The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

Hey DevilJim.

I was wondering if you got that extensive play time with 3SOE? Did the lag feel good?

It’s Demon Jim lol. Yes I have, there is a little bit but what tv now a days doesnt, but in my opinion it’s not enough to make the game unplayable, in fact I’ve gone from playing this tv to crt and vise versa with no problems as far as timing is off or all the usual complaints. I’ve had a long session on it with some very picky 3S players and while they all said yes there is a tiny bit of lag it didn’t stop them from performing there usual setups and still parried like a champ.

I’m using the xbox connected by HDMI cable. Xbox video setting is at 720.

Thanks for the info. Does that TV have a VGA input?

And man, I can’t believe I typed your name wrong. At first I typed it in as DevilJin, then corrected only halfway right lol. I have TTT2 on the mind.

Yes it does have 1 VGA input. I’ve used it numerous times to hook up my laptop to see streams and what not. Hooked up a friends PC to my tv to play Fighters History Dynamite and Windjammers; both games played perfectly. I really want to buy an xbox to vga cable for my xbox.

Fighting games I have played on the tv are:
XBOX:
Marvel vs. Capcom 3
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo High Definition Remix
Very little Super Street Fighter 4 AE (I don’t like SF4 so this doesn’t get played)

Playstation 3:
Mortal Kombat 9

PC:
Fighters History Dynamite

I have yet to try out Tekken 6 but I really want to. I don’t own a PS3 so I need to borrow a friends setup to try it out.

You need to have both a gaming device that can output at 120hz and a TV/Monitor that can handle the 120hz input, the only combo I’ve found that works like this with gaming so far is a PC with a 120hz computer monitor. You can disable the 3D and enable 120hz for both gaming and your windows desktop, it’s amazing how much better even moving the mouse pointer around with REAL 120hz looks… and gaming looks way better. To my knowledge you can’t do this with PS3/Xbox 360 and a TV yet…

Does anyone know how the Viewsonic VX2260WM fairs input lag wise? I’ve been considering buying one of the many recommended “lag free” monitors but am curious to know what my current one is like. I’m currently not in a situation where i can test it myself unfortunately.

Average of 11 ms (one frame is 16ms), minimum of 0 ms and maximum of 20 ms. I’d say it’s probably playable; just not as good as the ones <1/2 a frame.
For comparison the average for an EVO monitor is 8.3ms.

Hey Demon. Was looking up some info (or at least trying too) I’m currently shopping for a new TV for all general use. I think at least to show it raw would be to record a video and upload it to youtube showing you pushing a button versus the action on the screen. Aside for gaming, how does it look as far as regular pictures for movies and shows?

Also for those who are looking for a LD450 by LG. They’re REALLY hard to find right now minus the internet. However AVS forums are saying that the LK450’s are about the same. If you want the good IPS panels though you need to find a Y in the serial number. That can usually be located below the barcode and look like "xxLK450-UA.blahblahblah or something along those lines. I believe there’s another way that requires a magnifying glass but I can’t find that post that specifically says what to do…

Thanks for all the info Demon Jim.

I’ve never tried the ld450, but I just bought a 42lk450. Based on my tests it has 2 frames of lag @ 720p (33f-34f) and 3 frames of lag @ 1080p (50f). I bought it from amazon and recieved the model with a “D” instead of the “Y”. So I went to walmart and picked up the “Y” lk450 and the lag were exactly the same for both panels. I was gonna do a “switcharoo” and return the “D” panel to walmart, but since they were basically the same I dont know which one I should stay with. The “Y” panel is supposed to have the worse picture.

I tested using clone mode off a pc with hdmi/vga, and also using a component-to-vga transcoder w/ pass through component from a ps3. The results were the same
The crt I used was a fw900. The input lag I stated… I guess thats the average… Meaning it was either 33-34 everytime or 50 everytime respectively so their was nothing to average. I didnt bother testing the vga on the tv

On the “D” panel though, sometimes an extra frame of lag would creep in, though it seemed really rare. Since it was already 3 frames, which I dont think is very good anyways, Im debating on whether I should keep the “D” panel since the picture would be better.

When I first saw my tv I was actually at Best Buy. Since it was on next to all the other tvs of that size it was very easy to compare brightness, color, and sound right there on the spot. I recommend checking your local best buy if they have it so you see the picture quality yourself. But to answer your question as far as a regular tv goes. I love it, it’s extremely bright, awesome viewing angles, my blu rays play very crystal clear, no color bleeding, and awesome colors.

I’ve also used it as a computer monitor and that when it was connected that was one of the most clearer screens I have ever seen.

Really? I wonder whats’ going on then. I heard the Y panel (IPS whatever) should be having lowish input lag compared to the D panel as well as viewing angles. What input were you using? Also yeah I heard the lk450’s (2011) had a “bit” more lag compared to the Ld450 (2010 model) I’ve been reading up a bit more that panasonic and sharps are the good TV’s for low input lag, at least for LCD’s.

Do you got any other experiences as far as lag goes for gaming? I’m currently on a big CRT tv from '05 and I’m loving my pretty much no lag and decent picture (lol 480p) The price for the panasonic also isn’t too bad…100 less compared to a LG or Samsung.

For the lag tests I used a pc and a ps3. On the pc I used duplicate mode on a 5570 video card, with the vga going to the fw900 and hdmi going to the hdtv. With the ps3 I used a component to vga transcoder, with the vga going to the fw900 and the component pass through going to the hdtv. The transcoder test is coming straight from the ps3 so it should be pretty accurate. The results were the same with the pc though.

With the transcoder I tested with 1080i/720p since thats the highest it could accept. It didnt seem to make a difference. I tested 1080i with the hdmi and there was no difference between 1080i and 1080p. Also I tested 408p with both in duplicate mode and with the transcoder, and the lag was the same as the 720p…33-34 frames.
Kinda weird results seeing as this is a 1080p tv, so one would think it would lag more if your using a resolution other than 1080p but it lagged less at 720p.

I also heard the same thing about the lk450 having slightly more lag than the ld450. If true then the ld450 would have pretty damn good input lag. They had one on display @ the walmart I went to, they mistakenly had it labeled as a lk450. I didnt check if it was the ips panel though I’ll probably check to see how much they would let it go for.

Also, just a little clarification. I was doing some reading and it seems like maybe I should keep the “Y” panel. Its alot rarer than the other panel and the picture is supposed to be better…I had it backwards. Colors are supposed to be better its just the blacks/contrast that suffer. Just saying so I didnt steer someone the wrong way after reading my post.

As far as more lag tests or anything I seriously don’t have anything for you. I really want to tell you it’s a perfect tv but this is strictly off of my feel and to each there own. Without proper tests I can’t tell you you should get. But it hasn’t failed me.

This is actually a general question but would best buy allow you to take your console and hook it up to one of their smaller 32 in setups to test it out?

-DJ-

I’ve been wanting to know that as well. I can either do that or see if they don’t mind hooking up one of their demo units. However I’d be minus a VGA cable since I’m running on the basic inputs that came in box and enjoying my no lag 480p resolution lol

any word yet bluenine?

No, unfortunately! I haven’t forgotten, but I haven’t managed to do it yet.

Anyone have experience with the Asus VE248h? Thinking about getting one from Newegg later this week.

Hurry up! Ill even throw in a year of premium! If you do it soon!

DO IT DO IT!!
