one that is at least 37’’, and I wanted to know recommended models/setups with minimal to no lag, because of course I’ll be using it. Any suggestion are welcome and will be much appreciated!

To make a long story short…

my laptop is away for repair, so i am browsing on the shitty PS3 browser. So going through this thread on the PS3 will take hours

So, I need help with 2 things:

  1. do these “TV-less”, lag-less gamimg monitors come in 32" versions & higher?

  2. where the best to buy these monitors, online & in person?

thanks for & all help. :coffee:

Most of the reliable screens lagwise have been 22’ to 24’ monitors. I believe that LCD monitors cap out at about 30’ and the market for this size is typically graphic artists and what have you, so I’m going to guess that those things would lag.

At that size, you’re better off looking for a TV, I haven’t really done much investigation when it comes to them though.

Would using the component cables from a XBOX 360 instead of HDMI reduce lag?

Based on my understanding, all of the ‘TV’ inputs usually go through the same post processing methods. VGA is typically the only one that doesn’t have all of that crap included.

As always though, it’s worth testing and reporting back if your methods are good. Nothing is set in stone when it comes to the huge variety of displays (and lack of standards).

Like Zanken said, it’s a big “maybe”. Older sets (like those without built-in HDTV tuners) are more likely to have differences between inputs.

I tried looking up for TV models which allows manual horizontal/vertical shift (due to the aforementioned left-align issue regarding HDFury), but was unsuccessful.

Is anybody aware of TV’s that offer such feature?

Orka (and anyone else concerned), I found recently the HDFury2 now corrects the shift issues on TVs and monitors which don’t allow for such adjustments. It runs a straight HDMI-to-VGA, so no HDMI-to-DVI-D is needed; just a standard HDMI cable.

However, they are SPENDY. Cheapest I’ve found is, again, monoprice. Still like 150 bones though. I’m sticking with my original HDFury for the time being, but I plan to eventually upgrade to the HDFury2.

Damn!!

But whatever. If it fixes centering issue, that’s one less factor I need to worry in purchasing a TV. I’m at a point where I’m beginning to really narrow down on my selection, so your info is def good.

Also, would you mind if I ask you where you read about HDFury2?

EDIT: NVM, found manufacturer info… and oh shi-!! It apparently supports sound output as well? That is gdlk.

Yeah, the HDFury2 is an amazing piece of technology, but it’s too big for my wallet right now. I’m kinda stuck living with the left shift until I save enough cash, lol.
